Found from Uruguayan waters to southern Chile and around Malvinas/Falkland Islands. Around the Malvinas/Falkland Islands the species is a small component in the multispecies skate fishery. There was a gradual decrease in the size of specimens taken in this fishery between 1993 and 1997 although the data were often sparse. Following fishery declines in the early 1990s, the southern area of the Islands was closed to the commercial ray fleet and fishing now only occurs north of 52°S. An assessment of the northern ray population has indicated that the CPUE of A. doellojuradoi has increased from 1992 to 2001. There have been no assessments yet of the population in the southern area of the Islands since the fishery closure and the species may still be subject to bycatch pressure by deepwater teleost trawlers in this area. Documented population trends do not exist for the rest of the species' distribution. It was a regular bycatch of deeper water benthic trawl fisheries targeting Merluccius hubbsi and Dissostichus eleginoides off Argentina however there are no species-specific bycatch estimates available for these fisheries. This species is assessed as Least Concern because it is common and there is no evidence of generalized decline; moreover, there are reports of increases in CPUE over some of the species' range, although the magnitude of these increases is difficult to assess. Compilers: García, V., & Cuevas, J.M. 7 Taxonomic information ANIMALIA - CHORDATA - CHONDRICHTHYES - RAJIFORMES - RAJIDAE - Amblyraja doellojuradoi (Pozzi, 1935) Common Names: Southern Thorny Skate (English), Raya (Spanish; Castilian), Raya Erizo (Spanish; Castilian) Geographic Range The Southern Thorny Skate Amblyraja doellojuradoi is an endemic species of the Patagonian Sea found from southern Uruguayan waters to southern Chile and around Malvinas/Falkland Islands (Ebert, 2016, Cousseau et al., 2007, Perier et al., 2011). 8 Population There are no species-specific bycatch estimates and therefore no population trend available for this species in the Patagonian Sea. In Falkland/Malvinas Islands observer data for the species showed no significant trends in abundance between 1993 and 1997 (Agnew et al. 2000). Mean disc width gradually decreased from 1993 to 1997 although the data were often sparse (Agnew et al. 2000). The Wakeford et al. (2004) assessment of the northern ray population, based on observer data, indicated that the CPUE of A. doellojuradoi increased from 1992 to 2001. Amblyraja doellojuradoi comprised 2.4% of the catch from the northern area of the fishery between 1993 and 2002 (Wakeford et al. 2004) while in 2016 it comprised 3.9% of the total capture weight of 21 fishing vessels (Winter et al., 2015). Population trend: unknown. Habitats and Ecology Amblyraja doellojuradoi is a medium-sized benthic species distributed in deep temperate waters of the continental shelf and slope. It was reported at depths from 51 to 642 m in bottom temperatures ranging from 2.5°C to 6.8°C (Menni and Stehmann 2000), and off Punta Arenas, Chile at 185 m depth and between 105 m and 1640 m around Malvinas/Falklands Islands (Joost Pompert pers. comm. 2017). This species has been recorded from 57 m to 323 m depth over the continental shelf (Laura Paesch and Gustavo Chiaramonte pers comm. 2017). Males mature at 44.8 cm and females at 41.1 cm (Delpiani, 2016). No sexual dimorphism was observed in the total length at maturity at which 50% of individuals were sexually mature. Reproduction might occur throughout the year with peaks in autumn (Delpiani, 2016). Diet is based mainly on crabs and to a lesser extent on polychaetes, teleosts, isopods, and other invertebrates. Ontogenetic diet changes include increased consumption of crabs as animals grow and decreased feeding on polychaetes and other invertebrates (Delpiani et al., 2013). Threats Amblyraja doellojuradoi is a by-cath species of bottom trawl fisheries of Uruguay targeting argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi (Paesch and Lorenzo, 2017). It is also a bycatch species in bottom trawl fisheries of Argentina targeting vertebrates and invertebrates such as the patagonic scallop fishery (Zygochlamys patagonica) (Schejter et al. 2012). It has been captured during fishery-independent investigations on hake and other species in the past (García de la Rosa et al. 1999). Off Argentina, the great depth range of the species offers it some refuge beyond the depth 9 of current fishing pressure, however, especially as fisheries expand into greater depths, there is a need for close monitoring and the collection of species-specific catch and bycatch data where none currently exists. Beta diversity, which quantifes species turnover between these two scales, is emerging as a key driver of ecosystem function that can inform spatial conservation. Yet measuring biodiversity remains a major challenge, especially in aquatic ecosystems. Decoding environmental DNA (eDNA) left behind by organisms ofers the possibility of detecting species sans direct observation, a Rosetta Stone for biodiversity. While eDNA has proven useful to illuminate diversity in aquatic ecosystems, its utility for measuring beta diversity over spatial scales small enough to be relevant to conservation purposes is poorly known. Here we tested how eDNA performs relative to underwater visual census (UVC) to evaluate beta diversity of marine communities. We paired UVC with 12S eDNA metabarcoding and used a spatially structured hierarchical sampling design to assess key spatial metrics of fsh communities on temperate rocky reefs in southern California. eDNA provided a more‑detailed picture of the main sources of spatial variation in both taxonomic richness and community turnover, which primarily arose due to strong species fltering within and among rocky reefs. As expected, eDNA detected more taxa at the regional scale (69 vs. 38) which accumulated quickly with space and plateaued at only ~ 11 samples. Conversely, the discovery rate of new taxa was slower with no sign of saturation for UVC.

Chondrichthyans constitute a successful group with a long and intricate evolutionary history that makes them highly vulnerable. The smallnose fanskate, Sympterygia bonapartii (MÜLLER & HENLE, 1841) is one of the most disembarked items in commercial harbors in Argentina. In this work, the microscopic architecture of mature male gonads and the dynamics of cysts development are analyzed as an interesting tool for understanding the reproductive biology of this specie. Some biological data related to reproduction are given as well. Two seasons were sampled (fall and spring) and length classes’ frequency distribution and maturity stages frequency distribution are given. LT 50 for males was estimated as 58.01 cm of total length. Testes are symmetric, peer, lobated, with several germinal zones. Inside the gonads, there are many spermatocysts, which contain reproductive cells at the same developmental stage. On the basis of their cytological and microanatomical features, seven maturative degrees of the spermatogenic series were differentiated. Few Leydig cells were recognized at the interstitial tissue between cysts. The microscopic quantitative analysis performed in this work provides a promising tool that may contribute to a better knowledge of the reproductive cycles of this economically and ecologically important species. 1 KEY WORDS: Histology, testis, smallnose fanskate, spermatogenesis. Barreto Abstract Commercial fisheries struggle to apply regulatory and legal mechanisms that depend on reliable species-specific data, and the shark industry faces an even greater obstacle to transparency with sellers changing product names to overcome consumer resistance. Fraudulent representation or mislabeling of fish, including sharks and rays, has been recorded in some countries. In Brazil, for instance, sharks are sold as “cação” – a popular name attributed for any shark or ray species; how- ever, according to consumer’s knowledge of a large city of southern Brazil, more than 70% of them are often unaware that “cação” refers to sharks. Today, the Brazilian market has a high interest in encouraging people to eat “cação” meat, mainly because of their attractive prices. This raise a number of questions, mainly in respect to the knowledge of people/consumers, as what are they eating, and why the Brazilian meat market has grown so much in the last years. 10.1 Introduction The Chondrichthyes, or cartilaginous fish (i.e sharks, rays, skates and chimaeras), are among the oldest taxa of vertebrates and have survived on planet earth for over 400 million years, including 4 mass extinction events (Camhi et al. 1998; Musick 1999).     SKATES – Familia Rajidae About twenty species of the Family Rajidae (Class Chondrichthyes) are distributed in the Treaty area. Commonly known as skates, these species constitute, together with the narrownose smoothhoundand the angular angel shark, the most exploited chondrichthyans of the region. Considering their geographical distribution and the fisheries to which they are subject, two groups can be established: coastal skates and deepwater skates. The coastal skates inhabit the coastal strip of the Treaty area, between 34° and 39° S and from the coast to 50 m depth. It is composed of at least 9 species (Sympterygia bonapartii, S. acuta, Atlantoraja castelnaui, A. cyclophora, Psammobatis bergi, P. extenta, P. rutrum, Rioraja agassizi and Zearaja flavirostris (= Z. chilensis, = Dipturus chilensis). It should be mentioned that the species S. bonapartii and Z. flavirostris have a wide geographic distribution in the maritime areas south of 34° S, including both the coastal region and the deeper one. However, the highest abundances of S. bonapartii occur at depths less than 50 m, while Z. flavirostris, the most important of all the skate from the commercial point of view, is concentrated especially at depths greater than 50 m. A third species, Psammobatis lentiginosa, inhabit in an intermediate region between the two previous or ecotone, close to the 50 m isobath, between 34° and 42° S. In the Treaty area the coastal skates are captured by the fleet Argentine coast that operates on the multispecific fishery called "variado costero" and by the Uruguayan fleet Category B. The others species of the Family Rajidae, which inhabit in the average and external continental shelf of the ZCP, are included in the group deepwater skates.
