Chavez3, Christie E. Yorke1 & Robert J. Miller1 Biodiversity is changing at an accelerating rate at both local and regional scales. Beta diversity, which quantifes species turnover between these two scales, is emerging as a key driver of ecosystem function that can inform spatial conservation. Yet measuring biodiversity remains a major challenge, especially in aquatic ecosystems. Decoding environmental DNA (eDNA) left behind by organisms ofers the possibility of detecting species sans direct observation, a Rosetta Stone for biodiversity. While eDNA has proven useful to illuminate diversity in aquatic ecosystems, its utility for measuring beta diversity over spatial scales small enough to be relevant to conservation purposes is poorly known. Here we tested how eDNA performs relative to underwater visual census (UVC) to evaluate beta diversity of marine communities. We paired UVC with 12S eDNA metabarcoding and used a spatially structured hierarchical sampling design to assess key spatial metrics of fsh communities on temperate rocky reefs in southern California. eDNA provided a more‑detailed picture of the main sources of spatial variation in both taxonomic richness and community turnover, which primarily arose due to strong species fltering within and among rocky reefs. As expected, eDNA detected more taxa at the regional scale (69 vs. 38) which accumulated quickly with space and plateaued at only ~ 11 samples. Conversely, the discovery rate of new taxa was slower with no sign of saturation for UVC. -

Chondrichthyans constitute a successful group with a long and intricate evolutionary history that makes them highly vulnerable. The smallnose fanskate, Sympterygia bonapartii (MÜLLER & HENLE, 1841) is one of the most disembarked items in commercial harbors in Argentina. In this work, the microscopic architecture of mature male gonads and the dynamics of cysts development are analyzed as an interesting tool for understanding the reproductive biology of this specie. Some biological data related to reproduction are given as well. Two seasons were sampled (fall and spring) and length classes’ frequency distribution and maturity stages frequency distribution are given. LT 50 for males was estimated as 58.01 cm of total length. Testes are symmetric, peer, lobated, with several germinal zones. Inside the gonads, there are many spermatocysts, which contain reproductive cells at the same developmental stage. On the basis of their cytological and microanatomical features, seven maturative degrees of the spermatogenic series were differentiated. Few Leydig cells were recognized at the interstitial tissue between cysts. The microscopic quantitative analysis performed in this work provides a promising tool that may contribute to a better knowledge of the reproductive cycles of this economically and ecologically important species. 1 KEY WORDS: Histology, testis, smallnose fanskate, spermatogenesis. Network analysis represents an ideal tool to model interactions in ecosystems and centrality indices have been extensively applied to quantify the structural and functional importance of species in food webs. However, many network studies fail in deciphering the ecological mechanisms that lead some species to occupy the most central positions in food webs. To address this question, we built a high-resolution food web of the Gulf of California and quantified species position using 15 centrality indices and the trophic level. We then modelled the values of each index as a function of traits and other attributes (e.g., habitat). -

Freshly laid egg capsules are occurring exclusively from Brazil to Argentina; the pale yellow-brownish in color and turn to dark brown over Smallnose fanskate, Sympterygia bonapartii (Mu¨ller and time in sea water. Barreto Abstract Commercial fisheries struggle to apply regulatory and legal mechanisms that depend on reliable species-specific data, and the shark industry faces an even greater obstacle to transparency with sellers changing product names to overcome consumer resistance. Fraudulent representation or mislabeling of fish, including sharks and rays, has been recorded in some countries. In Brazil, for instance, sharks are sold as “cação” – a popular name attributed for any shark or ray species; how- ever, according to consumer’s knowledge of a large city of southern Brazil, more than 70% of them are often unaware that “cação” refers to sharks. Today, the Brazilian market has a high interest in encouraging people to eat “cação” meat, mainly because of their attractive prices. This raise a number of questions, mainly in respect to the knowledge of people/consumers, as what are they eating, and why the Brazilian meat market has grown so much in the last years. 10.1 Introduction The Chondrichthyes, or cartilaginous fish (i.e sharks, rays, skates and chimaeras), are among the oldest taxa of vertebrates and have survived on planet earth for over 400 million years, including 4 mass extinction events (Camhi et al. 1998; Musick 1999). It can be considered an evolutionary successful group because it has diverse reproductive strategies (including parthenogenesis), ranging from planktivorous to top predators, occupying practically all aquatic niches (Priede et al. 2006; Snelson H. SKATES – Familia Rajidae About twenty species of the Family Rajidae (Class Chondrichthyes) are distributed in the Treaty area. Commonly known as skates, these species constitute, together with the narrownose smoothhoundand the angular angel shark, the most exploited chondrichthyans of the region. Considering their geographical distribution and the fisheries to which they are subject, two groups can be established: coastal skates and deepwater skates. The coastal skates inhabit the coastal strip of the Treaty area, between 34° and 39° S and from the coast to 50 m depth. It is composed of at least 9 species (Sympterygia bonapartii, S. acuta, Atlantoraja castelnaui, A. cyclophora, Psammobatis bergi, P. extenta, P. rutrum, Rioraja agassizi and Zearaja flavirostris (= Z. chilensis, = Dipturus chilensis). It should be mentioned that the species S. bonapartii and Z. flavirostris have a wide geographic distribution in the maritime areas south of 34° S, including both the coastal region and the deeper one. However, the highest abundances of S. bonapartii occur at depths less than 50 m, while Z. flavirostris, the most important of all the skate from the commercial point of view, is concentrated especially at depths greater than 50 m. A third species, Psammobatis lentiginosa, inhabit in an intermediate region between the two previous or ecotone, close to the 50 m isobath, between 34° and 42° S. In the Treaty area the coastal skates are captured by the fleet Argentine coast that operates on the multispecific fishery called "variado costero" and by the Uruguayan fleet Category B. The others species of the Family Rajidae, which inhabit in the average and external continental shelf of the ZCP, are included in the group deepwater skates.
