We saw all but a few of the endemic birds we were seeking (and the ones missed are mostly rarely seen), and had good weather throughout, with little rain hampering proceedings for any significant length of time. Among the avian highlights were five pitta species seen, with the Blue-banded, Blue-headed, and Black-and-crimson Pittas in particular putting on fantastic shows for all birders present. The Blue-banded was so spectacular it was an obvious shoe-in for one of the top trip birds of the tour from the moment we walked away. Amazingly, despite absolutely stunning views of a male Blue-headed Pitta showing his shimmering cerulean blue cap and deep purple underside to spectacular effect, he never even got a mention in the final highlights of the tour, which completely baffled me; he simply could not have been seen better, and birds simply cannot look any better! However, to mention only the endemics is to miss the mark, as some of the, other, less local birds create as much of a stir, and can bring with them as much fanfare. -

The circular mitochondrial genome is 17,785 bp in length and includes 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and two ribosomal RNA genes. BORNEO: Bristleheads, Broadbills, Barbets, Bulbuls, Bee-eaters, Babblers, and a whole lot more A Tropical Birding Set Departure July 1-16, 2018 Guide: Ken Behrens All photos by Ken Behrens TOUR SUMMARY Borneo lies in one of the biologically richest areas on Earth – the Asian equivalent of Costa Rica or Ecuador. It holds many widespread Asian birds, plus a diverse set of birds that are restricted to the Sunda region (southern Thailand, peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo), and dozens of its own endemic birds and mammals. For family listing birders, the Bornean Bristlehead, which makes up its own family, and is endemic to the island, is the top target. For most other visitors, Orangutan, the only great ape found in Asia, is the creature that they most want to see. But those two species just hint at the wonders held by this mysterious island, which is rich in bulbuls, babblers, treeshrews, squirrels, kingfishers, hornbills, pittas, and much more. Although there has been rampant environmental destruction on Borneo, mainly due to the creation of oil palm plantations, there are still extensive forested areas left, and the Malaysian state of Sabah, at the northern end of the island, seems to be trying hard to preserve its biological heritage. Ecotourism is a big part of this conservation effort, and Sabah has developed an excellent tourist infrastructure, with comfortable lodges, efficient transport companies, many protected areas, and decent roads and airports. So with good infrastructure, and remarkable biological diversity, including many marquee species like Orangutan, several pittas and a whole Borneo: Bristleheads and Broadbills July 1-16, 2018 range of hornbills, Sabah stands out as one of the most attractive destinations on Earth for a travelling birder or naturalist. -

David Bishop Tour Summary Rockjumper’s inaugural tour of the islands of the Southwest Pacific kicked off in style with dinner at the Stamford Airport Hotel in Sydney, Australia. The following morning we were soon winging our way north and eastwards to the ancient Gondwanaland of New Caledonia. Upon arrival we then drove south along a road more reminiscent of Europe, passing through lush farmlands seemingly devoid of indigenous birds. Happily this was soon rectified; after settling into our Noumea hotel and a delicious luncheon, we set off to explore a small nature reserve established around an important patch of scrub and mangroves. Here we quickly cottoned on to our first endemic, the rather underwhelming Grey-eared Honeyeater, together with Nankeen Night Herons, a migrant Sacred Kingfisher, White-bellied Woodswallow, Fantailed Gerygone and the resident form of Rufous Whistler. As we were to discover throughout this tour, in areas of less than pristine habitat we encountered several Grey-eared Honeyeater by David Hoddinott introduced species including Common Waxbill. And so began a series of early starts which were to typify this tour, though today everyone was up with added alacrity as we were heading to the globally important Rivierre Bleu Reserve and the haunt of the incomparable Kagu. We drove 1.3 hours to the reserve, passing through a stark landscape before arriving at the appointed time to meet my friend Jean-Marc, the reserve’s ornithologist and senior ranger. -

(2011) 1: 38-45 COMPARATIVE TEMPORAL DISCOLOURATION OF DRY MUSEUM SPECIMENS OF MOUNTAIN BLACKEYE (Chlorocharis emiliae) MOHAMAD FIZL SIDQ RAMJI* & MUSTAFA ABDUL RAHMAN Department of Zoology, Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak 94300, Kota Samarahan, Sarawak ABSTRACT Plumage colour studies using museum skins is one of the ways to understand species evolution and plumage polymorphism. The invaluable scientific information on a single historic specimen should be well-presented in the most regarded form of quality skin. However, aging plumage feathers are hypothetically susceptible to colour fading therefore doubting the relevant of using old specimens for plumage colour assessment. We examined the colour changes in 36 museum specimens by conducting series of Munsell colour scoring by comparing recent and old skins of mountain blackye (Chlorocharis emiliae), at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Sarawak Museum (SM). The year-gap of both sets of specimens ranged from 52 to 75 years. Eight plumage characters included in this study were crown, supercilium, auricular, mantle, rump, breast, belly and vent. The results revealed that the head (crown and auricular) and underparts (breast and vent) tend to fade extensively overtime compared to the upperparts. Therefore the results of this study support the earlier findings that aging plumage feathers are susceptible to colour fading. MALAYSIA: The ASIA Introtour A Tropical Birding Set Departure June 23-30, 2018 Guide: Ken Behrens All photos by Ken Behrens TOUR SUMMARY Any birder who has browsed through a southeast Asian bird book realizes that a huge set of lowland forest birds is found in the southern part of the peninsula, from southern Myanmar and Thailand south. Peninsular Malaysia is at the heart of this Sundaland biome, sharing a rich lowland avifauna with Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. Peninsular Malaysia also has tall mountains with a very different mix of birds – pseudo-Himalayan species, local endemics, and species shared with the mountains of the Greater Sunda islands. This tour is built around these two biomes. It is short and affordable, and provides a great introduction both to Asian birding in general, and more specifically to birding in the southern part of southeast Asia. One of the great things about this trip is its simplicity; three nights are spent at two locations: Fraser’s Hill (montane forest) and Taman Negara (lowland forest). The mangrove site of Kuala Selangor is also visited on the way to Fraser’s Hill, adding a nice suite of mangrove and scrubby forest species to the trip tally. Malaysia has excellent infrastructure, including great roads and luxurious lodging. The people are friendly and hospitable, and the excellent food is enriched by a mix of Chinese, Indian, and Malay influences. For those who want a longer sojourn in Sundaland, this short tour can be combined with the longer Tropical Birding Borneo tour that immediately follows it. Borneo lies within the everwet tropiCS and supports the largest expanse of tropical.~rainforest -in ~the - ~ Indomalayan Realm. It is a main centre of distribution for many genera of the Malesian flora and the Indomalayan fauna. Forest types include mangrove forests, large areas of peat swamp and freshwater non-peaty swamp, the most extensive heath or kerangasforests in the realm, lowland dipterocarp forest, forests on limestone, and variolls montane formations. Geologically and climatically, Borneo has remained stable for the last few thousand years and evolved high species diversity. Table 1 compares species richness and endemism for plants, mammals, birds and reptiles on the Indonesian islands. Borneo and Irian Jaya (New Guinea) score most highly for spedes richness and are the obvious fir.st can:iidates for conservation efforts to protect biological divE:rsi ty in Indonesia. Deforestation and development are proceeding more rapidly in Kalimantan. This was my fourth trip to Sabah and, as always, it was a pleasure to bird the third largest island of the world. As in many rainforests, the birding can be tricky, and sometimes it means standing and looking at bushes within distance of a faint call from the desired jewel. Sometimes it took quite some patience to find the birds, but we did very well and were lucky with many good views of the more difficult birds of the island. Our group flew in to Kota Kinabalu, where our journey began. During the first part of the tour we focused on the endemic-rich Kinabalu mountain, which we birded from the conveniently located Hill Lodge right at the park entrance. After birding the cool mountains, we headed with pleasure for the tropical Sabah lowlands, with Sepilok as our first stop followed by the Kinabatangan River and Danum Valley Rainforest. The Kinabatangan River is a peat swamp forest holding some very special fauna and flora. Tall dipterocarps dominate the forests of Sepilok and Danum; we did very well in finding the best birds on offer in all places visited. We had 30-minute walkaway views of the superb Whitehead’s Broadbill (photo M.Valkenburg) In the Kinabalu park we walked some trails, but mostly we birded and walked easily along the main road through this gorgeous forest filled with epiphytes and giant tree-ferns.
