1 Theodicy: An Overview Introduction All of us struggle at one time or another in life with why evil happens to someone, either ourselves, our family, our friends, our nation, or perhaps some particularly disturbing instance in the news—a child raped, a school shooting, genocide in another country, a terrorist bombing. The following material is meant to give an overview of the discussion of this issue as it takes place in several circles, especially that of the Christian church. I. The Problem of Evil Defined Three terms, "the problem of evil," "theodicy," and "defense" are important to our discussion. The first two are often used as synonyms, but strictly speaking the problem of evil is the larger issue of which theodicy is a subset because one can have a secular problem of evil. Evil is understood as a problem when we seek to explain why it exists (Unde malum?) and what its relationship is to the world as a whole. Indeed, something might be considered evil when it calls into question our basic trust in the order and structure of our world. Peter Berger in particular has argued that explanations of evil are necessary for social structures to stay themselves against chaotic forces. It follows, then, that such an explanation has an impact on the whole person. As David Blumenthal observes, a good theodicy is one that has three characteristics: 1. "[I]t should leave one with one’s sense of reality intact." (It tells the truth about reality.) 2. "[I]t should leave one empowered within the intellectual-moral system in which one lives." (Namely, it should not deny God’s basic power or goodness.) 3. -

BEFORE THE ORIGINAL POSITION The Neo-Orthodox Theology of the Young John Rawls Eric Gregory ABSTRACT This paper examines a remarkable document that has escaped critical at- tention within the vast literature on John Rawls, religion, and liberalism: Rawls’s undergraduate thesis, “A Brief Inquiry into the Meaning of Sin and Faith: An Interpretation Based on the Concept of Community” (1942). The thesis shows the extent to which a once regnant version of Protestant the- ology has retreated into seminaries and divinity schools where it now also meets resistance. Ironically, the young Rawls rejected social contract liber- alism for reasons that anticipate many of the claims later made against him by secular and religious critics. The thesis and Rawls’s late unpublished remarks on religion and World War II offer a new dimension to his intellec- tual biography. They show the significance of his humanist response to the moral impossibility of political theology. Moreover, they also reveal a kind of Rawlsian piety marginalized by contemporary debates over religion and liberalism. These two events symbolically express transformations in American intellectual and political culture that remain significant today. In the academy, religious defenders of a liberal consensus had been chal- lenged by ascendant secular liberalisms and emergent religious voices critical of liberalism of any kind. Parallel developments in the political culture had begun to see the fracturing of coalitions that transcended di- verse religious and secular commitments in order to support democratic institutions and practices. -

The Quest for an American Lutheran Theology: Augustana and Lutheran Quarterly by Maria E. Erling he Augustana Synod’s 1948 centennial commemorated the Tfounding of its fi rst congregation.1 The seminary’s theological journal, The Augustana Quarterly, marked the anniversary by introducing readers to their Swedish heritage. Historical essays by Hilding Pleijel and others on nineteenth-century church life in Sweden explained how Swedish rural piety shaped personal and social life. Gustaf Aulen and Anders Nygren brought Swedish theology, with its fresh approach to the post-war crisis, to Augustana’s fully Americanized readership. The Augustana Quarterly renewed the relationship between Sweden and America at a crucial time. Lutheran leaders, especially in Scandinavia, were emerging from the crisis of the war with a profound sense that the future of Lutheranism itself depended on a fresh articulation of its Reformation theological heritage. They wanted and needed an American audience, while Lutherans in the United States also sought to participate in this work of theological renewal. American Lutheran relief eff orts had convinced Europeans of the American reputation for activism, but Germans and Scandinavians were suspicious of activism in theology, even though quietism was now demonstrably far worse. A new articulation of Lutheran theology was a part of the reconstruction eff ort needed to restore the spiritual legacy of the churches in the wake of the seeming capitulation of German Lutheranism to the totalitarian Nazi state. The Augustana Quarterly and The Lutheran Church Quarterly (a jointly produced journal from Gettysburg and Philadelphia) both worked to reorient Lutheran theology to address the needs of the hour. -
