Trimble: Babe Ruth: The Media Construction of a 1920's Sport Personality Babe Ruth: The Media Construction ofa 1920's Sport Personality By PATRICK TRIMBLE NE COULD SPECULATE that had Babe Ruth not been born, he would have Obeen invented by the bubbling social cauldron of the 1920's. It was the Jazz Age, the decade of the flapper and of prohibition. The moral fiber of America was split along the lines of the rigid puritan work ethic and a hedo nism that honored individual achievement and upward social mobility. In these hectic years, no personality represented the idea of celebrity better than George Herman "Babe" Ruth. l Ruth's rise from the streets of Baltimore to the ballparks of New York was an Horatio Alger story, a blueprint for American success. He was, in the words of sport historian David Voigt, the most photographed man in America during the 1920's.2 His skill on the ballfield and his indulgences off the field were legendary. When he was not playing ball, he performed in vaudeville shows. Newspaper columns, "How to Play Baseball" guides and even a children's book were ghost-written in his name. -

More information of knowledge, faster speed, more technology across the board Jack Welch, former General Electric CEO Most of the attention and adulation regarding sports flows toward the most visible participants – players and coaches. Few “executives” have extensive histories written about their exploits or philosophies. An exception to this rule is Branch Rickey, who helped to build the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1920s and 1930s and later the Brooklyn Dodgers during the 1940s into consistent winners as their general manager. Rickey has been called part entrepreneur, part scout, part philosopher, part preacher, and part snake-oil salesman for his wide-ranging activities and thoughts regarding baseball and business. These have been well-documented in anecdotes, biographies, and personal notes. In both his basic outlook on players as well as within the organizational frameworks that 30 30 he established for the Cardinals and Dodgers, Rickey stressed the importance of fundamentals. By fundamentals or synonymous terms, he was talking about the skills or characteristics from which the basic elements of performance could be built. Rather than just looking at a young player‟s hitting statistics, Rickey looked at the components of the young players swing to see if he thought the mechanics present would lead to future success with development or whether the player, even with impressive statistics might use unsound elements in their swing. -

America's Presstime: How Images Of Baseball Reporters Have Shaped the Perception of Our National Sport and The Profession Of Journalism By Chad Sabadie “You call ourselves writers, and all we do is watch ballgames, argue about everything and just get drunk a lot. You call that writing?” asks sportswriter Al Stump of his colleagues in the movie Cobb. 1 What is a baseball sportswriter? Is it someone who merely reports on daily games and activities? Or is it someone who plays a larger role in the world of the players and fans with whom he associates? What is the image that comes to mind when one mentions a baseball reporter? The image of a baseball reporter is varied at best. Some see him or her as just another hard worker out to do his or her job. Others see an intrusive antagonist who will do anything to break a story. Over the years, the public has seen many images of baseball writers, and not while attending games at the ballpark. They’re seen in America’s other favorite pastime, the movies. It’s on the big screen that the different personalities and traits are truly exposed. Some images are constant from film to film, while others may just flash up once in a while. In baseball movies specifically, the public comes across a wide spectrum of personas that reveal what it takes to make a baseball writer. Many of the images are projections of real life transformed to film. There are writers who believe that their word is final, while others are friends who aid ballplayers throughout their careers. -

religions Article Babe Ruth: Religious Icon Rebecca Alpert Department of Religion, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA 19122, USA; [email protected] Received: 24 April 2019; Accepted: 17 May 2019; Published: 23 May 2019 Abstract: Babe Ruth is a mythic figure in American baseball history. His extraordinary skills and legendary exploits are central to the idea of baseball as America’s national pastime and are woven into the fabric of American history and iconography. Much has been written about Ruth’s life, his extraordinary physical powers, and the legends that grew up around him that made him a mythic figure. The story of Babe Ruth as it has been told, however, has not included its meaning from the perspective of the study of religion and sport. This paper explores the life and legends of Babe Ruth to illustrate the significance of Ruth’s identity as a Catholic in early twentieth-century America and the fundamental connections between Ruth’s story and the Christian myth and ritual that is foundational to American civil religion. Keywords: Baseball; Babe Ruth; American Catholicism 1. Introduction Baseball, America’s “national pastime,” was central to early twentieth-century American mythology. Even if it has been surpassed by football and basketball in the American consciousness and imagination in the contemporary era, baseball serves as a reminder of the virtues and values of the American past. Babe Ruth (1895–1948) was the dominant figure in that narrative. His unparalleled ability to hit home runs farther and with more frequency than anyone before him transformed the game from an institution marred by accusations of gambling and characterized by tough, aggressive play into a demonstration of awe-inspiring power and beauty. -

An American Icon Gallery 1 West Virginia Day Exhibit, 2016 West Virginia and Regional History Center WVU Libraries by Jamie Lester Jerry West looms large in WVU sports history, and indeed in the history of sports in America. His name is a household word and his image is figurally and literally iconic. In 2006, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of West’s enrollment, West Virginia University dedicated a life-size statue of West created by the nationally known Morgantown sculptor Jamie Lester. This case holds a “maquette” (a scaled down model) made by Lester of the sculpture which was installed and dedicated at the WVU Coliseum in February 2007. Jerry West was born on May 28, 1938 in Cabin Creek, West Virginia, and raised in nearby Chelyan. This case includes childhood portraits including his middle school basketball team. Jerry is number 12 in that photo. The Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad Depot at Cabin Creek in Kanawha County, West Virginia. Siblings The West children, left to right, Patricia, Charlie, Hannah, Jerry Parents and Barbara, in October of 2010 in St. Albans, W. Va. Jerry’s parents, Cecil and Howard West. Family and friends referred to David as kind, thoughtful and “a very decent young man.” He was looked up to at East Bank High School as a responsible student leader and popular athlete. His brother Jerry described him simply as “the glue” that held the West family together and “our shining light.” Nine years older than Jerry, the younger brother found comfort in the feeling that David was looking out for him.
