Resources and Groups

Monthly MIPPA Moment: COVID-19 Vaccination Information MIPPA (Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act) has a goal of educating older adults on Medicare’s cost-saving benefits & preventive services.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Emergency Use Authorizations (EUA) for COVID-19 vaccines which have been shown to be safe and effective. Pharmaceutical manufacturers are now working to distribute the vaccine to priority groups: The CDC recommended Phase 1a: Initial supplies go out to health care personnel and long term care (LTC) facility residents. Next, per CDC recommendations, Phase 1b includes: • Frontline essential workers such as fire fighters, police officers, corrections officers, food and agricultural workers, United States Postal Service workers, manufacturing workers, grocery store workers, public transit workers, and those who work in the educational sector. People aged 65 years and older not in LTC facilities, because they are at higher risk from COVID-19. Phase 1c of the CDC recommendations includes: • People aged 16—64 years with underlying medical conditions which increase the risks from COVID-19. Other essential workers, such as in transportation and logistics, food service, housing construction and finance, information technology, communications, energy, law, media, public safety, and public health. How the vaccination process will work: • Two doses are needed - depending on the specific vaccine you get, a second shot 3-4 weeks after your first shot is given. • The side effects from COVID-19 vaccination may feel like flu and might even affect your ability to do daily activities, but they should go away in a few days. • It takes time for your body to build protection after any vaccination. Keep in mind COVID-19 vaccines that require 2 shots may not protect you until a week or two after your second shot. Here’s what to know regarding Medicare: • Medicare covers FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines under Part B. • Medicare covers the lab tests for COVID-19 testing. You pay no out-of-pocket costs. • Medicare covers certain FDA-authorized antibody tests if you were already diagnosed with a known current or known prior COVID-19 infection or suspected current or suspected past COVID-19 infection. • Medicare covers all medically necessary hospitalizations. You’ll still pay for any hospital deductibles, copays, or coinsurances that apply. • If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you have access to these same benefits. Medicare allows these plans to waive cost -sharing for COVID-19 lab tests.

Volunteer Views

Volunteering within your community does a lot more than you could ever begin to imagine. When you volunteer your time and efforts, you start a string of positive events that happen from the time you decide to help out, until long after you’ve done your part. Volunteerism not only helps so many people, organizations, and your community as a whole, but it also brings a significant amount of joy and happiness to ourselves and the people we are helping.

The impact of volunteering within your community stretches to an extensive range. Within our particular communities, there are often several nonprofit organizations looking for volunteers. What many people don’t always understand is the fact that nonprofits only employee a handful of people who get paid to work for that organization. Nonprofits rely heavily on the goodwill and volunteerism of others to help provide services to others who cannot do so themselves.

Volunteerism not only brings about a positive impact on your community and the members within your community, but it also inspires happiness and joy in ourselves. When we take time out of our busy lives and schedules to offer it to people and organizations in need, we create a positive environment. Studies have shown that through community engagement and volunteerism, it promotes a much happier lifestyle for ourselves. (www.thriveglobal.com)

COVID Information

COVID Vaccine and scams:

As the country begins to distribute COVID-19 vaccines, there's no doubt scammers are already scheming.

Medicare covers the COVID-19 vaccine, so there will be no cost to you. If anyone asks you to share your Medicare Number or pay for access to the vaccine, you can bet it's a scam.

Here's what to know: • You can't pay to put your name on a list to get the vaccine. • You can't pay to get early access to a vaccine. Don't share your personal or financial information if someone calls, texts, or emails you promising access to the vaccine for a fee. We must always be vigilant in protecting our personal information. If you hear of this happening in your community, please call the WI SMP Helpline, (888) 818-2611, to report it.

If the DeForest Area Community and Senior Center knows information about accessing the vaccine, we will get the information out to you immediately.

Leftovers and Food Safety To ensure that leftovers are safe to eat, make sure the food is cooked to a safe temperature and refrigerate the leftovers promptly. Not cooking food to a safe temperature and leaving food out at an unsafe temperature are the two main causes of foodborne illness.

Keep Food out of the "Danger Zone" Bacteria grow rapidly between the temperatures of 40° F and 140° F.  After food is safely cooked, hot food must be kept hot at 140° F or warmer to prevent bacterial growth. Within 2 hours of cooking food or after it is removed from an appliance keeping it warm, leftovers must be refrigerated.  Cold perishable food, such as chicken salad or a platter of deli meats, should be kept at 40° F or below.  When serving food at a buffet, keep food hot in chafing dishes, slow cookers, or warming trays. Keep food cold by nesting dishes in bowls of ice or use small serving trays and replace them often.  Discard any perishable that have been left out for more than 2 hours at room temperature.  Cover leftovers, wrap them in airtight packaging, or seal them in storage containers. These practices help keep bacteria out, retain moisture, and prevent leftovers from picking up odors from other food in the refrigerator. Immediately refrigerate or freeze the wrapped leftovers for rapid cooling.

Love Stories

Jerry and Ginny Brokish They met in 1975 through mutual friends. They were married in May of 1976. They share a daughter who lives in Madison and a son who is in their hearts everyday. Ginny likes to garden, crochet and keep up with current events. Jerry likes to waterski and go for long walks. Together they enjoy watching PBS.

They both retired in 2009. Ginny worked for the DASD for 22 years. Jerry worked for the School of Veterinary Medicine for 33.5 years working in animal care. Eight days after retirement Jerry showed up to play cards at the Center. You may know Jerry from the meal delivery. He started in 2011 and has been non stop ever since. He misses interacting with people and finding out how they are really doing.

Cec and Mike Dietrick They were married 47 years ago, choosing the date because it was the only time Mike’s brother, the best man could be home from Vietnam. They have 3 children, 2 sons and a daughter plus 5 ½ grandchildren. Mike has been an important part of the Center since the beginning, as his father, Matt Dietrick was the administrator, back in 1984. Mike was a bartender and eventually ran the bar at the Center for the many wedding receptions held here. After Mike retired from Ball Corporation in 2015 he figured he needed to do some exercise, so he came to the Center. He figures he has been coming to the Center longer than anyone currently. Mike treats the center as his second home, playing pool three days a week, Euchre on Mondays and Sheepshead three days a week. Prior to COVID Mike was cleaning and closing the Center on Fridays.

Cec has enjoyed Yoga at the Center. Before COVID, Cec was doing Hot Yoga 9 times a week, as well as babysitting their grandkids. Mike and Cec work together in their garden and creating new decorations for their yard. Even with the quarantine they make sure to go somewhere every day just to break up things, often to grab a coffee from various coffee establishments. They like to support local restaurants by ordering curbside meals.

Mike also enjoys playing in pool leagues and played golf 3-4 times a week this past summer. He keeps busy with wood working and yard work. This year he started making wood cartoon character cut outs, a fun new hobby. Safe to say he really misses the center and is looking forward to a new normal hopefully soon.

Karen & Dick Laufenberg Karen and Dick met while working at the University of Madison and have been married for 54 years! Together they raised their 5 boys in Windsor. They now enjoy their sons, daughters-in-law and 6 granddaughters ranging in age from 3 to 18. They also enjoy their dog Brandi. Together they share a few hobbies including gardening, walking, reading and spending time with family. Recently they began snow shoeing again. Karen enjoys jigsaw puzzles and adult coloring. Dick enjoys working outside on the lawn.

Karen started volunteering at the Community Center in 2006 assisting with computer entry work. She participated in the Red Hatters and fitness classes. She really has been a jack of all trades helping with whatever has been asked of her. She is currently a member of the LINKages committee connecting the youth to older adults. Dick has been involved volunteering since 2012 with the Center working in the kitchen. He has been lead kitchen volunteer, always willing to pitch in. We have never met a more dependable, hard-working guy. The program could not run without him!

Award-winning author and linguist, Vivian Probst will virtually discuss her new novel “Dissolving Her Despair”, being released on February 18th on the Center website Vivian Probst, vivacious storyteller and author of several books, is putting the spotlight on an extraordinary mystery in Dissolving Her Despair, her newest book. The story focuses on a brilliantly successful bank president who can manage other people’s finances but not her own. Deeply in debt, she faces public humiliation if her secret is discovered.

These stories began when, in her own life, Probst could not overcome a need to spend more than she earned. Her new book reveals financial life lessons she gained from her main character, Avery Victoria Spencer. Probst learns that sometimes moving forward is impossible because we’ve left parts of ourselves behind.

You’ll learn more about this intriguing mystery when you view her video created for the DeForest Area Community and Senior Center. Vivian will also discuss WEnglish, a new way to read and write English that champions the right for women to have their own words beyond male connotations.

Dissolving Her Despair is scheduled to launch on Amazon Kindle on February 7. It will be available in English with a free download of its WEnglish version. Printed copies will be available through Amazon shortly after. The WEnglish version is titled “Tha Womun Who Forgot Who Shi Was”. The video will be available at www.deforestcenter.org and on the Center’s Facebook page.
