Today, you will review works by two American writers of the early twentieth century. You will read a passage from a short story by Willa Sibert Cather and listen to an audio recording of a poem by Amy Lowell. As you review the works, consider how the writers use imagery to convey themes about separation and the emotions that a place can evoke so you can compose a written response.

Read the passage from “The Namesake” (1907). Then answer the questions.

1 SEVEN of us, students, sat one evening in Hartwell’s studio on the Boulevard St. Michel. We were all fellow-countrymen; one from New Hampshire, one from Colorado, another from Nevada, several from the farmlands of the Middle West, and I myself from California. Lyon Hartwell, though born abroad, was simply, as every one knew, “from America.” He seemed, almost more than any other one living man, to mean all of —from ocean to ocean. When he was in Paris, his studio was always open to the seven of us who were there that evening, and we intruded upon his leisure as often as we thought permissible.

2 Although we were within the terms of the easiest of all intimacies, and although the great sculptor, even when he was more than usually silent, was at all times the most gravely cordial of hosts, yet, on that long remembered evening, as the sunlight died on the burnished brown of the horse-chestnuts below the windows, a perceptible dullness yawned through our conversation.

3 We were, indeed, somewhat low in spirit, for one of our number, Charley Bentley, was leaving us indefinitely, in response to an imperative summons from home. To-morrow his studio, just across the hall from Hartwell’s, was to pass into other hands, and Bentley’s luggage was even now piled in discouraged resignation before his door. The various bales and boxes seemed literally to weigh upon us as we sat in his neighbor’s hospitable rooms, drearily putting in the time until he should leave us to catch the ten o’clock express for Dieppe.

4 The day we had got through very comfortably, for Bentley made it the occasion of a somewhat pretentious luncheon at Maxim’s. There had been twelve of us at table, and the two young Poles were so thirsty, the Gascon so fabulously entertaining, that it was near upon five o’clock when we put down our liqueur glasses for the last time, and the red, perspiring waiter, having pocketed the reward of his arduous and protracted services, bowed us affably to the door, flourishing his napkin and brushing back the streaks of wet, black hair from his rosy forehead. Our guests having betaken themselves belated to their respective engagements, the rest of us returned with Bentley—only to be confronted by the depressing array before his door. A glance about his denuded rooms had sufficed to chill the glow of the afternoon, and we fled across the hall in a body and begged Lyon Hartwell to take us in.

5 Bentley had said very little about it, but we all knew what it meant to him to be called home. Each of us knew what it would mean to himself, and each had felt something of that quickened sense of opportunity which comes at seeing another man in any way counted out of the race. Never had the game seemed so enchanting, the chance to play it such a piece of unmerited, unbelievable good fortune.

6 It must have been, I think, about the middle of October, for I remember that the sycamores were almost bare in the Luxembourg Gardens that morning, and the terraces about the queens of France were strewn with crackling brown leaves. The fat red roses, out the summer long on of the old flower woman at the corner, had given place to dahlias and purple asters. First glimpses of autumn toilettes flashed from the carriages; wonderful little bonnets nodded at one along the Champs-Elysées; and in the Quarter an occasional feather boa, red or black or white, brushed one’s coat sleeve in the gay twilight of the early evening. The crisp, sunny autumn air was all day full of the stir of people and carriages and of the cheer of salutations; greetings of the students, returned brown and bearded from their holiday, gossip of people come back from Trouville, from St. Valery, from Dieppe, from all over Brittany and the Norman coast. Everywhere was the joyousness of return, the taking up again of life and work and play.

7 I had felt ever since early morning that this was the saddest of all possible seasons for saying good-bye to that old, old city of youth, and to that little corner of it on the south shore which since the Dark Ages themselves—yes, and before—has been so peculiarly the land of the young.

8 I can recall our very postures as we lounged about Hartwell’s rooms that evening, with Bentley making occasional hurried trips to his desolated workrooms across the hall—as if haunted by a feeling of having forgotten something—or stopping to poke nervously at his perroquets, which he had bequeathed to Hartwell, gilt cage and all. Our host himself sat on the couch, his big, bronze-like shoulders backed up against the window, his shaggy head, beaked nose, and long chin cut clean against the gray light.

Willa Sirbert Cather's melancholy short story "The Namesake" and Amy Lowell's romantic poem "In a Garden" both use vivid imagery to convey strong feelings.Imagery is important because it connects the reader to the scene with details they can relate and imagine.Both of the authors emotions are conveyed in their work with their detailed descriptions. "The Namesake" is a melancholy story about an artist packing up from his art studio to return home. His fellow artists are quite depressed as they spend their last day with him. Cather begins with details of where all the seven students are from "We were all fellow- countrymen; New Hampshire, one from Colorado, another from Nevada, several from the farmlands of the Middle West, and I myself from California" (Cather 1).These details help the reader understand the connection the students have to each other and the strong bond they have due to the fact that they are all from different places away from home. Before studying at "Hartwell's studio on the Boulevard St. Michel"(Cather 1) , another detail added to add authenticity to the story, these men had never known each other but they did have things in common that bonded them strongly together. Firstly they were all countrymen, secondly they were all away from home, thirdly they all loved art, and finally they were all on this adventure together. The author was aware that as a reader; one will not feel this connection that they did to each other so she puts the audience in the scene along with her characters. Cather uses detailed description " The crisp, sunny autumn air was all day full of the stir of people and carriages and the cheer of salvations; greetings of the students, returned brown and bearded from their holiday, gossip of people come back from Trouville, from St. Valery, from Dieppe, from all over Britany and the Norman coast. Everywhere was the joyousness of return, the taking up again of life and work and play"(Cather 6) to harshly contrast the depressed ambiance of the students at the studio. With her vivid details of joy and light heartedness going on around her characters the author is able to convey the drastic emotional difference of the characters themselves. The description of Bentley on his last day "Bentley making occasional hurried trips to his desolated workrooms across the hall-as if haunted by a feeling of having forgotten something-or stopping to poke nervously at his perroquets"(Cather 8) showed the readers instead of telling them that he was anxious for his next journey in life. Readers feel as if they are right there in the moment experiencing the same feeling and surroundings due to Cather's excellent use of imagery. In contrast to "The Namesake" feelings of romance and longing are being conveyed in Lowell's poem "In a Garden" . Lowell's details give the reader a sense of peace. With an abundance of details such as "With it's gurgling and running/ With its leaping, and deep cool murmur"(Lowell) and " High in the arc of night/ And the scent of lilacs was heavy with stillness"(Lowell) show that the atmosphere is very serene and not chaotic. The narrator would not be able to observe and personify " Iris dabble their feet and rustle to a passing wind"(Lowell) without time to take in his whereabouts. These images are so detailed and specific that the narrator must have time to observe.These details are crucial because they

reflect the narrators emotions at the moment. Due to the intricate description of the garden the reader can postulate that the narrator is waiting for something. This is confirmed when he says " I wished for night and you" (Lowell). Saying that the "Lilacs were heavy with stillness" shows that even the garden around him was feeling the anticipation still, waiting for something to happen. The author personifes the plants and objects in the garden to portray the emotion and the suspense of the narrator. This imagery is successful because the reader just like everything in the garden is afraid to breathe scared it may ruin the moment and what is to happen. Neither of these passages would have the same affect without the vast amount details that conveyed the emotions of the pieces. Without the descriptions Cather's short story would have been Bentley moved away and we were all sad the end. Instead it put the reader in the shoes of the narrator. The reader was mourning the departure of Bentley along side the characters because Cather used details to make it realistic and relatable. The same could be said with Lowell's poem. Without the details it could be paraphrased to I was waiting in the garden to see this girl I fancy". Where is the suspense in that? Where is the romance? Lowell brings the garden to life with her descriptions. Not only is the narrator waiting for this girl, but so is the irises, the lilacs and the fountains. The whole garden is still waiting for something to happen. Imagery plays a huge role in conveying emotion. Imagery brings life and feelings to a piece and both Cather and Lowell were able to do exactly that.

"The Namesake" and In a Garden both convey feelings that come from the mood of those things that surround the characters. By using subtle or at times profound imagory, both authors are ellicting their strong feelings without at first outright proclaiming them. In "The Namesake", the feelings are one of sadness at seeing a friend go and yet a joy found in less competition among the students. "In the Garden" depicts the love of someone and how they truly feel, their hopes, dreams, wishes that they want above all else to come true.

In "The Namesake", one of the Americans Charlie Bentley is called home and must leave the group of students. Their saddness over this sudden news is conveyed in how they respond to his packing of his things for his final departure from Paris. The narrator lamented, "and Bentley's luggage was even now piled in discouraged resignation before his door. The various bales and boxes seemed literally to weigh upon us..."(Par3). The way in which his luggage is personified ellicts a strong sense of what the group of students themselves are thinking. They do not want him to depart from them and are stuck in this state of gloomy despair because of it. Even though they never outright say they will miss him, their interpretation of his packed luggage depicts what is racing through each and every one of their minds. Also, even in the novel the enormity and finality of Bentley's leaving hits them full force while returning to his apartment. The narrator claimed, "A glance about his denuded rooms had sufficed to chill the glow of the afternoon, and we fled across the hall in a body and begged Lyon Hartwell to take us in"(Par 4). Returning from lunch, this scene of a desolate room was enough to bring back the strong sense of despair thaty each student was trying to avoid. Even by going to Lyon's rooms, they are only trying to mask their sadness with something else. They are just waiting out for the inevitable to happen, for Bentley to leave. In "In the Garden", Nature is instead used to convey strong feelings of love that are discovered later in the poem. The narrator Amy Lowell starts out by describing this beautiful garden, perfect in its own sense. It is an Eden of sorts, more beautiful than anything. However, she goes on to proclaim her love for another, comparing this person to the garden, wanting to see them in it and be with them. She proclaimed, " I wanted to see you in the swimming pool". This shows she wants the one thing she loves in the place that is the most beautiful of all. You begin to believe in the beginning that there is only a garden, only this serene slice of nature that she is content with. But it is only a prelude, a way of describing the person she loves and wants to be with. The garden itself may only be metaphorical, a paradise where she is living with this person, loving this person, and living happily ever after. In conclusion, both "The Namesake" and "In a Garden" ellict strong emotions through their imagery. While "The Namesake" shows a theme of sadness at a certain characters departure, there is almost a silver lining in that the group will pick up the pieces and move forward. In "In a Garden", the author describes what seems to be Eden, but then uses it to explain how much she loves another dearly. She wants to see this person in the garden, whose beauty and tranquility she sees in this other person. It is a story of love, one that, even though not outright, can still be felt by anyone who reads it.

The passage from The Namesake by Willa Sibert Cather and the poem In a Gardenby Amy Lowell both use imagery to convey the feelings the speaker is feeling. In both writings the speaker introduces the tense scenery and explains the feelings the surroundings brought about. Throughout both writings the use of imagery helps build comprehension of the feelings of the speaker in various ways. The poem In a Garden by Amy Lowell starts off with the speaker describing a garden. Lowell starts off by saying "gushing from the mouths of the stone men to spread at ease across the sky..the water fills the garden with its rushing in the midst of the quiet of close clipped lawns." She describes the beauty that enchants the garden. At this point the speaker is admiring her serene surroundings. This use of imagery conveys that during this time the speaker is calm. The speaker is at a state of peace and tranquility in the midst of the garden. However, Lowell then goes on to say "And I wished for night and you. I wanted to see you in the swimming pool." At this line the speakers shifts from admiring the garden to missing her lover and wishing he was there in the garden with her. The use of imagery in describing the peace that the speaker had in the beginning let the reader know that she was calm. On the other hand, the use of imagery in the shift towards the end of the poem lets the reader know that the speaker is missing her lover. She describes how she wanted to see his body glistening in the light and bathing in the pool. Lowell uses imagery at this point to paint a picture to the reader of what the speaker really wanted to see. In the same way, the passage from The Namesake by Willa Sibert Cather uses imagery to explain the sequence of events that took place on the day Bentley was called to return home. She explains how the other men were sympathetic towards him and in a sense knew why he was being called home. In paragraph 3 she says "We were, indeed, somewhat low in spirit, for one of our number, Charley Bentley, was leaving us indefinitely." By her saying that everyone was in low spirit she conveyed that everyone was feeling sad. She then goes on to say, in paragraph 3, "The various bales and boxes seemed literally to weigh upon us." Meaning that at this point in the passage the men were in some way entering a state of depression. They were being weighed down by the fact that one the men had to return home. In conclusion, throughout both writings the use of imagery is used to convey the feelings of the speaker. In the poem the speaker describes the scene of the garden she was in and gave off the feeling of peace. In the passage the speaker directly says how the situation made the men feel sympathetic toward Bentley and they are sad that he has to leave.

In the passage from ¨The Namesake¨ and the poem ¨In a Garden,¨ there are strong emotions evoked through the way each was constructed. The major use of imagery not only paints a picture in the reader´s mind, but allows them to feel some way and delve more into why the scenery is described as such.

In Cather´s ¨The Namesake,¨ there is much art involved, considering the passage consists of art students. Besides that, the emotions are evident in the way the author writes about how the students felt when Charley Bentley was obligated to leave his studio in America behind. The whole passage makes you feel sad for the other students as well as Bentley, because you can sense the melancholy within their last day. Despite their attempts to try to divert their attention with a friendly lunch, they returned to Bentley´s quarters only to be faced with his belongings in front of the door (¨Our guests had betaken themselves belated to their respective engagements, the rest of us returned with Bentley - only to be confronted by the depressing array before his door.¨) (Paragraph 4). To add, the season in which the author chose for Bentley to depart in was Autumn, which the narrator claims, ¨I had felt ever since early orning that this was the saddest of all possible seasons for saying good-bye to that old, old city of youth . . .¨ (Paragraph 7). This is quite a reasonable way to relate the dreary tone with that of Autumn, where leaves shrivel up and die, and all liveliness fades into the monotony of winter.

In the second story, the poem of ¨In a Garden,¨ the true spectacle of the story does not show itself until close to the end. We are not aware that the story concerns a desire for a lover, because all that is talked about are vivid descpriptions of the natural world around the narrator. This allows the reader to form an image in their mind of the lovely garden, and contrast to the depressing one of ¨The Namesake,¨ is a very beautiful and bright scene. Later on, we learn that the narrator wishes to see their her lover in the nature, which could hve lead to slight feelings of sadness or loneliness upon not. The narrator says, ¨And I wished for night, and you,¨ (0:59-1:02), directly referring to her lover and her to see him.

Overall, the two tales of ¨The Namesake¨ and ¨In a Garden,¨ despite having conflicting tones, are written through strong imagery and visualization. Without that tool, these stories may not have been as powerful, and their stories may not have been told as effectively.

Both passages talked about personal feeling. One of them talked about a friend leaving, and the other one talked about love. "The Namesake", one of the students was leaving. the author described how devastated he was. In "In a Garden", the author: Amy Lowell described about wishing for her lover to be with her. She wanted to watch how beautiful he (or maybe she) was. Just feeling his/her presence will make her feel complete.

In "The Namesake", by Willa Sibert Cather: even though the authour wasn't in love with Bentley, she was devaststed that Bentley was leaving. In result, she went out for luncheon at Maxim's along with other students as well. "We were, indeed somewhat low in spirit, for one of our number, Charley Bentley, was leaving us indefinitely, in response to an imperative summons from home.". Willa Sibert Cather was describing Bentley's legidement in leaving. ".... and Bentley's luggage was even now piled in discouraged resignation before his door.". She and other students understood Bentley wanted to return home. It felt for him that he had to and was meant for Bentley to stay. "Bentley had said very little about it, but we all knew what it meant to him to be called home.".

"In a Garden" by Amy Lowell, she described the theme of her garden, how beautiful it was. She compared the garden to her lover, how it would be even more beautiful is her lover was there. She described "White and shining in the self reflect water, while the moon rode over the garden.". She made her lover seem as a high standard: praising the theme of the garden and descripcency of the person she loves and admires. Her personal feelings for that person is a lot stronger, compared to Willa Sibert Cather towards Bentley. Her details about the garden shows me that she's happy what she has, but would be more happy the person who she's in love with woud be in her swimming pool. "And I wished for night and you. I wanted to see you in the swimming pool ". " ... and you and your whiteness bathing."

In both " The Namesake" and the poem " In a Garden the authors uses vivid imagery to convey strong feelings. The story " The Namesake" by Willa Sibert Cather is about how Lyon Hartwell and six other students who went to Hartwell's studio to see art and they notice a change in Charles Bentley. The poem " In a Garden" by Amy Lowell is about a woman that has a garden and her garden makes her think about a secret lover.

In " The Namesake" by Wila Sibert Cather a man name Lyon Hartwell and six of his friends are visiting the Hartwell studio to visit there friend Charles Bentley. After some time there they notice he isn't the same he seems sad. In the text it says " we were indeed somehwat low in spirit... Charles Bentley was leaving us indefinitely.... Bentley's luggage was even now piled in discouraged resignation...." This statement gives the reader a visual image of how they were sad and how bentleys luggage was piled up.

In "In a Garden by Amy Lowell a woman has a garden and everytime she is in her garden ahe admires it and it makes her think about her secret lover. In the poem she talks about the garden's fountains, lilacs. Then she talks about how she wants to see her secret lover in the pool and wants to see him that night.

This shows that the students didn't have high or positive hopes for Bentley. They felt depressed when he left to go home. In the second story In a garden this author uses imagery to show the emotion of peace. In the poem she talks about how she likes her garden. Her garden is what makes her happy and she doesn't want that to go away. She's more of a positive person. She can also be depressed to because the garden is all she has.

Feelings connects with scenery and how a person can relate their feelings to what they see. In the texts, "The Namesake," by Willa Cather and In a Garden, by Amy Lowell, both authors in cooperate imagery to demonstrate their feelings how they connect to their surroundings. Cather expresses her feelings of her friend leaving while Lowell chooses to connect with the readers about her gone lover. To begin, Cather displays her feeling of being melancholy by connecting it to the happy

setting of a greeting campus. In the passage it states, "October, for I remember that the

sycamores were almost bare in the Luxembourg Gardens that morning, and the terraces

about the queens of France were strewn with crackling brown leaves[...] Everywhere was the joyousness of return, the taking up again of life and work and play." (6). After close friend, Bentley, had been called back home, Cather and her friends were hit hardly that their friend was leaving. She expresses the melancholy feeling by explaining the time that her friend left. He was leaving around the time that students were returning back to school and everywhere it was festive. She describes how she knows that it was this time by explaining the trees and the October setting. Her feelings are contradictory to what everyone else should have been feeling. Her friend was leaving in the most exciting and welcoming moment. People were back to work and play, while Cather and her friends moped around waiting for the awful goodbye. Furthermore, Lowell uses the garden that so much reminds her of her lover, to express the sorrow and desire of wanting them back. In the poem it says, " and I wished for night and you. [...] I wanted to see you in the swimming pool, white and shinning and the silver flecked water, while the moon road over the garden, high in the arch of night." (00:59-1:15). Her Lowell is expressing her dire to see her lover once again. She gives a change of setting by

reflecting upon wishing for night time while her lover swam in a pool. She describes how they

looked while swimming and how perfectly the moon was high in the sky reflecting off of her

lover. Lowell takes the scenery of her garden to admire how much it reminded her of her lover. She focuses on the flowers and other aspects of the garden that stood out to her. In conclusion, both authors feelings are depressing for someone they have loved was gone. Cather elaborates on her friend leaving and how it affects herself and others. While Lowell shows desire and need for her lover by connecting her feelings to her remindful garden. People mourn and become upset in different ways. Both of these authors had mutual feelings but each of the setting they described contributed to their feelings.

Have you ever missed someone so much that you couldn't stop thinking about them? We all have. The authors of "The Namesake" and "In a Garden" aim to capture a glimpse of what life was like with those they grew fond of, and lost. The passage depicts students traveling to Paris, and one of them leaving for America. The poem details a garden--one which serves as a reminder of the author's lover. Both literary works utilize such imagery in conveying their inner feelings of love, or resentment. In "The Namesake," Cather uses phrases such as "fellow-countrymen" and "one of our number" to symbolize the close connection between each of the seven students. This builds up to strengthen the effect that Bentley leaving has on readers, and show how greatly it affected the passage's characters. The author then emphasizes the toll that this takes on the students by shifting tone; "luggage...piled in discouraged resignation"--words that convey resentment and despair. The poem, on the other hand, describes a serene environment--a garden, and then explains how it reminds the author of her lover who is no longer there. The lines "I wished for night and you" and "I wanted to see you in the swimming pool" tie in with imagery such as "the moon rode over the garden" and "shining in the silver-flecked water" to deeply connect readers with the author's feelings; how much she missed her lover. Her relentless focus on creating an image of the garden demonstrate its importance in her past relationship, and indicate that she still mourns losing her partner.

Every piece of writing has a significance to it, whether it is a specific type of literature or an essay written to inform, etc. In each of those pieces there must be literary devices used to keep the reader's attention or else there would have been no point to have written it at all. Both "The Namesake" and In a Garden contain immense amounts of imagery which draw in the audience's attention until the very end. Right out of the gate in Willa Sibert Cather's short story, "The Namesake", the use of imagery is clear. The narrator describes briefly where each of the seven men came from so the audience can get a sense of where all these men have been. As the author introduces the depressing tone the descriptive vocabulary builds up to create a beautiful picture inside the mind of the reader. When all the men are together upon their last night as a whole group of seven, Cather states, "...as the sunlight died on the burnished brown of the horse-chestnuts below the windows, a perceptible dullness yawned through our conversation." (Cather 2). Through her utilization of larger vocabulary words that flow within one another, a pictured is painted of the lowering sun set upon the trees outside the studio's windows. In the same way, the author vividly writes about the waiter after their giant luncheon, "...the red and perspiring waiter...flourishing his napkin and brushing back the streaks of wet, black hair from his rosy forehead." (4). Once again, an image of a tired but happy- from his big tip- waiter is beginning to form inside the reader's mind. So all in all, the imagery within this text is so important to the entirety of the story; without it the idea of "Bentley" leaving would not have been so upsetting to the viewer. In the same way, Amy Lowell's poem was filled with descriptive vocabulary as well as symbolization to make the reader perceive the loss of the main character's lover in an even grander way. From the start, Lowell replaces basic words such as fountains with more creative names such as "stone men" (Lowell 00:12-00:13). This depicts a more intense scene in one's mind than compared to just flat out saying fountains. To continue, all throughout this poem there is a major sense of loss and longing for someone else- it is not out right stated but through context clues it is understood greatly. When describing each piece of the garden, more saddening terms are used to still hold on to that idea of loneliness, "marble fountains/ yellowed with much water" (00:40-00:43). Stating that the fountain is now yellow because of the water is symbolism as well as imagery for the narrator's loss. She is now depress (yellow) because of the man or woman that left her (water). The author is showing what emotionally became of her because of her past relationship with the use of garden items. Instead of flat out telling the audience the pain she is feeling, it is conveyed in her imagery/symbolism. To conclude, each of these pieces were so impacting on the audience because of the authors utilization of imagery along with symbolism. People feel in a more intense way when there is a bit of information left up to the imagination to figure out. Lowell achieved her feelings of longing and despair through imagery and symbolism as well as Cather achieved his emotions of sadness and unspoken loss through symbolism and imagery. Pieces of writing have a larger impact when certain things are left up to human reasoning.

In the text "The Namesake", Willa Cather uses her sense of imagery to provide a reasoning as to why she was sad that her partner was going back to paris. for example, "bentley had said very little about it, but we all knew it meant to him to be called home" meaning that although bentley didnt say anything about him leaving, everyone already knew what was going on with him. Even though the students are just partners to eachother, their feelings to one another are sympathetic. In the poem "In a Garden"the author uses imagery of the garden in order to analyze that the character's love and desire for her partner is getting stronger and stronger.
