PUB DATE 80 NOTE 25p.; Illustrations will not reproduce clearly. PUB TYPE Historical Materials (060) EDRS PRICE MF01/PC01 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS Government Employees; Government Role; *Public Agencies;_ United States History IDENTIFIERS *PoStal Service ABSTRACT This eight-chapter illustrated booklet chronicles the history of the U.S. Post Office from its establishment by the Continental Congress in 1775 to the present. Chapter 1, "The Colonists," describes the postal service before the Revolutionary War. Benjamin Franklin's appointment as the first Postmaster General of the U.S. and his many contributions to the postal serviceare covered in Chapter 2, "Father of the U.S. Postal Service." Chapter 3, "The Revolution and After," portrays the huge increase that occurred in the U.S. population from the time of Andrew Jackson to the Civil War, the resulting huge increase in mail volume that occurred, and the actions the postal system took to overcome the problems. In Chapter 4, "The Pony Express," the 18-month life span of the pony express is chronicled as are the reasons for its demise. Two Postmaster Generals, Montgomery Blair and John Wanamaker, are portrayed in Chapter 5, "Two Postal Titans." These two men provided leadership which resulted in improved employee attitudes and new services to customers, such as free rural delivery and pneumatic tubes. Chapter 6, "Postal Stamps," tells the history of the postage stamp, and how a stamp is developed. Chapter 7, "Moving the Mail," presents a history of the mail service and the different modes of transportation on which it depends.

Hotchner, Dr. Yamil H. Kouri and Yacov Tsachor. Our featured speaker will be our Editor, Dr. William Moskoff, who will give a talk on “The People's War: Defiance and Resistance During World War II in the Soviet Union.” Bill is no stranger to this kind of presentation, having given one of the three Rossica papers at the National Postal Museum’s Blount Symposium last year. The Annual General Meeting will give members a chance to toss kudos or hurl invective at the officers in person, and there will be news and an announcement or two that should be of considerable interest to everyone.

  • Bibliography of Cuban Philatelic Literature -- Internet Edition Ernesto Cuesta
Bibliography of Cuban Philatelic Literature -- Internet Edition Ernesto Cuesta Adelante--There are two entries for Adelante in this bibliography. The first one under <A> is for the philatelic journal Adelante published in Santiago de Cuba in the 1920s. The second one <ADEL> is for a non-philatelic newspaper from the 1930s that I also believe (but have not been able to confirm) was published in Santiago de Cuba from the content of some articles cited in this bibliography (see articles from 1935 under Compañía Cubana de Aviación). <A> Adelante (Onward) Santiago de Cuba (La Maya), Cuba: Journal of the "Club de Intercambio de Cuba" (Cuban Exchange Club). Published quarterly from July 1921 to at least April 1928 (issue no. 28). Director José D. Sagué. The journal is published primarily in Spanish, but has sections in English. <HORN9600> cites as a source The Collectors Club of New York. The known issues of this journal are listed following: Yr.II, No.7, Jan 1923, pp.1, 12-15,?; Yr.II, No.8, Apr 1923, pp.2-7, 18-19,?; Yr.IV (III?), No.13, Jul 1924, pp.4-7, 22-29, 36-37,?; Yr.VI, Nos.21-22, Jul-Oct 1926, pp.26-27,?; Yr.VII, No.24, Apr 1927, pp.1-7, 12-13, 16-17,?; Yr.VII, No.25, Jul 1927, pp.6-9, 14-19, 24-25,?; Yr.VIII, No.27, Jan 1928, pp.2-17, 24-25,?; Yr.VIII, No.28, Apr 1928, 32 pp. Listed page numbers are those of which I have a photocopy; question marks after cited page numbers indicate that I do not know whether the issue contained additional pages.
