Oder waren wir stattdessen nur demselben Sturm ausgesetzt? Insbesondere Musiker:innen sind nicht mit seetauglichen Schiffen in diese Krise gestartet, deren Konsequenzen uns alle noch für lange Zeit beschäftigen werden. Statt uns also im Trockenen zu wähnen, sollten wir Transformationsprozesse anstoßen, die prekären Arbeitsbedingungen, Verdrängung und Marginalisierung ein Ende setzen. Dazu braucht es breite Allianzen innerhalb der Szene dieser Stadt und darüber hinaus, genauso werden sich aber auch Politik und Kunst enger verknüpfen müssen. Deshalb blicke ich bei Pop-Kultur mit großer Spannung einem Panel mit der Künstlerin Balbina und Ella Rohwer vom Verband Pro Musik entgegen. Ebenso neugierig bin ich auf die Arbeit der Berliner Kollektive und des RambaZamba Theaters. Die nämlich beweisen, wie Solidarität künstlerisch und sozial gelebt wird. Das braucht es mehr als zuvor. Denn je mehr wir gemeinsam aufbauen können, desto besser können wir einander vor diesem und allen folgenden Stürmen schützen. Are we all, as it’s been said again and again, in the same boat? Or have we only been subjected to the same storm? Musicians, in particular, did not start off into this crisis with seaworthy ships, the consequences of which will affect us all for a long time to come. So instead of thinking that we have reached dry land, we should initiate processes of transformation that put an end to precarious working conditions, displacement and marginalisation. This will require broad alliances within the scene of this city and beyond, and likewise, politics and art will have to link up more closely. That’s why I’m looking forward with great anticipation to a panel at Pop-Kultur with the artist Balbina and Ella Rohwer from the Pro Musik association. I am no less curious about the work of the Berlin collectives and the RambaZamba Theatre. They are all demonstrating how solidarity is put into practice, both artistically and socially. This is something we need now more than ever, because the more we build together, the better we can shelter each other from this storm and the ones to come. 4 Welcome Prof. Dieter Gorny Aufsichtsratsvorsitzender, Initiative Musik gemeinnützige Projektgesellschaft mbH Für viele stellt das Geschäft mit der Musik einen Traumjob dar, der sich im März 2020 mit einem Schlag in einen Albtraum verwandelte. Tausende von Menschen waren plötzlich zur Untätigkeit verdammt. Was aber mitnichten bedeutete, dass sie sich nicht mit vielen Ideen und umso mehr Tatkraft einbrachten – im Gegenteil! Ihr Engagement war beispiellos und sollte uns allen zum Vorbild gereichen. Nachdem das Festival Pop-Kultur bereits im Vorjahr mit einem ausgeklügelten Digitalkonzept bewies, dass auch in der Zwangspause ein Innovationsschub möglich ist, so tut es das auch in diesem Jahr. Da reicht allein ein Blick auf die mehr als 15 sogenannten Commissioned Works, interdisziplinär ausgerichtete Auftragswerke, die im Miteinander von Mensch und Technologie ebenso pandemiegerechte wie visionäre, multimediale Live-Konzepte umsetzen. Noch mag der Albtraum nicht vollends ausgestanden sein. Bei Pop-Kultur bekommen wir aber heute schon die Träume eines besseren Morgens präsentiert. Und zwar ganz praktisch, denn diese Menschen verstehen etwas von ihrem Job. For many of us working in the music business, a dream job turned into a nightmare in one fell swoop. In March 2020, thousands of people were suddenly thwarted into inactivity. But that didn’t mean that they ran out of ideas or energy – on the contrary! Their unprecedented commitment can serve as an example to all of us. Having proven last year that a surge of innovation is possible even during a forced break, the Pop-Kultur festival is doing it again this year. Just take a look at the more than 15 commissioned works, interdisciplinary creations implementing live multimedia concepts that are equally pandemic-compliant and visionary with their interaction of people and technology. The nightmare might not yet be completely over, but at Pop-Kultur we are already seeing dreams of a better tomorrow. And in a very practical way, as these people know something about their job. 5 Vorwort Am Anfang der Planung für Pop-Kultur 2021 stand die Ungewissheit. Die Welt war eine andere geworden, und nichts schien mehr sicher zu sein. Eines immerhin war uns klar. Nach der digitalen Ausgabe im Vorjahr wollten wir wieder ein Festival mit Live-Auftritten organisieren. Wir versuchten, ein Konzept mit stark reduzierten Kapazitäten im Innenraum, kleinen Außenbühnen und einem lokal orientierten Booking zu entwickeln. Einerseits war es uns wichtig, nicht durch mögliche Einreisebeschränkungen große Teile unseres Programms zu verlieren und andererseits erschien uns eine starke Einbindung regionaler Künstler:innen ein wichtiges Signal der Solidarität zu senden. Auch im Inneren haben wir uns neu erfunden. Das neue Programmteam, bestehend aus Yeşim Duman, Leyla Yenirce, Pamela Owusu-Brenyah und Christian Morin, nahm die Arbeit auf, ohne sich jemals in dieser Konstellation gleichzeitig im selben Raum aufzuhalten. Endlose Digitalkonferenzen boten die einzige Möglichkeit, kuratorische Ideen auszutauschen und zu entwickeln. Damit gingen auch viele Herausforderungen einher, denen wir uns stellen mussten. Trotz dieser schwierigen Grundbedingungen ist es uns gelungen, unter Pandemiebedingungen die beste Ausgabe von Pop-Kultur zu gestalten, die wir uns hätten ausmalen können. Neben Konzerten, Commissioned Works, Talks, Workshops, Filmen und Installationen gibt es in diesem Jahr viele Besonderheiten zu entdecken. Und zwar live, echt, in Farbe, im gemeinsamen Miteinander. Sechs ausgewählte Berliner Kollektive haben wir eingeladen, ihre Arbeit auf dem Gelände der Kulturbrauerei, über das Radio und im digitalen Raum zu präsentieren. Geprägt wird das Festival durch eine Kooperation mit dem RambaZamba Theater: Das Studio 21 wird als zweites Festival in unser Programm verwoben. Ein Schwerpunkt sind afrodiasporische Narrative, die sich sowohl in Konzerten Gehör verschaffen, als auch auf Panels diskutiert und filmisch präsentiert werden. Die aus vergangenen Jahren bereits bekannte Çaystube wird zur installativen Außenbühne, einem performativen Erfahrungsraum. Verschiedene Digital Works internationaler Künstler:innen, die nicht anreisen konnten, umrahmen das Festival und werden auch als Supercut der Perspektiven im Kino in der Kulturbrauerei zu sehen sein. Selbstverständlich wird vieles in diesem Jahr anders sein als zuvor, auch intimer. Wir müssen Wege finden, wie wir wieder zusammenkommen können und wie die Kultur ihre Funktion im gesellschaftlichen Diskurs zurückerlangt. Wir freuen uns, dass ihr daran teilnehmt – und dass uns die Künstler:innen den Weg weisen werden. Das Pop-Kultur-Team 6 Foreword When we started planning Pop-Kultur 2021, there was so much uncertainty. The world had changed and nothing seemed stable anymore. But at least one thing was clear to us. After last year’s online edition, we wanted to organise a festival with live performances again. We tried to develop a concept with greatly reduced indoor capacities, small outdoor stages and locally-oriented booking. It was important to us, on the one hand, not to lose major parts of our programme due to possible entry restrictions, and on the other, to send a much-needed signal of solidarity with the strong involvement of local and regional artists. We have also reinvented ourselves from the inside. The new programme team – consisting of Yeşim Duman, Leyla Yenirce, Pamela Owusu-Brenyah and Christian Morin – started working together without ever having been in the same room at the same time in this context. Endless online conferences were the only way to exchange and develop curatorial ideas. This was coupled with having to face many newly-arising challenges. Despite these difficult underlying conditions, we managed to create the best edition of Pop-Kultur we could have imagined given the pandemic situation. Besides concerts, commissioned works, talks, workshops, films and installations, there are many other special features this year to discover. And live, real, in colour, in collective cooperation. We have invited six selected Berlin collectives to present their work on the grounds of the Kulturbrauerei, via radio and online. The festival is also shaped by a cooperation with RambaZamba Theater: Studio 21 will be woven into our programme as a second festival. One focus is on Afro-diasporic narratives, which will be heard in concerts as well as discussed on panels and presented on film. The Çaystube, familiar from previous years, will serve as an outdoor installation stage, a performative experiential space. Various digital works by international artists who were unable to attend will round out the festival, which will also be screened as a supercut of perspectives in the cinema of the Kulturbrauerei. Of course, many things will be different this year, and more intimate. We have to find ways to come together again and show how culture can regain its role in social discourse. As a songwriter in 2020, my work varies from being in the same physical room using digital communication with collaborators from different cultures and sometimes even without ever meeting face to face with the person I'm making music with. In this thesis I explore some of the opportunities and challenges of this process and shine a light on tendencies and trends in the field. As an autoethnographic research project, this thesis offers an insight into the songwriting process and continuous development of techniques by myself as a songwriter in the digital age, working both commercially and artistically with international partners across the world. The thesis will aim to supplement knowledge on current working methods in songwriting and will hopefully shine a light on how one may improve as a songwriter and topliner in the international market.     VIRAL ART Exhibition Guide VIRAL ART is an exhibition focusing on this last year and the universal pandemic (COVID-19) which has affected many different aspects of life, one of which is evident in the artistic world. COVID-19 has forced many artists to open up to new avenues of expression in many different disciplines; visual art, music, performing arts, photography, fashion, and literature. Some of the main goals for our exhibition are to bring light to how the pandemic has affected all corners of life, especially in regard to artistic capability/expression, and further, illustrate how certain artists captured the essence and experience of COVID-19. Introduction by Taylor Weaver I wanted to start by saying how grateful I am to have been able to lead this exhibition project with the help of Mirea Suarez. I am so proud of each and every one of the girls and hope you can see how hard they have all worked to make this possible. So welcome to our exhibition which we have titled Viral Art! The teams came from Australia, Sweden, Belgium, The UK, France, Germany, Switzerland and The Netherlands. The result: 13 super diverse songs that the international audience could listen to and vote for online for one whole month. A panel of international leading AI experts evaluated the songs on AI level. Besides the 13 songs and voting, the website also offered: information about all the teams and the ways they used AI to create their songs; a 5-part YouTube series in which one of the Dutch teams is followed in their process of creating their song; interviews with leading international artists making use of AI in their creative work.
