Otorohanga toddler Tayler Gailey could soon be on her way for potentially life-saving treatment in Mexico, thanks to the generosity of supporters. Tayler, who has relatives in Te Awamutu, has a rare and inoperable brain tumour and radiation therapy has not stopped the aggressive cancer growing on her brain stem. In a last ditch effort to help their daughter, her parents Lisa and Garth Gailey, along with Westpac Bank staff in Te Kuiti and Otorohanga

launched a fundraising appeal 8428379AA four weeks ago to send her to a clinic in Mexico, which may cure the condition. The Hope4Cancer Institute in Tijuana provides an alterna- tive treatment called Salicinium therapy, which it claims can kill cancer cells by disrupting a key enzyme. And the Gailey family needs $60,000 to get there. Thankfully, since the appeal’s launch they are past halfway — with over $30,000 already raised. The target took a major boost last week when a gener- ous benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous donated $20,000 to Tayler’s fund. A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE Only one way to bridge the spiritual divide

By IAN ROBSON of Te Awamutu Baptist Church

A bridge is a structure built over an obstacle to a desired destination. There are all kinds of bridges in this World, but the most significant one crosses a chasm unlike anything else in existence. Jesus referred to this bridge when He said “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by me” (John 14:6). The Bible says that we all fall short of righteousness (Romans 3:23) God is absolutely holy – His eyes can not look upon any impurity at all. As a result, sin has created a gulf between mankind and God (Isaiah 59:2), which none of us in our human strength is able to cross through. While people make all kinds of attempts to span the divide, Jesus is clear that only one thing works: the Cross. So, what stands in the way of our being able to reach God in our own power? – sin. The Bible tells us that sin blinds our eyes to the truth and corrupts our life. Our Father knows that rebellion separates us from Him and causes us to miss out on His plan and blessing for our life. The Lord created man in order to express His unconditional love, so anything that pulls us away from Him saddens Him deeply. God loves sinners but hates sin because He knows the consequences of our disobedience. Do you want to get across the chasm? The Bible teaches us that we are saved by God’s grace, that is, his unconditional love toward us was demon- strated at the cross (Ephesians 2:8). There is no way across the divide except for repentance, and faith in Him. The way to God is not a toll bridge – we can not work our way across. It is not a drawbridge where man does his part and God does his part. The trip across is free because the price has already been paid through Jesus giving his life on the cross. Do you want to experience true intimacy with God? Do you want to receive his full blessing in your life? Get on the bridge that leads to him, trust Jesus as your personal Savour and receive him as your Lord and Master. Ten years ago the voyage records of past Spirit of New Zealand and Spirit of Adventure sailings were destroyed in a devastating flood. A campaign is now underway to reconnect the Spirit of Adventure Trust with as many former voyagers as possible. The ‘lost alumni’ campaign is aimed at anyone who has sailed on the Spirit of New Zealand or Spirit of Adventure, and aims to capture details and photographs from past sailings, as well as find people interested in supporting the Trust. As part of that campaign, the Trust’s principle corporate partner Hyundai Motors has launched a Facebook application www.facebook.com/ HyundaiNZ for registrations.
