The Charta Diversity Day 03

A diverse and inclusive workplace makes us work better together. Working in such a way offers continued individual growth and collective growth through the vast amount of opportunities we get to learn from our differences. May 26th 2020 will mark Germany’s eight year celebration of diversity day. The original diversity day took place on June 11th, 2013 via the non profit initiative of Charta der Vielfalt association. In 2011 the Charta officially ran as a non-profit through the backing of Dr. Angela Merkel. The initial creation of the Charta came about in 2006 via four companies supported by the Commission for the Federal Government for Migration, State Minister (Annette Widmann-Mauz), Refugees and Integration. The goal of the Charta der Vielfalt is to foster diversity in the workplace. In which all people are valued regardless of their ethnicity, gender, religion, identity, sexual orientation, age, and physical ability in which people work together free of biases. Year by year there has been a steady increase in the number of companies and employees being added yearly. They focus on diversity via an international lens to compliment our international working demographics. Given the limitations of being able to come together in person during the pandemic we found a solution in which we can still be together virtually. Given these new circumstances, we have extended the activities the last over the span of the next several weeks so that employees have more time to engage in the various activities without the time pressure to take part in everything in one day. This is an excellent opportunity to implement D&I through a wider spectrum beyond daily work tasks. Below you will find an attached pdf which shows what we have to offer for the day itself and other various tasks that you can take part in later throughout the weeks to come. There is also room to suggest more, it allows us to implement more topics for the future. Tell us about you before coming to Zalando 07 Before coming to Zalando I was working as a psycho-social research projects researcher focused on my work post-colonialism, colonialism, trauma, amnesia, the body, innocence, intersectionality, race, gender, and more recently religion. It may seem like a lot at once, but these themes overlap heavily thus the focus on using an intersectional approach in my research. I focused mainly on the Caribbean as my basis of linking historic fragments between South America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East via the scope of the imperial west (USA &Europe). I analyse the mind body split that is often fostered in the Western narrative and possible means of suturing. It is a mix of personal analysis (using my dance/performance background) as an applied holistic means the suture the gap between the corporal and cognitive body. I was invited to dance and choreograph a piece based on my research, it was excellent and exciting. Aside from the research aspect, I spoke further on my work at various academic conferences, lectures, podcasts, talks, and panels. One funny fact you might come to know about me is my online presence is terrible. I like the personal interactions and that comes with time. Ironically, I am social, open, engaged, and approachable. However, I am more interested in the process as a whole, the discovering, learning, collaborations, creation, and all that fun behind the scenes work; being present. Yet, I am slowly playing with having a larger social footprint, as I see my work needs that. When I am not doing that I focus on counseling, healing, and arts within my work. The whole story comes together as you get to know me. One thing is clear, you can easily see why D&I is dear to my passion and work; it is as vast, interconnected, holistic scope of social matters that Tips before starting 08 Since we only have diversity day for one day these were the activities that were selected as most feasible to get us started on the extended diversity day activities listed above. All the activities get us to see the larger scope of what diversity means. It is in everything and that’s why having an intersectional scope of diversity works. The activities selected for diversity and the extended diversity were created by various applied methods of engagement and to get use engaged across various departments. We work better together when we understand what our differences bring. Before taking part in diversity consider the following:

What inspired you to learn about D&I? What diversity means to you? Why did you choose to engage the activities? How do you feel about diversity after taking part in the activities? What are you hoping to learn and see more of? When it is done, share what you learned, what you liked and didn’t like. Simply come with an open mind and willingness to try new things; it is important that you do try rather than watch from afar.
