The City of Somerville held it’s wall breaking ceremony on this past Monday at the old incinerator and former transfer station on Linwood Street. “We may be gathering to mark the tearing down of the transfer station, but we are celebrating the building of a new future for Brickbottom and Inner- Belt,” said Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone. “In creating SomerVision, the city’s 20-Year Comprehensive Plan, community members designated Brickbottom/ InnerBelt as a transformative area targeted for mixed-use, transit-oriented redevelopment that will provide an economic engine for our city. And with the transfer station coming down, the Green Line Extensioncoming in, and Elect the grounding of McGrath under review, we are well on our way. Reclaim- ing this once and future thriving neighborhood will help us reach our shared SomerVision goals of creating 30,000 new jobs, new and affordable housing, and new commercial tax revenues to fund our services and schools.” Sean Fitzgerald Waste Management’ trash transfer station operated out of the location until it was closed this past summer as part of the agreement with the city. “We have an exceptional opportunity here to leverage two significant in- frastructure projects—the Green Line Extension and the grounding of Alderman-at-Large McGrath—to both revitalize this area as well as create new and vital links between our neighborhoods and also to our neighbors in Cambridge and Boston as well,” said Ward 2 Alderman Maryann Heuston. “I look forward to seeing a new, welcoming, flourishing neighborhood sprout from this land- scape and to working with the community to make sure its transformation Somerville brings real value both to Ward 2 and our city as a whole,” S&R Corporation Demolition out of Lowell is contracted to knock down part of the structure and will begin it’s first phase of the demolition on Monday

to even teach a course of that magnitude that they billed the city for. We also heard that the guy on the other end of the scam, a former state trooper, at the MBTA who was supposedly a family member of the Somerville halfwit DPW instructor who passed all the CDL students with flying colors even though the instructor was allegedly a supposed sham and knowingly not certified? “But Dead men tell no tales,” well at least that’s what they say because here’s the other problem that’s luarking out there right now. The former trooper/family member in question has recently passed away. So that means no depositions inquiries for him will be scheduled, we are guessing or will there be some sort of criminal investigation on the state level regarding this problem? What is the “LIABILITY FACTOR,” the magic words of the day? These guys who taught the class weren’t CDL Certified so does that mean the students that they taught are not properly licensed today as a result of not being what it was supposed to be? Hmmmm? Does this sound a little familiar just like the tainted evidence case at the Massachusetts Crime lab scandal that the chemist Annie Dookhan falsified all the evidence as many as 34,000 criminal cases that wasn’t so long ago are now being dismissed? This could possible turn into a legal turmoil if one of those CDL students ever have a truck accident especially a fatal one? We hope that it doesn’t escalate to that but again who knows? ______We heard that the DPW now has someone standing guard over at the DPW time clock to make sure that everybody punches in and out at the right time when they are supposed to. Precautions never hurt anybody, well at least that’s what they say? It’s just too bad that allegedly one bad apple is causing all this mess at the DPW Garage! We have a lot of fantastic men and women who work down at the Somerville DPW who don’t like this anymore than we all do and they don’t deserve to be put under a microscope at all with this entire hype and polygraph test baloney etc.. because of one or two idiots. ______Here’s another rumor that’s circulating around the Ville that we heard has started from the top dog down at the Fire Marshal’s office and is believed to be leading investigators and criminal analyst and others thinking that the string of arson fires that were happening in the Ville over the past two months were allegedly somehow connected to a Cavalia Horse Show employee that is rumored to have to been starting those fires around the city. Some are saying that the fires all started at about the same time period when the horse show came to town and the fires stopped when the show left town. Another reason that some are believing this might be true is because we heard that the same type of suspicious fires have started where the show’s big white top has recently driven it’s stakes into the ground after they left Somerville and arrived at their new venue in Washington? We just hope that Somerville has seen the last of any fires! ______

THE HOUSE AND SENATE: Beacon Hill Roll Call records the votes of local senators on two roll calls from the week of Octo- ber 21-25. There were no roll calls in the House last week.

15-DAY LEAVE FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS (S 1892) Denice Provost Senate approved 35-0, and sent to the House a bill that would require employers with 50 or more employees to allow workers Rep who are victims of domestic violence, stalking or sexual assault to take a paid or unpaid annual 15-day leave of absence to ad- D Somerville dress court, housing, health and other issues arising from the incident. Another key provision would prohibit the use of an “ac- State House cord and satisfaction” agreement in domestic violence cases. These agreements allow the courts to dismiss a domestic violence Room 473B charge over the prosecutor’s objection, if the victim acknowledges in writing that he or she has signed an out-of-court private Boston, MA 02133 agreement with the offender. Phone: 617-722-2263 Supporters said it is time to ensure that victims don’t have to choose between dealing with problems from their assault and losing their jobs because of excess absences. They noted that Massachusetts is the only state that still allows “accord and satis- faction” agreements and argued banning these would protect victims from being victimized again by being coerced into signing one.

MAKE MATERNITY LEAVE GENDER NEUTRAL (S 685) Senate 35-0, approved and sent to the House a bill that would change the state’s female-only maternity leave law to a gender- neutral one. The law gives parents of a newborn or adopted child eight weeks off, with or without pay at the discretion of the employer, and the right to return to their job after that period. Carl Sciortino Supporters said this would bring this law into the current century. They noted it is outrageous that coverage is currently re- Rep served for women. POSSIBLE BAY STATE HOSTING OF 2024 OLYMPICS (S 1840) - The House and Senate approved and sent to Gov. Deval Patrick a measure creating an 11-member commission to study the feasibility of Massachusetts hosting the Summer Olympic Games in 2024. Supporters say this is a great opportunity that should be explored because it would shine a spotlight on Massa- chusetts and pump hundreds of million of dollars into the economy. Opponents say this is a misguided effort that will result in a gigantic boondoggle costing taxpayers millions of dollars.

REGULATE INTERPRETERS (S 163) - The Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure Committee held a hearing on a bill requiring all persons providing interpreting or oral transliterating services for the deaf be licensed by Massachusetts Com- mission for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing. Supporters say this important service is currently unregulated and argued the bill will help ensure that interpreters are qualified. Boston, MA 02133 PARENTS LIABLE FOR BULLYING BY THEIR CHILDREN (S 635) - The Judiciary Committee’s agenda included a bill that Phone: 617-722-2380 would make parents of a minor over seven but under 18 year of age civilly liable for paying up to $5,000 for damages resulting Fax: 617-626-0668 from their child’s bullying of someone. “With no regard for the consequences, the defendant ensured that samples would test positive for controlled substances thus eviscerating both the integrity of the lab’s internal testing processes, and the ... fact-finding process that was a jury’s to perform.” Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office statement recommending five to seven years in prison for Annie Dookhan, the chemist who is accused of mishandling drug samples and putting in question up to 40,000 drug conviction cases. ”The damage (Dookhan) has done in this state is tremendous, and five years in jail does not do justice. Somerville’s Walnut Street Center Appreciation Luncheon

By William Tauro

Management of the Walnut Street Center showed their appreciation to its “Gala Event Committee” board members by treating them to a luncheon at the Charles River Golf Course in Newton on Friday. The Gala Committee that is chaired and spearheaded by Former Somerville Mayor Gene Brune and Somerville Alderman-at-Large Jack Connolly helped raise over $35,000 for the Walnut Street Center with this year’s Gala back in September. The event was held at the Somerville Holiday Inn with over two hundred attendees. Walnut Street Center is a nonprofit, human service agency located in Somerville, Arlington and Cambridge, MA that provides residential, day and individual/fam- ily support services to over 200 adults with developmental disabilities. Walnut Street Center was started in 1970 by a group of parents that wanted to provide a better way of life for their children and other persons with developmental disabilities. Walnut Street Center’s mission is to empower adults who have developmental disabilities to make meaningful life choices. Somerville Fire Department’s New Tower Truck Soon To Hit The Streets

By William Tauro

When Was The Last Time That You Used A The City of Somerville has purchased a brand-new tower-truck for it’s fire department. Phone Booth? The truck is state-of-the-art and has all the modern safety features to help firefighters battle fires and keeping them safe. When’s the last time you used a phone booth? As pay phones become less and less common the booths the housed them have been left behind in many cities. Not wanting to waste an opportunity to display art, the Somerville Arts Council and the Nave Gallery teamed up to recruit artists who transformed abandoned phone booths into public art. This Sunday, we’re celebrating the opening The Phone Art Box Project, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a tour of the first five completed phone art boxes. Follow Mayor Curtatone from box to box for mini-openings with refreshments at each box, or visit any box during the two-hour event at your leisure. The Somerville News Weekly October 29, 2013 23
