Cuties Teams up with Nick Jonas, Demi Lovato and After- School All-Stars - Advertisement - Cuties teams up with Nick Jonas, Demi Lovato and After- School All-Stars December 19, 2017 Cuties, the brand that pioneered California-grown mandarins, teamed up with After-School All-Stars, a leading national provider of daily, comprehensive tuition-free academic, fitness and enrichment programs for underserved families after-school, to deliver some California sunshine to kids enrolled in the program at Bowman Ashe/Doolin K-8 Academy in south Florida. Y100 DJ Frankie P and students enrolled in After-School All-Stars at Bowman Ashe-Doolin point to their favorite artists' signatures on 1 / 2 the Cuties Buddy Bench. The Buddy Bench was signed by Nick Jonas, Halsey, Logic, Demi Lovato and others at the Y100 Jingle Ball in Miami on Sunday. Cuties joined iHeart Media’s Jingle Ball concert tour at the BB&T Center Sunday in Miami to introduce the concert series’ first ever Cuties correspondents, Ayden and Ryan Soria, two brothers from Los Angeles. Ryan and Ayden were selected after submitting a video about what kindness means to them through Cuties’ 100 Days of Sunshine contest promoted during "ON" with Mario Lopez and Ryan Seacrest’s "AT Top 40." During the concert, Ryan and Ayden asked artists and celebrities from the popular tour to sign a custom-designed Buddy Bench. Buddy Benches were developed by an elementary student in Pennsylvania who wanted to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the playground. Students sit on the bench to signal to classmates that they’re looking for a friend to talk to or play with. Artists at the Jingle Ball tour, including Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, Charlie Puth, Halsey and Logic signed the bench and added personal messages of encouragement to After-School All-Star students. “Cuties is on a mission to spread positivity and sunshine during California Cuties season, from November through April,” said Howard Nager, vice president of marketing and business development at Sun Pacific, the grower and shipper of Cuties. “We’re thrilled that together with iHeart Radio and After-School All-Stars, we’ll be able to give All-Star students at Bowman Ashe/Doolin a very special reminder to share sweetness all year long with our Cuties Buddy Bench and pledge to provide healthy snacks to all the students enrolled in ASAS programs in South Florida.” Cuties and Y100 DJ Frankie P donated the Buddy Bench on Monday at Bowman Ashe/Doolin, one of 400 After-School All-Star school sites nationwide. Cuties also announced it would donate a season’s worth of fruit to the 2,000 students enrolled in the program locally. I attended a Jonas Brothers concert last August and the energy of fans was mind- boggling. Bombarded with this teeny-bop fanaticism, my mind revisited a time when boy bands sent my hormones reeling. My heart spun back to my first concert ten summers ago starring the oh-so-dreamy Backstreet Boys. I was ten, and Nick Carter was a few years older. Just a few. But he was beautiful. His beach-blonde hair had a tendency to look perfectly disheveled and his bright blue eyes had Cupid sending arrows through my heart. Among Nick’s many big-screen moments that night, there was one on-camera appearance that I remember vividly: singing “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and dancing with slight indecency, he had me love struck. The Backstreet Boys engendered in me the same magical and feverish obsession that defines Jonas Brothers fans. As is characteristic of boy band worship, fans live and breathe anything and everything that emanates J-O-N-A-S. But where do these obsessive-compulsive personalities come from? On the surface, girls are attracted to the brothers’ image as a band: drool-worthy good looks, a unique, punk-infused-prep style, and an energetic stage presence. Lured by these dazzling visuals, fans deem the trio rock n’ roll eye-candy. “They’re perfect, everything about them,” raves my fourteen year old sister. But Nick also has diabetes, a serious health condition that needs daily attention. Now 15, Nick first got sick while on tour in November 2005. He was losing weight, acting moody and feeling thirsty all the time. A blood test showed that he had diabetes and he spent several days in the hospital. Though he is healthy and feeling great now, back then he worried he might die. “I had an emotional breakdown since I really had no idea what diabetes was all about. I wondered, ‘why me?’ Then I asked myself, ‘why not me?’ and realized that I might be able to help other kids with diabetes.” In 2007, the Jonas Brothers performed at a Diabetes Research Institute fundraiser in New York City. During the show, Nick asked audience members to raise their hands if they had diabetes. Then he raised his hand, too, revealing for the first time publicly that he has type 1 diabetes.
