Exploring the historic town of Ludlow & The Shropshire Hills Tour guide: Martin About your guide: Martin has over 28 years of experience as a tour guide in Shropshire. Start We travel south-west from Shrewsbury passing close to the Stiperstones hill range where the largest Lead mine in Europe in Victorian times was located. Many remains of buildings can be seen amongst this moorland scenery. We emerge from the Hope Valley into typical South Shropshire Agricultural land before re-joining the A49 and making our way to the hilltop medieval town of Ludlow, which was famously described by John Betjeman as “the loveliest town in England “. Known as the gastronomic centre of Shropshire this picturesque town has over 500 listed buildings. We stop here for just over 2 hours free time. In the afternoon there is a choice of two routes: - Option 3a/. We travel along the Shropshire/ Herefordshire/ Welsh borders, through wonderfully unspoilt countryside. With no large towns and villages called Clungunford, Leintwardine and Brampton Bryan and views varying from pastureland to hilly valleys, this is a tour to sit back and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the area. On the final part we drive along the ridge of the limestone Wenlock Edge to Much Wenlock before making our way back to Shrewsbury. Option 3b/. We drive into the Clee Hills which contain the highest and 3rd highest peaks in Shropshire with spectacular views when Great Malvern to Pembrokeshire can be seen on a clear day. We now travel through countryside which has remained largely unchanged since medieval times, passing through the area ‘capital’, Cleobury Mortimer before finally visiting the ancient market town of Much Wenlock before returning to Shrewsbury. Throughout your tour, Martin will provide live commentary of the incredible sights and Shropshire’s unique history. Interested in this tour? Contact us! [email protected] .
