Fausti 10.1126/sciadv.1500558 Recent shifts in agricultural practices have resulted in altered pesticide use patterns, land use intensification, and land- scape simplification, all of which threaten biodiversity in and near farms. Pests are major challenges to food security, and responses to pests can represent unintended socioeconomic and environmental costs. Characteristics of the ec- ological community influence pest populations, but the nature of these interactions remains poorly understood within realistic community complexities and on operating farms. We examine how species diversity and the topology of linkages in species’ abundances affect pest abundance on maize farms across the Northern Great Plains. -

The western bean cutworm, Striacosta albicosta (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a native North American pest that feeds mainly on corn and dry beans. The historical geographic range of the western bean cutworm covered the western Great Plains states, including Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Since 1999, the geographic range of the western bean cutworm has rapidly expanded eastward across the United States Corn Belt, causing significant and economic damage to corn and dry beans in parts of this region. This expansion has led to a resurgence of interest in this pest, particularly in areas where it has most recently caused damage. We summarize the ecology and biology of western bean cutworm and discuss options for scouting and management, with an emphasis in the expanded geographical range. Indiana Register NATURAL RESOURCES COMMISSION Information Bulletin #2 (Eighth Amendment) December 1, 2017 SUBJECT: Roster of Indiana Animals, Insects, and Plants that are Extirpated, Endangered, Threatened, or Rare (also described as Special Concern). I. HISTORY The initial roster was published February 1, 1992 (15 IR 848), republished April 1, 1991 (15 IR 1312); and subsequently amended to include additional species and published on February 1, 2005 (28 IR 1581). Since 2005, revisions have been made to several of the endangered species lists. The term "special concern" replaced the references to "rare" as it relates to wild animals and is expanded to include species in a legal status transition. Federal funding is available for species that are endangered or of special concern. In the fourth amendment, posted at 20070815-IR-312070469NRA on August 15, 2007, "rare", "threatened", and "extirpated" classifications for insect species were retained. Classification definitions were added for vascular plant species. In this document, species are reclassified and scientific names were modified. In the fifth amendment, posted at 20120125-IR-312120047NRA on January 25, 2012, the listing for endangered reptiles and amphibians was modified. Notable was removal of the American bald eagle from the endangered species list. Some species removed from the endangered list were redesignated as "special concern". Amendments were made to use scientific names that are consistent with those for species of animals listed in 312 IAC 9. In the sixth amendment, posted at 20140129-IR-312140023NRA on January 29, 2014, the listing for endangered birds, mollusks, insects, and vascular plants was modified. Notable was the removal of the peregrine falcon from the endangered species list. -

It has expanded its distribution from the western Great Plains of the United States to the Great Lakes region in the United States and Canada. There has been limited research on the baseline biological aspects of this insect under controlled conditions. The objective of this study was to detail the biological parameters of S. albicosta feeding on an artificial diet under laboratory conditions. Overall survival from neonate to adult at 26.6 ± 1°C was 36.72% and the total developmental time was approximately 110 d. Survival of the egg, larval, prepupal, and pupal stages were 75.71, 98.50, 51.78, and 95.10%, respectively. Average duration of the egg, larval, prepupal, and pupal stages was 4.64, 28.20, 41.50, and 25.91 d, respectively. During the larval stage, 92.50% of larvae developed through seven instars and the remaining through six instars. -

By Megan M. Chludzinski The western bean cutworm (Striacosta albicosta, Smith) is a native pest of dry beans and corn in western North America, and since 2000, has expanded its range eastward to include Michigan. It was discovered in the state in 2006, and has been reported as a pest of Michigan dry beans and corn since then. Michigan is the second largest producer of dry beans in the United States, and western bean cutworm was a new threat to this industry. Our overall objective was to study western bean cutworm biology and control to develop management recommendations for Michigan dry bean growers. Moth flight was monitored, and range expansion was tracked, through a pheromone trap network from 2006 – 2012. In central Michigan, pheromone traps near dry beans caught significantly more moths than traps near corn. Health of egg masses decreased due to possible predation, fungal pathogens, and proved parasitism. Western bean cutworm larvae have the potential survive on alternate host plants, many of which are produced in Michigan’s diverse agriculture. Larvae are difficult to scout for in dry beans because they remain on the ground during the day. Prepupae are found overwintering as deep as 38 cm in the soil. -
