From the Rectory 3.

In the Church calendar, June sees the end of Eastertide, with The Day of Pentecost on 9th; followed by Trinity Sunday on 16th; and then begins the long series of Sundays after Trinity. There will still be special Sundays in certain places – as Limpenhoe celebrates its Patron Saint Botolph on 16th, or Reedham St. John the Baptist on 23rd, but generally we will be in what we now call Ordinary Time.

We all like special occasions; and as Christians we have plenty of special things to celebrate – like the gift of the Holy Spirit, poured out at Pentecost. Increasingly, it seems that we have to stage special events if we are to get anybody, other than the committed few, to come to church! Beyond the church, special events abound, partly to meet the appetite of our culture for endless novelty, partly as multiple organisations and causes vie for our attention – even if it’s only for a minute, or a day, or a week. I’ve just come back from delivering envelopes for Christian Aid Week – essential fundraising for a worthwhile charity. Radio is running a special series of features for Mental Health Awareness Week – an oft-neglected aspect of healthcare. But today they have told me that it’s also Dying Matters Week – a subject we don’t talk about enough. If I go online I learn that it is, amongst other things, Food Allergy and Coeliac UK’s Awareness Weeks, National Vegetarian Week and the beginning of Foster Care Fortnight. In the Church, Sunday was Lulea Sunday, when we are asked to pray for our link Diocese in Sweden; and national Vocations Sunday; I was also mindful that for many children and young people and their parents and teachers, this week stands out as the beginning of exams. If it’s all too much (which it is) maybe I could seek comfort in National Doughnut Week?

At the Reformation, a lot of the saints’ days and other special occasions were stripped out of the calendar; and simple services of Morning and Evening Prayer and Holy Communion published in the Book of Common Prayer, to provide, with minimal variation, for every day of the year. Archbishop Cranmer maybe went too far; but there is something valuable in that stripped-down daily rhythm and discipline. Daily Prayer is now mostly left to the clergy; but many Christians practise a helpful daily quiet time, or follow a daily podcast. There are still religious communities maintaining a daily cycle of prayer, work, and refreshment. All this affirms that God – and love, truth and joy – are to be found in the warp and weft of ordinary life: we don’t have to go endlessly looking in special times or places. Indeed, excessive novelty is a potential distraction.

So I, for one, will be welcoming the arrival of Ordinary Time. It’s good for my spiritual and mental health – certainly better than a doughnut!

In the love of God, Martin Greenland

Special Events coming up:- First Friday MP at Beighton (7th) will mark Thy Kingdom Come – the prayer initiative between Ascension and Pentecost.

Churchwardens will be sworn in at a service in Norwich Cathedral at 7.30pm 4. on Tuesday 11th. Also 7.30pm Thursday 13th June in Reedham Church: “Building Dementia Friendly Communities” with the Revd Gill Wells: an open invitation from Deanery Synod. Patronal Holy Communion with the music of Taize at Limpenhoe, 6pm on 16th. Patronal Holy Communion with Canon Peter Doll at Reedham on 23rd. The Acle & Bure to Yare Benefice Choir will be singing Evensong at Norwich Cathedral on Sunday 30th June.

Parish Registers Funerals We commend to God:- Eva Margaret Dingle, aged 90, at Great Yarmouth Crematorium on 17th April

Desmond Henry Sharman (Des), aged 93, of Acle. at Halvergate on 17th May.

Baptism Amelia Hope-Anne Hodson at Acle on 19th May.

Reedham Ringers The Reedham bells have had a busy few weeks. We tolled the tenor at 7pm on Maundy Thursday as part of the nationwide expression of solidarity with the French people following the fire at Notre Dame. Having suffered a church fire ourselves in the not so distant past, I think it is something that we can identify with. On 23rd April we rang rounds for St George’s Day, and sadly included diminishing rounds, where the bells “drop out” one by one until only the heaviest bell, the tenor is left ringing alone. This pattern is traditionally rung as a form of mourning and was in recognition of the victims of the Sri Lankan bombing on Easter Day. A visiting band rang a full peal on 27th April – 5040 changes, the marathon of bellringing with uninterrupted ringing for nearly 3 hours, with no 2 rows of bells being repeated. On 28th April, other visitors rang before Sunday service with members of the regular band, and on 1st May we rang at 9am to celebrate May Day. The children at Reedham Primary School joined in, with every child dinging the school bell as they walked into lessons. It was our attempt at synchronised ringing. We hope that you are still enjoying our contribution to the soundscape of the village and if you want to join us, please contact me. We can arrange training, or if you can already handle a bell we practice on Monday afternoons. Mary Jones 01493 701388 Acle Church Path Work on relocating the heating boiler at Acle St. Edmund is expected to begin at the end of May and to continue into July. During this time the path that runs from the south porch, past the tower and down to the Church Hall will be closed. Please use the alternative route via the tarmac Rectory Drive. Thank you for your patience during this time: the project will give us a more efficient boiler, a better-draining path and a less unsightly area alongside the porch.

Reedham and District WI 15. We met, as usual, on the first Tuesday of the month at Reedham Village Hall. The meeting was devoted to discussing the resolutions that are to be carried forward to the National Federation of WIs later this year. The WI is not just a social group for ladies who make jam and cakes and enjoy singing Jerusalem. It has a fine history of campaigning on issues that particularly affect women and their families. In 2017 local groups were involved in the “Food matters” campaign, which investigated food waste, both at the home and industry level, and the “End plastic soup” campaign which called on government and industry to limit the release of plastic fibres into the environment. Both issues have since been taken up by other campaigners and are much in the media at present. In 2018 our focus was on “Make time for mental health” and the WI called on all members to take action to make it as acceptable to talk about mental health as it is about physical health. The 2 motions under discussion for 2019 are “Don’t fear the smear” – how can WI members help to encourage women, particularly younger women, to attend routine cervical cancer screening checks? And “The decline in local bus services”. We talked so much that there was no time left to play the board games that we had planned. Perhaps another time. Next month (Tue. 4th June at 7.30pm) we will be listening to a talk about “The Summer garden”. All local women are invited to join us and to see what the WI has to offer them. You might be surprised. Mary Jones www.thewi.org.uk

Reedham Churchyard Maintenance Day We will be having a clear up at the churchyard on Wed. July 3rd, starting at 11am. Bring a sandwich and we can make tea/coffee at lunch time. If as many as possible of us can just put in a few hours labour, we will be able to continue keeping the area looking as beautiful as it is at the moment. No experience needed. Just bring some hand tools if you have them or, if not, just bring your enthusiasm. It is usually a very friendly and relaxed session. We may even have a bonfire! Please let me know if you intend to come, so that I can inform you if we have to cancel because of bad weather. Mary Jones 01493 701388

REEDHAM PERMISSIVE FOOT PATH - CURRENT STATUS The Landowner and Reedham Parish Council have worked formally and collaboratively since 15th March 2017 on reinstating this footpath, which runs for up to 140m from Station Road to the river flood-bank near Brit House. Some of the key developments that have taken place to date are: - Three village fund-raising walks; - Formal specification of the works by Norfolk County Council; - Approval of a bespoke Environment Agency licence; - £20,000 of funding secured from 4 sources to do the works; - Formal tendering for the works and selection of a contractor; - Clearing of vegetation and trees along the line of the footpath; - Dyke clearance and levelling of the footpath; 16. - A formal offer to purchase the land on which the footpath crosses.

This has been possible due to the commitment and goodwill of all involved. Many meetings have taken place. The Parish Council believes only one principal matter inhibits the signing-off of a legal agreement to implement the works. This relates to the supervision of Reedham Footpath No 1 (the flood-bank), which links the permissive path to the Reedham Ferry. The Landowner sees these two footpaths as being inter-linked and integral to each other, with both requiring supervision by the Parish Council, particularly in respect of dogs which are not on a lead. The Parish Council holds the view it can only accept supervisory responsibility for the permissive footpath. Discussion is still on-going to finalise the Agreement to enable work on reinstatement of the permissive footpath to commence. Reedham Parish Council 13.05.2019 REEDHAM PARISH COUNCIL Meeting held on Monday 13th May 2019 at Reedham Village Hall

There were 6 Councillors present, the Clerk, County Councillor Brian Iles and District Councillor Grant Nurden. 5 members of the public were in attendance. The Council meeting commenced at 7.30 pm. This was the Annual Parish Council meeting and for the elections on the 2nd of May only 6 Councillors stood so were elected unopposed. David Hale was elected as Chairman, and Diane Rushbrook was elected as Vice-Chairman. There are currently 5 vacancies. If you would be interesting in becoming a Parish Councillor, or would like more information, please contact the Clerk (details below). District Councillor Nurden reported that the elections on the 2nd May delivered 21 new members to District Council and therefore some changes to Committee memberships. The Chairman of the Village Hall Committee Chris Bradbury gave the following report: there were no issues with play equipment safety inspection for May. The April Cash Bingo jackpot was not won, the jackpot now stands at £300 in 60 numbers or less. The next film showing will be on Saturday 1st June at 7:30pm, “Mary Queen of Scots”. There will be another Fun Dog Show on the 9th June. Last year’s was very well supported so we hope for the same this year. The annual accounts were presented to the meeting. There was a surplus of £21,374 for the year. This was due to additional CIL receipts received and an underspend on the Permissive Path budget. £13,450 was spent on the refurbishment of the tennis courts at the Village Hall from the S106 money received from Broadland District Council from the Station Road development. Total receipts for the year were £34,847.10, plus £15,619 S106 and Parish Partnership money. Payments for the year were £13,472.83, plus £13,880 S106 money. The closing bank balance was £57,950.59 and the allotment account closing balance was £1,410.85. The full accounts can be viewed by contacting the Clerk. There were no planning applications received for consideration. A survey of the trees along the Woodland Walk has been undertaken to identify any that need urgent attention. No trees were identified as needing urgent work. There were 11 actions recommended to be completed within 12 months, and 2 actions that were desirable but not important. The Council will be getting a quote for the work. There is currently 1 half plot available at the allotments. Please contact the Clerk for 17. further details. The Allotment Committee is offering support and advice to those new to allotments. There were 3 recorded crimes in Reedham in February and March, and 2 in April. Thank you to all who turned up to the Neighbourhood Plan consultation event and gave us your thoughts and opinions. That information is being collated and will be used to identify the areas of interest and importance to take forward. If you would be interested in helping the Committee, in whatever capacity, please contact the Clerk. No further progress has been made during discussions with the landowner on the reopening the Permissive Path. Another meeting is planned for May.

All Saints Beighton Restoration & Improvements Appeal Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far this year. The Ceilidh on 2 March was a huge success and whilst the Easter Eggstravaganza and Car Treasure Hunt were disappointingly quiet, a good time was had by all who came along and additional funds were added to the appeal. The balance to-date being £4,156.

Our next scheduled fundraiser is the Beighton Summer Fete, Auction and Strawberry Teas - 15 June 2019 12:00 - 4:00pm. There will be a variety of games, stalls, tombola, face painting and other activities. Dancing Dimensions will give a display at 1:00pm. Entries for the Acle Academy Art Competition will be on display and the winner announced at the start of the Auction at 3:00pm, led by Ian Masters, former presenter for Look East. And of course, the famous Beighton church Strawberry Teas and refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon.

News on the grant applications: Allchurches Trust have generously awarded the PCC a grant of £5,250 which is wonderful! This leaves a shortfall of £25,577 with an application to the National Churches Trust for £20,000 still to be decided. As always, donations to the appeal would be very welcome. Cheques (made payable to PCC Beighton & Moulton St Mary) can be sent to Mrs K Ashcroft, 4 Ash Tree Road, Moulton St Mary, Norwich NR13 3NN or by bank transfer to sort code 30-99-97 account number 00603168.
