Letter from the Executive Director Dear TCR members and supporters,

In his most recent State of the Union address, President Obama declared that climate change is something we will have to account for to "our children's children."

While the President is taking important action on the greenhouse gases (GHGs) associated with major sources like power plants, we know it's also going to take leadership from business and others to address one of the biggest challenges of our time.

Some of these leaders are recognized in this Newsletter, and many more will be celebrated at the third annual Climate Leadership conference and awards, which take place 24-26 February in San Diego, . US EPA, The Climate Registry (TCR), the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions and the Association of Climate Change Officers will welcome and recognize some of our finest leaders in climate action, many of whom come from our very own TCR community. We hope you will join us at the event, which is an opportunity to share, collaborate, and network with fellow forward-thinking leaders from business, government, academia, and the non-profit community. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1116381051875&format=html&print=true 1/8 2/19/2014 January/February News from The Climate Registry This year's roster of speakers features luminaries from the public and private sectors, including many TCR members and Board directors:

General Verification Protocol v. 2.1 Public Comment Period There's just over a week left in the public comment period for The Climate Registry's draft General Verification Protocol (GVP) v. 2.1. We'll be accepting comments and critiques through Friday, February 21st . We'd love to hear from you, so please get your feedback in soon!

The proposed updates to the GVP include a new option for verification to be conducted to a limited level of assurance (The Registry's existing policy requires a reasonable level of assurance). These proposed updates provide Members with the flexibility to choose the level of assurance that best meets their needs and objectives. We welcome all Members and supporters to provide feedback, which we will then work to incorporate when finalizing the document in the coming months. Stay tuned for GVP 2.1's official release.

New Year, New Possibilities for Climate Consciousness Heading into the new year, are you feeling well informed on the state of greenhouse gas emissions in your country? National Geographic has recently published an interactive map with the ability to compare GHG emissions from 14 of the world's greatest economies, and Europe, in four ways: current emissions, emissions per capita, emissions intensity and cumulative emissions. Check out how your country compares on a global scale, historically and today.

We at The Registry are excited to see GHG emissions data put to such great use, as we well know that what gets measured, gets managed. GHG measurement can help ensure that your organization is setting realistic and attainable reduction targets, as well as identify areas where you can cut costs.

In keeping with new possibilities for the coming year, the Climate Disclosure Standards Board (CDSB) is working to establish up-to-date frameworks for integrating environmental information into mainstream corporate reports:

CDSB Reporting Framework Consultation open The Climate Disclosure Standards Board (CDSB) has released for public consultation Edition 2.0 of its Reporting Framework. This exposure draft expands the subject matter of the Framework to include reporting requirements on environmental information related to climate change. The exposure draft broadens the subject matter for reporting to include fossil fuels, water stewardship and forest commodities from the requirements outlined in CDSB's existing Reporting Framework (originally released in 2010).

CDSB is a global consortium of business and environmental NGOs, including The Climate Registry, working to promote and advocate disclosure of environmental information in mainstream corporate reports. CDSB works through collaboration and by identifying and coalescing around the most widely shared and tested reporting approaches that are emerging around the world. CDSB's Reporting Framework therefore adopts relevant principles from existing standards and practices with which business is already familiar.

Visit the CDSB website to download the exposure draft and respond to the consultation. The deadline for responses is May 19th, 2014. For further information: [email protected].
