It served to unite both military and civilian sectors in a time of total war. Annegret Fauser explains that music, “A medium both permeable and malleable was appropriated for numerous war related tasks.”1 When one realizes this principle, it becomes important to understand how music affected individual segments of American society. By examining women’s roles in the performance, dissemination, and consumption of music, this thesis attempts to position music as a tool in perpetuating the patriarchal gender relations in America during World War II.

International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 9 • No. 9 • September 2019 doi:10.30845/ijhss.v9n9p4 Biographies of Two African American Women in Religious Music: Clara Ward and Rosetta Tharpe Nana A. Amoah-Ramey Ph.D. Indiana University Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies College of Arts and Sciences Ballantine Hall 678 Bloomington IN, 47405, USA Abstract This paper‟s focus is to compare the lives, times and musical professions of two prominent African American women— Clara Ward and Rosetta Thorpe — in religious music. The study addresses the musical careers of both women and shows challenges that they worked hard to overcome, and how their relationship with other musicians and the public helped to steer their careers by making them important figures in African American gospel and religious music. In pursuing this objective, I relied on manuscripts, narratives, newspaper clippings, and published source materials. Results of the study points to commonalities or similarities between them. In particular, their lives go a long way to confirm the important contributions they made to religious music of their day and even today. Keywords: African American Gospel and Religious Music, Women, Gender, Liberation, Empowerment Overview This paper is structured as follows: It begins with a brief discussion of the historical background of gospel and sacred music. This is followed by an examination of the musical careers of Clara Ward and Rosetta Thorpe with particular attention to the challenges they faced and the strategies they employed to overcome such challenges; and by so doing becoming major figures performing this genre (gospel and sacred music) of music.

  • 1987 a Gift of Music Kennedy Center Honors
Alexandria Harmonizers 70th Anniversary Throwback Thursdays No. 21 – 1987 A Gift of Music Kennedy Center Honors Gala Performances In the year following our first international championship, we received many invitations to perform on shows around the area. This was a welcome surprise for the chapter and we would realize only later that it represented a predictable trend associated directly with that singular contest achievement. In late 1987 the Harmonizers were invited to participate in the Kennedy Center Honors Gala by Ray Charles, the Director of the Ray Charles Singers (not the soul singer), who was responsible for the vocal music used during the gala. Charles felt it would be appropriate to feature barbershop harmony in a tribute to Perry Como who was once a barber and had sung in a barbershop quartet. The plan developed for us to sing a pure barbershop song, “When You Were Sweet Sixteen,” and excerpts from several Como songs. We recorded the music on Friday for we would “lip-sync” during the performance. Walter Cronkite introduced us as the “Alexandria Harmonizers, Champion Barbershop Singers.” At this point, only Vaudeville appeared, after which large vertical panels behind them started moving, revealing one part of the chorus after another. As the final panel moved away, disclosing all 100 men, Nancy Reagan reportedly leaned forward with a big smile and said “Wow!” There were admiring comments as we went off stage: Rosemary Clooney: “I loved your sound”; Jimmy Stewart: “That was really great!”; Lucille Ball: “I adore your sound”; Angela Lansbury: “That was sensational! You really got ‘em.” At show’s end, the Harmonizers came singing down the aisles and joined the dramatic finale.

  • La Cultura Italiana
LA CULTURA ITALIANA PERRY COMO (1912-2001) This month’s essay looks at the life of another Italian-American popular music artist of the post-World War II era. Famous for his relaxed vocals, cardigan sweaters, and television Christ- mas specials, he was the charming Italian-American whose name became synonymous with “mellow” as he performed through seven decades, starting in the 1930s. His idol, Bing Crosby, once called him “the man who invented casual.” PIERINO RONALD “PERRY” COMO was born on May 12, 1912 in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. (This month would have been his 107th birthday, and, coincidentally, the 18th anniversary of his death). He was the seventh of 13 children and the first Ameri- can-born child of Pietro Como and Lucia Travaglini, who had both immigrated to the United States in 1910 from Palena, a small town in the Province of Chieti in the Abruzzo region of Italy. (He used to point out to people that he was the seventh son of a seventh son and that this was a good omen in Italian culture). Like many children of Italian immigrants (including my own father), Perry did not begin speaking English until he entered school, since the Comos spoke only Italian at home. Pietro had bought a second-hand organ for $3 soon after they had arrived in America. As soon as Perry was able to toddle, he would head to the instrument, pump the bellows, and play by ear music he had heard. Pietro worked in the Standard Tin Plate factory in Canonsburg, a small town in the coal-mining region that was located 18 miles southwest of Pittsburgh.

1 Solomon and Sinatra: The Song of Songs and Romance in the Church Robert Case A Sunday School Class Faith Presbyterian Church Tacoma, Washington 2016 Part 5 “The Good Life” The American Songbook has many songs dealing with singleness and the joys of marriage. A Tin Pan Alley favorite, "The Good Life" was written by Sacha Distel and Jack Reardon in 1962 and made popular in 1963 by the great Tony Bennett. He gained a #18 hit on the U.S. pop chart with it. "The Good Life" has become one of Mr. Bennett's staple songs, and was featured on four of his top-selling albums. He even named his 1998 autobiography, “The Good Life,” and that was after Bennett had taken the cure for his booze and cocaine addiction. The ironic lyrics speak of the so-called “good life” of singleness and freedom, when in fact, the singer tells us the “good life” is really being united with someone who loves you. A “good life” is life with a “good wife,” and you’d be wise to “kiss-off” singleness, Mr. Bennett tells us at the end of the song: “It's the good life, full of fun, seems to be the ideal. Yes, the good life, lets you hide all the sadness you feel. You won't really fall in love for you can't take the chance. So be honest with yourself, don't try to fake romance. Yes, the good life to be free and explore the unknown, like the heartaches, when you learn you must face them alone.

  • The Excitement Is Undeniable When One of the Great Figures in the Italian
The excitement is undeniable when one of the great figures in the Italian-American popular singing tradition journeys to Italy to make his first recording there. The event might be summarized by saying: Rome conquered Perry Como and Como conquered Rome. In May 1966, the popular recording and television star flew to the Italian capital for this historic session. It was not his first visit to the old country, for in 1958 he and his family had been privileged to have an audience with the late Pope Pius XII. In 1964, Perry had taken a large cast of his TV show to Rome for a Christmas show, which was partly photographed in Vatican City. But this trip was different. The destination was the famed new RCA Italiana Studios, the sprawling recording center about ten miles from Rome. It is there, in buildings that nearly rival film studios in size and grandeur, that many operas are recorded for RCA Victor. Como and his associates headed for the more intimate surroundings of Studio B. A large orchestra and chorus were assembled. Nick Perito conducted and arranged for a backing group of twenty violins, eight violas, eight cellos, six woodwinds, two mandolins, plus assorted other instruments and rhythm. A first-rate chorus of six women and eight men, called the Allesandro Allessandroni Singers, was called to work under the direction of the American chorus master Ray Charles. For Perry Como, May was an inspired and inspiring time to be in Rome and Naples. Italy was bursting with spring beauty and he drank in the sites and ate at every fabled restaurant his appetite could handle.
