A Weekly Report to the Great Falls City Commission A coalition promoting healthy lifestyles in Cascade County Facebook.com/GetFitGreatFalls www.GetFitGreatFalls.org October 10,2014 1 Greg Doyon, City Manager RECEIVED City of Great Falls P.O. Box 5021 ocr 1 ~ 201~ Great Falls, MT 59403 CITY 1\AA ~v..,."NAGER Dear Greg: Thank you for helping make our recent Come Out and Play event a great success. We have been overwhelmed by the positive comments from the children and parents who participated. Come Out and Play touched the lives of over 300 children in Great Falls and Central Montana. Youngsters and their families participated in 35 activities at the FREE event in Elks Riverside Park. The activities were designed to engage children and their families in simple games that can be played in their own backyards and neighborhood parks. Greg, thank you for hosting Come Out and Play in one of our fme city parks. It showcased the importance of our city facilities. Please also extend our gratitude to Patty Rearden for the help she provided in coordinating the marketing ofthis event. We also want to acknowledge the help provided by Erica McNamee from the Recreation Center. Thanks to the excellent publicity and volunteer help, our attendance at the Come Out and Play Event tripled this year. We are grateful for all the sponsors who supported and collaborated with us on the event; especially members of our Native American community, educators, health care providers, fitness instructors/advocates, and local coaches. During the event, each child was encouraged to sign a pledge ofhealth, naming three ways they would commit to a healthy life choice. With your help, Great Falls was able to bring internationally known Olympic soccer player, Abby Wambach, to our community. Throughout the weekend, Abby encouraged hundreds of children to live actively and make healthy food choices. She mingled through the crowd of children; spoke individually with each child; and willingly autographed their pledge forms. The youngsters and their parents were enamored with Abby's easygoing personality, enthusiasm, and support for our community's commitment to healthy living. An email message sent last week describes the success of Come Out and Play best: I haven't made it to a meeting in a long time but I wanted you all to know that you are in my thoughts often . I wanted to also say that several ofmy low income employees were able to partake in the recent event that you sponsored at Elks Riverside Park and they all were truly amazed at what a fabulous event that you hosted. I always share events and activities with them and our employee wellness program tries to participate when we can. So from the bottom ofour hearts thank you!- Audrey F. Additionally, Abby coached over 100 young athletes in three formally structured activities- Team Strong (Teambuilding); Elite Soccer Camp and Youth Soccer Camp. She utilized physical strengthening, soccer skill training and mental exercises to keep these athletes thinking and moving. Several of the children have aspirations to play at the collegiate level and were truly inspired by Abby's encouragement and her training regime. In fact, the Great Falls Bison Girls Soccer team captains independently ran Abby's routine during their regular practices the following week. Abby's positive influence certainly made a mark on these young athletes. Thank you for your part in the success of Come Out and Play. With your help, our children met an Olympic athlete and were encouraged to use their own special talent to follow their dreams. Below is our formal communication on all-digital and its impact to your residents. Dear Gregory Doyon: This is to inform you that Charter is making some exciting changes for our customers in the Great Falls area. We're going "all-digital", and we're adding more than 90 new high definition (HD) channels to our lineup. On or after, November 18, 2014, Charter will begin removing the analog format of every channel from our lineup and delivering only high-quality digital signals to each television outlet in the home. Many channels will move as fully detailed in the attached customer notification. Over time, television technology has transitioned from low-tech analog to the high-quality digital format. As we move to all digital, we will be significantly increasing our HD lineup by adding more than 90 new high definition channels meaning Charter customers will have access to a total of 200 HD channels once the entire project is completed after November 2014. We are also enhancing our Video On Demand (VOD) offering; customers will gain VOD access to more than 4,500 titles for every television in their homes. There is no additional fee for the new HD channels for customers already subscribing to Charter HD services. Over 90 percent of Charter's customers are already using digital equipment from Charter to view their favorite channels. For customers without a Charter issued set top box or a CableCard device connected to their televisions, this change will require each TV to be installed with Charter Digital equipment to continue viewing favorite programming. To ensure a smooth transition for non-digital households, Charter is providing free digital equipment to customers for a specified period of time depending on eligibility. These offers will vary based on a customer's current level of service and are described in greater detail in the attached customer notification. Applicable standard equipment rate card pricing will apply upon expiration of those offers. Concurrent with the move to all digital, we will be encrypting our basic tier of service. For customers without digital equipment, free equipment offers are being made available based on a customer's eligibility and the tier of service to which they currently subscribe. Encryption of the basic tier will ultimately result in a more secure network and free up necessary bandwidth for increased Internet speeds and other advanced services. In the coming weeks, Charter will actively communicate with customers about how to make the move to all digital. Customer notification efforts will include first class letters, phone calls, telemarketing efforts and an informational website (www.charter.com/digitalnow). Please contact me with any questions or comments you may have at 307-331-3448 or [email protected].
