7-10 May 2020 The XXXII International Art Festival for Children and Youth "Spring Inspiration" under the aegis of the Cultural and Educational Project "I CAN" Location: St. Petersburg, Russia Organizer: Creative Association "I CAN!" Date: 07 May – 10 May 2020 Deadline: 01 April 2020 A relatively young city, St. Petersburg was founded in 1703, and has been playing key role in the history of Russia ever since. St. Petersburg's most renowned novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky in perhaps his greatest novel "The Brothers Karamazov" wrote about three brothers who represent three worlds: the intellectual, the spiritual, and the sensual. No doubt modern St. Petersburg offers a fascinating combo of all these worlds, which will make your stay here a unique and memorable one. Whether you are walking across the city in summer, visiting the world- renowned ballet at the Mariinsky Theater on a magical winter evening, enjoying an early autumn afternoon in one the city's outstanding suburban parks, or delighting in the world-class art collection at the Hermitage Museum at any time of the year, you are sure to appreciate the unique beauty and rich culture of the city on the Neva river. Take a bus ride along its main streets and prospects enjoying its splendid sights: numerous palaces and cathedrals, rivers and channels, old monuments and parks. The city's most popular spots are St. Isaac's Square, the Cruiser Avrora, the Peter and Paul Fortress. In summer a boat trip along the Fontanka River, the Griboedov Canal, or the Moika River; the Mikhailovsky Garden, the Admiralty or Palace Embankments; or around the Peter and Paul Fortress will unveil for you more mysteries of the Venice of the North. Don’t miss a chance to enjoy spectacular panorama of the rasing bridges at night. More than 20 bridges span the Neva river and its armlets. Most of these bridges are bascule bridges and are opened at night during the navigational season for large vessels to pass through. Among the most beautiful are the Troitsky (Trinity), Dvortsovy (Palace), and Bolshoy Okhtinskiy Bridges. Any opinions or claims contained in this Working Paper do not necessarily reflect the views of HSE Ekaterina Boltunova1 RUSSIAN IMPERIAL SPACE OF POWER IN THE FIRST POST-REVOLUTION DECADE (1917 – LATE 1920S)2 This article explores how Bolshevik/Soviet authorities took on and adapted the Russian imperial topography of power i.e. the system of special structures that intended to convey state ideology (monuments to tsars and statesmen, emperors’ residences with their various ceremonial spaces, administrative buildings, and those museums which play a role in power representation). The research traces the changing attitudes to the Russian Empire’s space of power in 1917 – late 1920s that varied from destructing such spatial objects to adapting them to the objectives of propaganda. It argues that with the time being appropriation strategies (renaming, recoding, creating of revolutionary memorials etc.) appeared to have better prospects than straightforward disavowal or destruction. The imperial space of power provided some opportunities to propagate novel and/or universal connotations of power and gradually was found relevant for the needs of the Soviet regime. • 2014 Program
REED COLLEGE EAST-EUROPEAN TOUR 26 APRIL – 11 MAY 2014 This will be the eleventh annual East-European tour sponsored by the Reed Russian De- partment and Alumni Office. As in previous years, it is offered as a practical survey of East Slavic and Russian culture from its beginnings near the end of the first millennium CE to the rapidly evolving post-Soviet present. In that broadly inquiring spirit, we will make unhurried visits to Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, and Moscow and St. Petersburg, the pres- ent and former capital of Russia. Why those cities in particular? The most obvious reason is that they are important centers —important repositories, thanks to their extraordinary museums—of world culture, as well as communities of enormous vitality and intrinsic interest. But another little appreciated yet no less compelling reason is that they are the principal nodes of the historical develop- ment of the East Slavic and Russian world, centers of epochal transformations in its social, economic, and political life and places where its most significant architectural monuments and enduring ideological and social identities were fashioned. To visit the three capitals in succession, moving from the oldest to the youngest, will, if we attend to the details and their shifting contexts, thus be to acquaint ourselves in a reasoned way with the main phases and themes of East Slavic and Russian culture over the thousand or so years of its recorded history. The roots of Kiev, the mother city of that culture, reach back, as a primitive Dnieper River settlement, at least to the mid-sixth century.

PETERSBURG In May 1703, after the surrender of Nyenschantz, Tsar Peter the Great decided to build a fortress at the mouth of the Neva River on Zayachy Island. The laying of a land fortress according to Peter the Great’s plan took place on 16 (27) May 1703, in the Tsar’s presence. This date is considered to be the day of St. Petesburg’s birth. By October 1703, a fortress called Sankt-Peters-Burch (from the Dutch Sankt-Peters Burch, the fortress of St. Peter), was erected under the supervision of A.D. Menshikov by soldiers. On 29 June 1703, a church dedicated to apostles Peter and Paul was laid in the fortress (hence the name Peter and Paul Fortress), and the name St. Petersburg spread to the city that began to form, made up primarily of settlements inhabited by soldiers and peasants engaged in construction. In 1704, the construction of the Main Admiralty and the Admiralty Fortress began, as did resettlement of working people to St. Petersburg for permanent residence. In 1703-04, berths, a trade market, trade routes, the Avsteria, as well as Peter the Great’s residence (see the House of Peter the Great) were all built in the region of the present-day Troitskaya Square. 2 RUSLAND2010 3 19 SEPTEMBER MOSKOVSKI VOKZAL Het Moskovski vokzal (Russisch: Московский вокзал) ofwel Moskoustation is een van de vijf kopstations van Sint-Petersburg. The 2017 Tour of St Petersburg with Philip Birkenstein, including a presentation of a Theo Fabergé Amber Egg to the Catherine Palace in celebration of the 300th Anniversary of the Amber Room. By Helen Wilkins The invitation for a Russian adventure came from St Petersburg Collection, a company created in 1985 by Theo Fabergé, the last grandson of Carl Fabergé. It arrived by email in October 2016. Without a second thought I responded with a clear ‘YES PLEASE’ and booked my flights. Like so many other rather privileged invitees, this was not my first tour with Philip, (CEO of the UK based company). It was my sixth journey from New Zealand for this super-luxury week, staying in the Astoria Hotel (fit for a Tsar), getting to places and parts of palaces that no one else gets to see, also dining with curators of the world’s most wonderful museums. We even appeared on Russian television as Philip presented Theo’s stunning Amber Egg to the curator at the Catherine Palace, for the 300th anniversary of the gift of the amber panels and now the famous Amber Room in Tsarskoye Selo, (Tsar’s Village in Russian). A village 15 miles south of St Petersburg, which is now known as the town of Pushkin, after that famous Russian poet. Guiding us and describing the historical events of the past four hundred years was the incredibly knowledgeable historian, Frieda, assisted by Margarita and Nina. We started with a boat ride along the rivers and canals, (which gave the city the nick-name ‘Venice of the North’) for our first views of St Petersburg.
