It seeks to answer the question, how has activism changed in post-apartheid Manenberg as compared to the 1980s? The study analysed the politics of resistance in Manenberg placing it within the over arching mass defiance campaign in Greater Cape Town at the time and comparing the strategies used to mobilize residents in Manenberg in the 1980s to strategies used in the period of the 2000s. The thesis also focused on several key figures in Manenberg with a view to understanding what local conditions inspired them to activism. The use of biographies brought about a synoptic view into activists lives, their living conditions, their experiences of the apartheid regime, their brutal experience of apartheid and their resistance and strength against a system that was prepared to keep people on the outside. This study found that local living conditions motivated activism and became grounds for mobilising residents to make Manenberg a site of resistance. It was easy to mobilise residents on issues around rent increases, lack of resources, infrastructure and proper housing. -

Though I had been to Cape Town briefly, many years, ago, I had never been as an H4H representative and team member. My two weeks spent there far surpassed anything I could have imagined. Upon entering the H4H offices at the Ikamva Labantu center, I was immediately met with great warmth, welcome, and smiles. This compassion continued for the remainder of my stay. What struck me most about our operations, and what I believe to be the key differentiating factor that sets H4H apart from other sport and development organizations or enterprises, was the commitment and sustainability of our leaders on the ground. Through the years, H4H has established a solid network of local community leaders, our All Stars (H4H Staff) and MVPs (volunteers), who deliver our curriculum and programs on a daily basis. -

SAFA announced on Tuesday, 4 October that they had chosen Knysna to host a friendly match between these two great football teams, bringing the beautiful game to those who don't usually have the opportunity to watch their heros on the field. Representatives from the South African Football Association (SAFA), Local Football Association (LFA), Knysna Local Municipality and Knysna & Partners immediately started with the planning process ensuring the success of the event. During a gala dinner prior to the match, Knysna Executive Mayor Eleanore Bouw-Spies said, "I can’t start to express my excitement and gratitude. Excitement because we have so many great players of 'The beautiful game' here in Knysna, and gratitude because you chose our area, not only to scout for talented players.” The Loerie Park stadium was filled to capacity with soccer enthusiasts similar to those who spent many a day watching the Danish Football team who had used Knysna as a base camp during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Greater Knysna fans watched the clash between Chippa United FC and Cape Town All Stars FC with great excitement. The loud cheers were heard by many near and far. Shortly after the match, Cape Town All Stars FC coach, Boebie Solomons said that his team hoped to have another opportunity to play in Knysna again soon. -

Bulletin 6 of 2013 Period: 1 February 2013 to 8 February 2013 Bulletin` 3 9 of 2018 Period: 28 September 2018 – 05 October 2018 IMPORTANT NEWS LOWER COURTS SHOULD BE FIRST OPTION, BANKS TOLD The Legal Resources Centre (LRC) has welcomed a High Court decision that Magistrate's Courts should be the first port of call for financial institutions seeking judgment against their clients, where matters fall within the lower courts' monetary jurisdiction. According to a GroundUp report, the LRC argued that 'measures must be taken to reduce the economic, social and geographical barriers that prevent a respondent's access to court' as required under the Constitution. 'This judgment is far reaching and incredibly important in affirming the right to access to justice,' said the LRC in response to a decision by a full bench of the Gauteng High Court (Pretoria) on whether the High Court should entertain cases that should be heard by the lower courts just because both courts have jurisdiction under the law. The Judge President had also asked the court to consider whether there was 'an obligation on financial institutions to consider the cost implication and access to justice of financially distressed people' in deciding which court to use. The court ruled that if banks brought their cases to the High Courts when the lower courts had proper jurisdiction, the High Courts could kick the cases down to the lower court. The case arose when 13 matters; reduced to eight after several defendants settled their arrears or the cases were withdrawn, came before the Gauteng High Court (Pretoria). -

TRAVEL WITH CHRIS BROWN SOUTH AFRICA – CAPE TOWN ROAD TRIP Chris and Miguel have taken on the fierce animals of South Africa, but this week they’re heading to the city to see what is on offer. Together, with our lucky competition winner Shennae, they embark on a road trip around Cape Town. The city proves to be quite a challenge when bad weather forces popular attractions to stop running but Chris saves the day by taking them to what the locals refer to as the ‘Church of Meat’. Mizoli’s is a butcher shop/BBQ/dance party in one of the city’s oldest townships. It’s a feast for all of the senses and just the start of the food-- fuelled road trip to the Cape of Good Hope, where our team takes in the spectacular scenery and meet some very cute locals. SOUTH AFRICA South Africa is one of the most diverse and enchanting countries in the world, blessed with spectacular scenery and natural landscapes - soaring mountain peaks, dense and ancient forests, miles of unspoiled coastline, rolling flower fields and crystal-clear rivers. Its wildlife encounters stretch from diving with Great White Sharks to going on a safari to see the Big Five, to seeing the penguins waddling on the Cape. Then there’s the deserted Kalahari, iconic Table Mountain and Cape Point, Kruger National Park’s wildlife-stalked savannah, running through the east of the country and into Lesotho, the Drakensberg. KwaZulu-Natal’s iSimangaliso Wetland Park alone has five distinct ecosystems, attracting both zebras and dolphins.
