He served during the American Revolution, and together they raised a family. In truth, they were fairly normal folk and representative of their times. What makes them special is that their great-great grandchildren decided to hold a family reunion, and have been doing so for over a hundred years. On the fourth Sunday in June, people gather to share food and conversation. They are all related, but often so distantly that it defies the modern understanding of what a family is. When we gather, we know that we are part of something special reaching back in time and hopefully into the future. It has been a joy to be the Delvee family genealogist for the past twenty some odd years. It has been a labor of love and a joy when new people discover that they are part of something so special. This edition (I hope to produce one a year) is for family members to understand where they came from. It was produced on July 1st, so changes after that date are not included. For each person, their decent from Peter, and their clan or tribe are displayed. For those living, only their name and the name of their spouse is displayed. This protects our privacy. If you have any changes or updates, do send them to me at [email protected] Please include your name, parents names and birth date as that makes it much easier to track the change. Please include birth dates, and places; marriage dates and places; death dates and places; burial dates and places; and spouses and spouses parents. In fact, send anything you think your great-great grandchildren might want to know, or should know about you. Scanned photos always make the list of dates and places come alive. Around the first of each month, the family web site (www.delvee.org) is updated with new information that has come in. You can look at the Update page to see the list of members who have changes in their records. We meet yearly in the Delvey Grove on the site of the original Delvee homestead. We are divided into Clans and Tribes. Lucy Maria (Fuller) Delvee, the wife of Calvin Wilder Delvee was visiting her niece, Louise Maria (Delvy) Hale in 1886, and the conversation got around to the Delvee homestead. It was about to be sold to settle the estate of Calvin. They decided that the families of Calvin and Peter should get together one more time. Soon they changed that to include all available descendants of the first Peter. The first reunion was held on Wednesday, 2 June 1886, and was attended by 126 people. It was such as success, that it was decided to meet each year. By the time of the second reunion, the farm had been sold to Mr. William Shepardson. The Delvee Grove was then purchased from Mr. Shepardson for $60.00. Each year, since 1886, the Delvees have been meeting each year in the grove. Delvee Reunion 1893 __________________________________________________________________________ Page 5 Clans and Tribes Within the first 20 years after the Delvee Reunions started, someone noticed that Jonathan had 12 children who lived to adulthood and had children. The reunion, while stating it was for all descendants of Peter, was in reality only the descendents of Jonathan, Peter’s son. The connections with the other descendants had been lost before the reunion was started. It was easy to make the link between the twelve tribes of Israel, and Jonathan's twelve children. Thus we soon had the twelve tribes of Delvee. Twenty years ago, with the advent of computer research and genealogy, descendants of Peter who were not descendents of Jonathan were discovered. Since they were not in the tribes, the idea of clans was developed. Thus the children of Peter each established a Clan, and the Clan of Jonathan, established tribes. The chart below illustrates this system: As time has gone by, distant cousins have married, and in some cases Delvee’s are descended from more than one clan or tribe. This occurs in all large families who had their origin in a small town. Ours is only unique in that we can trace the family. Each descendant of Peter below is identified by their clan or tribe. __________________________________________________________________________ Page 6 Generation One 1. Peter1 Delvee was born in 1744 in Holland.1,2,3,4,5 He emigrated circa 1752 from Holland As a small boy, he accompanied his parents and a younger brother to the New World. On the voyage, his mother died, not an uncommon occurrence in those days. Upon reaching this shore, his father soon died leaving Peter and his brother orphans. Peter was placed with a family in Oxford, Massachusetts. His brother was also placed, but here he disappears into history. To date, no trace of him has been found.6,5 Peter and Lucy Town's marriage intentions were filed on June 7, 1766 in Oxford, Massachusetts.7,8 On July 10, 1766 in Charlton, Massachusetts, Peter married Lucy Town, daughter of Samuel Town and Bathsheba Woods.9,2,7,10,11,4,12 In the Spring following his marriage, Peter moved to Warwick, built a house and started a farm. In the fall he returned to Oxford to bring his wife and new daughter, Bathsheba, back to their new home. It is said that after Lucy's arrival in Warwick, she did not see another woman for a year. Their farm was a prosperous one of over 280 acres.9,4,13 He served in the company of Captain Agrippa Wells, Col. Samuel Brewer's regiment, at Fort Ticonderoga during the Revolution. He mustered out at Deerfield 10 December 1777.14,15 He and Lucy Town lived in Warwick, Massachusetts, on the Delvey farm with his surviving son, Jonathan.6 He died on Monday February 23, 1807 in Warwick, Massachusetts, at age 63 years. His death was recorded in Jonathan Blake's diary.14,10,16,4,12,17,13 The gravestone inscription in Warwick, Massachusetts, reads: Mr. Peter Delvee 23 Feb. 1807 in his 63 yr. Each one who walks the solemn road, behold my body here; prepare to stand before your God and see my spirit there.18 Lucy Town was born on November 2, 1744 in Oxford, Massachusetts.19,20,8,21,10,4,12 She lived in Charlton, Massachusetts, after her father's death in 1760. She died on Saturday May 29, 1824 in
