In the month of Mar we had a three day fruitful ‘Prayer and Healing’ sessions organised by the Sinai Divine Centre team from Kurnool lead by Fr. Jaison VC. The Praise and worship, the singing and the breaking of the ‘Word’ enriched the souls of all the faithful. The sessions went on until 11.00 PM everyday and all the faithful sat through the sessions. Sr. Smita CMC has a gift of counseling. People thronged to her to get spiritual counseling and blessings from her. Sister too with a lot of patience and generosity was able to sit through for long hours listening and counseling the people especially through the references from the ‘Bible’. People are taken aback by this gift of counseling. Our Parish was very fortunate to have her with us for the last two days. These sessions helped the faithful to take part in the devotions of Lent in a serious way. People thronged to the church as soon as the church bell was rung for all devotions. The daily adoration at 9.00 PM helped the faithful a lot in praying to our Lord Jesus Christ. I lead the adoration for 25 days of the Lent. It helped me personally to reflect, pray and preach the Word of God for the faithful. With the same spirit I lead the faithful of Jonnalakothapalli for two days of prayer. In the Holy week the faithful took part in all the activities with a lot of devotion and fervour. Fr. K. Joji SJ preached the Recollection talk for the Kurnool Diocese clergy on 30 Mar. He also preached in the ‘Chrism’ Mass on ‘Priesthood’. He was appreciated for the thought provoking messages on both the occasions. Frs. P. Vijayraju and Santiago concelebrated in the Pasca Vigil Mass. Fr. Vijayraju preached and Fr. Santiago sat for the confessions. It was a blessing to have them with us. I celebrated Pasca Vigil Masses in the substations. This is the first time in their life they were having a Pasca Vigil Mass in their respective churches. On the eve of Easter at 9.30 PM I celebrated the Pasca Eucharist at ‘Avulathippayapalle’. At 12.30 AM of the Easter Sunday I celebrated the Pasca Eucharist at ‘Chukkalur’. At 8.30 AM I celebrated the Easter Sunday Eucharist in Christ the king Church, Tadipatri along with Fr. Santiago. At 3.30 PM I celebrated the Easter Sunday Eucharist at ‘Kallur’ along with Fr. Santiago. I feel it’s a blessing to celebrate the Holy Eucharist in all the substations of the Parish. This is the first time the Parish Priest is celebrating the Holy Week after his arrival to Tadipatri from Rome. He had a sun stroke on Good Friday as he carried the heavy cross in the hot sun and was not keeping so well. The presence of our Jesuit fathers helped him very much. On many occasions he has told me that my presence and help came at a time that he needed the most. Hoping to continue in the same spirit, I thank God for giving me this opportunity-.N. BRITTO,to work with SJ Fr. David Arulappa, the Parish Priest and all the parishioners of Tadipatri. GUDLAVALLERU PARISH:

As soon as the liturgical services were over, the entire congregation went to the hillock at a distance of 6 kms for the Way of the Cross. In the Spirit of Calvary, the people carried a huge wooden Cross through all the 14 stations and reached the top of the hill where Fr. Pratap delivered his message on “the Seven Words from the Cross”. 5 Andhra Vani - May& June 2021 The entire congregation broke the fast by sharing in the common meal that was supplied. On Holy Saturday, there was Mass during the day in which baptismal water was blessed and baptismal vows were renewed. The Easter Mass was at midnight. After the Gospel reading, the statue of the Risen Lord was carried in procession and was placed at the entrance of a well decorated empty tomb by the side of the altar. Fr. Amal preached the homily. At the end of the Mass, everyone was given an Easter Egg as per the custom in the parish. The happiest days for Jesuits at Adilabad were the days of Fr. Provincial’s visit to Utnoor, Mandamarri, and Mancherial. Fr. Provincial came to Utnoor on 6th morning. He joined us at the concelebrated Mass in Syro Malabar rite. Fr. Amal welcomed and introduced him to the congregation. At the end of the Mass, he was felicitated by the parish elders and parish priest with a shawl. As the Bishop has assigned Naranoor, Jainoor, Kerameri, Sirpur(U) and Lingapur mandals for our future apostolic works, we showed Fr. Provincial the headquarters of the first four mandals and the 13 villages from Hatti to Jodeghat. He visited Tokenymovad, Shivaguda and Jodeghat villages, paid tribute to Kumram Bheem the tribal Martyr and went through the tribal museum. On 7th morning we took him to Mandamarri. He was received at the gate of Carmel Academy by Fr. Xavier Rex and the teaching and non teaching staff of the institutions and was led to the grotto of the Sacred Heart where he garlanded the statue, said a prayer and began his visit. He saw all the developments of the past two years, addressed the staff of Carmel Junior College, had tea at the convent of CMC sisters, our collaborators at Carmel Academy and offered Mass for us all at the grotto of the Sacred Heart. Provincial and our Bishop had their meeting at the Bishop’s House in Mancherial. After their meeting, we had a group photo. Fr. Provincial left for Karimnagar by bus at 11.15am. Fr. JOHN JOSEPH AMALADOSS, SJ (AND, 75/58) (10.03.1946 - 14.04.2021)

Born on : 10-03-1946 Entered SJ on : 10-06-1963 First Vows on : 17-06-1965 Ordination on : 25-04-1976 Last Vows on : 03-12-1982

Fr. John Joseph Amaladoss, SJ was my companion from novitiate to Philosophy days for a duration of 8 years. We were together during our pilgrimage experiment to Sarugani to live with the saintly priest Fr. Leveil, SJ.An exemplary Jesuit indeed; deep attachment to mother Society was noticeable from the novitiate days onwards. We, his companions used to fool him “novice master in the making” in those days itself which became true in the year 1997 when he became the Novice Master at Ananda Jyothi, Guntur.

Most of his life was spent in forming Jesuits and guiding Religious men and women in the discerning process. Seven years as Director of Pre-novices, twelve years as Novice Master, four years as Tertian Instructor, four years as PCF and three years as Socius to the Provincial, speak volumes of his spirituality. Everything went on well with him till he realised about his heart problem in the year 2014 which apparently put him down a little bit; but that never deterred him from helping the Religious sisters in their spiritual formation till the last breath of his life on earth.

A jovial person by nature, he won the heart of many; a holy person in the making, he never appeared to leave the presence of Jesus in his life. When such a person leaves this temporal abode for his permanent residence with God, should we mourn for his loss in our midst or rejoice that he has finally reached his heavenly abode? He left us all on 14th April 2021 at the age of 75 having lived in the Society of Jesus for 58 years. He was laid to rest at 6.30 PM on the same day in Andhra Loyola College Cemetery, Vijayawada surrounded by Jesuits and some religious men and women. May his soul rest in- peace. S. GNANADEVAN, SJ

12 Andhra Vani - May& June 2021 FR. ROYCE WENCESLAUS MACEDO , SJ (28.09.1931 - 25.04.2021)

Born : 28.09.1931 Entered the SJ : 29.06.1950 Ordination : 19.03.1963 Final Vows : 26.11.1994 Fr. Royce was a man of God. This summarises his whole life. God mattered all in his life. He lived by God. He spoke of God. He was faithful to God. It is because of this people used to call him a spiritual man. In spite of all the great works he was doing he never missed his spiritual duties. Examen of consciousness played a vital role in his life. It helped him to find the Will of God and to do His Will. He was faithful to his Rosary. His love for Mother Mary was deep. Fr. Royce was a man of the Society of Jesus. He was an exemplary Jesuit. The Mother General of JMJ says that he is “ A noble son of St. Ignatius to the spirit with an exemplary life.” Yes. he had to bring in the name of St. Ignatius whenever he addressed the religious and others. As a good son of St. Ignatius, he loved his Jesuit brothers deeply. He has no enemy in the Society. All are his friends and brothers. He loved our community recreations. In a way he was the source of joy for all of us. We can crack jokes at his expense. For him whatever a Jesuit does either in the apostolate or otherwise was a matter of joy and pride. Fr. Royce was a good teacher. He taught the boys good and elegant English. He spoke in idioms and similes. The boys used to listen to his English with awe and admiration. He was also teaching English for several years in our Jesuit Juniorate at Beschi College, Dindigul. Our scholastics not only loved his classes but also tried to imitate him. He was also Principal of Campion High School, Trichy and Loyola Public School, Guntur. He was kind to the boys. He had a loving way of correcting them. He had special regard for the staff, both teaching and non-teaching. They too loved him. Fr. Royce loved sports and encouraged sports activities wherever he was. He himself was a tennis player. He used to play tennis with the senior boys. It was a joy for me to see him playing with boys. Fr. Royce was human to the core. He treated every one as one should be treated. He was kind at heart. He would not talk ill of others. He saw God in every one. I personally admire his positive attitude to life. He could never offend anyone. Fr. Royce was fond of his old boys. He was in touch with them. He would be there for the old boys meeting without fail. As a spiritual man he loved to share his experiences of spirituality to the religious both men and women and also to the diocesan priests. He had given retreats to all these men and women. He was a spiritual director of many of them. He was their confessor. His talks come from his heart and from his life of prayer. 13 Andhra Vani - May& June 2021 He was very fond of St. Paul. He used to quote the letters of St. Paul almost in every one of his talks. He was also known for his confidentiality. We can trust him and share anything to him without any fear of being known. We, the Jesuits of Andhra Province, miss a great personality. Dear Fr. Royce you will certainly remain in our hearts for many more years. We do have many pleasant memories of you. We will certainly speak about you fondly. Dear friends, I have great admiration for Fr. Royce. He has taught me good many lessons- FR. A. through STANLEY, his very SJ life. Do remember us where you are with our Father in heaven. Final rites of Rev. Fr John Joseph SJ Final rites of Rev. Fr Royce Macedo SJ

14 Andhra Vani - May& June 2021 An ode to a Fall: 20.05.1521 5th Centenary Jubilee of Conversion of St. Ignatius of Loyola

Citadel was ever ours and will ever ours be; Ardent as we’re, by this noon, see the French flee; Near victory last eve has built up our stamina; Never again would they dare to stare at Pamplona; Our obeyance to you O King, the men ready for Finals; None is less suited; each would devour a score of rivals. Time, my sons! to tear the mounted riders apart; Axe down the horses, sparing none, at one dart; Revenge is not God’s way, but ours by pressure; Give a feasting to your lance, every head a slasher; Echo every feat of waylaying each intruder; Time is ripe to risk our life, let the enemy shudder! Verge of winning, Friends, we will prove patriotic; Itching to salvage our wounded pride that’s dynastic; Cakewalk in a while, as angel of justice fights for us; Throw overboard their cannons, but be cautious. Inigo, Martin yelled, move off, you’re at cannon’s fire!(bang!) My God, what’s wrong! he is cast down in writhing mire! Oh Jesus! What a fall I’m in a bizarre mishmash! Ditched to a defeat lies me with left leg crash; Dauntless, I dare fix the date of war for reboot. Infact the mental pang over the carnal seems acute; The dismayed corps seem emotive with all-time Chief; Yearning, their Martial Dragon recover in good belief. Saviour’s advent entailed Man’s First Fall: felix culpa; Hero’s crush no way casual; It’s just Saul’s replica; Instant morale of the French and motherly Magdalena, Emanated in Inigo a Charisma replacing the trauma; Lion would now leap to a saintly image of Penance; Dear to the Father, Jesus seals him: You’ll serve us!

A note to the non-Jesuits:

St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Founder of the Society of Jesus, the cynosure of our eyes, then known as Inigo, a proved warrior and much desired Captain, a hero for many, led the army, along with his brother Martin Garciain defense of the citadel Pamplona, an alluring town that alternately was pounded and occupied by Spain and France. The next turn was on 20th May, 1521. France wanted the metropolis. Inigo, the unchallenged fighter had faith in his imposing cavalry and obvious victory. But the fate had it the reverse. Inigo was successfully targeted. He fell to a cannon ball. The French saw to the safety of Inigo while it was his motherly sister-in-law Magdalena who gave - aP.J. second SANDANASAMY, life that resulted S.J. in his Conversion.

Birth Centenary (1921-2021) Fr. Michael Anthony Windey, the fourth child in a family of twelve, of which seven were in the service of the Church, was born in Buggenhout, Belgium, on 28th Apr 1921. At the age of 25, he landed in India in Jan 1946 as a young Jesuit, eager to know and serve the downtrodden. In 1951 he took up as Head of Department of History and Sociology in St Xavier’s College, Ranchi. He founded the well-known Xavier Institute of Social Science, laid the foundation for Vikas Maitri, an ecumenical service group, started a spiritual elite-training movement “Maria Marg,”. Being enamoured by the tribal way of life, he started a tribal research library, while supervising hundreds of student research theses. He dealt with famine in , and in (1966-68), in cooperation with late Jayaprakash Narayan. It was a cyclonic storm, which hit Coastal Andhra in 1969 that brought this “stormy man” to Andhra Pradesh. With just one volunteer and some pocket money, he gathered with- in days a number of agencies and indi- viduals, lay and religious, for a substan- tial relief program for the hundreds of devastated villages in Guntur, Krishna and Prakasam Districts. This solid relief work inspired many young ones to vol- unteer to work with him. Following Gandhi’s thought pattern, he stayed on to establish a Community Development Programme, unique in its conception and execution. He turned “bricks” into “alphabets”, job-seekers into volunteers, teachers into learners, officials into activists, at one time bureaucrats into constructive workers. The Village Recon- struction Organisation, after a trial and trying period of over a year, was officially registered in Guntur of Andhra Pradesh in 1971 (Golden Jubilee): since then, it has spread to Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Pondicherry, Maharashtra, , and Jammu. At present VRO is engaged in empow- ering people in 171 villages with more than a thousand volunteers. Being exhausted of his committed and prolonged works, he went to his eternal rest on 20th Sep 2009. As we commemorate his Birth Cente- nary, we pray that his dedication and commitment to transform the poorvillagers- PETERcontinue DANIEL, to inspire SJus all to build “Better Villages for a Better World”.
