Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin December 2007 For Justin and Elijah who taught me the meaning of apu, pācam, kātal, and tuai ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I came to this project through one of the intellectual and personal journeys that we all take, and the number of people who have encouraged and influenced me make it too difficult to name them all. Here I will acknowledge just a few of those who helped make this dissertation what it is, though of course I take full credit for all of its failings. I first got interested in India as a religion major at Bryn Mawr College (and Haverford) and classes I took with two wonderful men who ended up advising my undergraduate thesis on the epic Ramayana: Michael Sells and Steven Hopkins. Dr. Sells introduced me to Wendy Doniger’s work, and like so many others, I went to the University of Chicago Divinity School to study with her, and her warmth compensated for the Chicago cold. -

Political Nominations & the Anglo-Indian
Political Nominations & the Anglo-Indian: A Reality Check BRYAN OLIVER PEPPIN The 11th World Anglo-Indian Reunion 2019 held at Loyola College, Chennai, on January 8, 2019. Photo: M. Karunakaran As India gears up for another general election, a forgotten section of the electorate is the about 1.50 lakh strong Anglo-Indian community. Under the constitutional guarantee of Article 331, two members would be nominated to represent the community in the next Lok Sabha as has been the procedure since independence. In this analysis, Bryan Oliver Peppin, Retired Professor of English, The New College, Chennai, and author of Black and White: The Anglo-Indian Identity in Recent English Fiction, discusses the issues that matter for the Anglo-Indian community. Emphasising that “no other individual parliamentarian serves people across the length and breadth of the country” he calls for consensus in the process of nominating the Anglo-Indian representatives to the Lok Sabha. Moreover, the nominated MPs “must have unblemished records and be well-known regarding the welfare of the people they are supposed to represent”. Peppin points out that it is “always better to have outspoken crusaders rather than people who simply sign above the dotted lines” and that the nominated Members of Parliament should be ready and willing to take up a just cause and see to it that justice prevails in all disputes. “Since the two representatives are sometimes lucky enough to be chosen, they should not take it as a matter of course to look down on the people they are supposed to serve”. Anglo-Indian Politics, a brief history he “Anglo-Indian” community has been in existence for about 500 years, but was not recognised as such until the twentieth century. -

May-June 2013 HIHT News
HIHT News Founder: H.H. Dr. Swami Rama To be Committed to Something Means to Do It with Full Dedication and Sincerity Patanjali says, ahimsa pratishthayam tat samniddhau vairatyagah (When one is firmly established in ahimsa, others let go of any hostility in that person’s presence). If you sincerely follow ahimsa with mind, action and speech, even the most ferocious animal will become calm and quiet in your presence. Many yogis practising in the deep forests of the jungle have experienced this phenomenon. When you have no desire or thought to kill any animal, why should an animal want to kill you? If you are truly established in ahimsa, you will radiate love and no one will hurt you. Animals, even the deadliest of snakes and the most vicious animals, will transform into loving creatures before you. If you are not afraid, you will not invite danger. I can give you one example from my own experience: When I was just eleven years of age, Rishikesh was very different than it is today. At that time it was not polluted or crowded and it was mostly forests. One day after taking a dip in the Ganges, my master took me to the nearby Virbhadra temple to meditate. I was still a child, so naturally I kept opening and closing my eyes after every few minutes. Once when I opened my eyes I was horrified to see a cobra sitting just one meter away from me! My Lord, I became so afraid! I closed my eyes again and tried to meditate, but I could only meditate on the cobra. -
