4 Dear Members

If you’re moving on you could still stay with HASSRA!

A number of colleagues are about to leave DWP - or indeed may have already gone - as part of a voluntary exit scheme or transfer to another government department. If this affects you or anyone you know, please read on.

HASSRA is introducing a new National Associate Membership scheme which enables people to retain their ties with HASSRA after they leave their current employment. So anyone moving to another employer within government or leaving the civil service altogether on a voluntary or compulsory exit scheme can stay within the HASSRA family and continue to enjoy a vast array of sporting and leisure activities and save £££s with our discounts and other membership benefits. That includes the option to join the fabulous HASSRA Lottery.

So if you are about to move on and are interested in keeping up your membership, please visit http://intralink/1/corp/sites/hassra/about/DWP_T802953.asp#TopOfPage or complete the attached application form, and we’ll do the rest. And if you know of someone who has already gone, why not let them know about this new scheme?

And remember, HASSRA is your sports and leisure association. No other organisation offers you and your family so much for so little. So don’t delay in completing your application and carry on enjoying all the benefits of the best sports and leisure association anywhere.

Best wishes,

Ann Cook

PS: Anyone retiring from the civil service and about to receive a civil service pension already qualifies for continuing membership as a retired member. Go to:

10 ‘Ride for Rewards has started – log your miles for prizes’

HASSRA Leeds would like to encourage you to take part in an initiative to get people cycling in and if you’re into cycling, check out our new Cycling Club. The June go:cycling Ride for Rewards campaign has started! Are you logging your cycling journeys?

The aim of the campaign is to get as many people as possible in West Yorkshire cycling – and we need YOU!

Register today at wygocycling.com/rewards and start logging your cycling journeys, via the website or on a smartphone app. Every time you do this you will collect Bike Miles and during June these can be redeemed for the chance to win one for 150 fantastic prizes, from bikes to vouchers, jackets to lights - there is something for everyone!

As you log journeys you can also see a total of how many miles you have cycled, how many calories you have burned and how much CO2 and money you have saved, showing you what significant changes cycling could make to your life.

So why not cycle to work one day this week, or take the family out at the weekend, or next week when you’re cooking that curry and realise you’ve run out of rice, take your bike to the corner shop rather than the car! START NOW and log as many miles as you can this month. To motivate you… the chances of winning and losing a few pounds in the process are high!

Remember the go:cycling Mantra: Ride for Rewards and Save Money Ride for Rewards and Stay Healthy Ride for Rewards and Beat the Traffic Ride for Rewards and Relive your Youth

Running Club

Regular runs: meet 12:15 in the Forum on Tuesdays & Thursdays

Please let us know (by e-mail is fine) if you are going to come so we can look out for you in the changing rooms/ Forum reception.

Thank you to all those who completed our survey earlier in the year, it has certainly give us plenty to think about. The survey told us that some people would like to run at other times (not just Tuesday & Thursday lunch), so if you’re going out at another time and please feel free to drop an e-mail the day before to let people know. We normally have runners out as follows: Tuesday - Emma Rawson & Emily Mattison Thursday – Ali Connell & Desiree Normington Friday – Ali Connell In response to the survey, and subject to demand, we are looking to have some sessions specifically for new joiners, where we will specifically pace the run according to your needs. These are most likely to be held on one of our Thursday sessions, so please get in touch if you are interested. Congratulations to: · all those who completed the Leeds ½ marathon in May, · the HASSRA team who won second prize in the corporate relay, at the Leeds ½ marathon. We hope that the non-runners amongst you have “got the bug”. · Jacqui who completed Liverpool marathon, an achievement for anyone, but even more so for Jacqui, who despite suffering from shin splints. · Emma Rawson, who recently got a PB in the Askern 10K Please let us know about events you have participated in, how you got on, and whether you would recommend it. Running club benefits - Would you say no to a free £10? We know there are lots of runners in Quarry, many of whom do not have time to run during work (and there is no obligation for you to do this by joining) but you could still benefit by becoming a member of the club. Subs are just £5 a year, and you can claim a £10 refund for race 1, and a £5 refund for race 2 (for races not already subsidised by HASSRA). Interested? Contact, Ali Connell to join, or make a claim. For race inspiration why not try: a Park run – 5K every Saturday at 9am www.parkrun.org.uk or, a Jane Tomlinson 10K event, through the summer www.runforall.com or a Leeds Athletic Network race, a series of 16 races in Leeds from 1 to 10 miles, for details see: www.leedsathletics.net Hint of the month Getting into the habit of running regularly – pick a day and block out the time in your calendar, it won’t guarantee you can go out, but it should make it a bit easier. We want to hear from you, with ideas, suggestions, feedback – please get in touch with any of us: Ali – [email protected]. DOG DAY AFTERNOON AL PACINO 1975

The 70s were a time in which directors took risks with plots and ideas for films. Encouraged by the turbulence in the 1960s there was still an under current left in the 70s and we see this here. The plot is a bit crazy – a guy Sonny played by Al Pacino tries to rob a bank with his cack handed assistant, the luguibrious Sal.

They seem to make a complete mess of it but in the ensuing chaos, we discover more about Sonny and the chaotic world he inhabits. And indeed American society then. The Summer of love idealism had wilted and been replaced with a new cynical dourism. Sonny exclaims at “one point how much do you earn in a bank $115 a week – I can’t live on that in NYC”. His motives are examined and he appears to be questioning his insanity himself. The tale of how he is trying to raise money for a sex change for his wife is touching if outlandish. I think it’s a bit out of place in an otherwise very original story. I like the way he is accepted as a counter culture hero as though the under class need this after Che Guevra., Abbie Hoffman and Jim Morrison are dead. I like the fact that some of this film doesn’t make sense, that his objectives are crazy and made up on the spot, that he chooses to live in Algeria – a place even more oppressed than where he is then. I like mindless protest. The fact that those same hero worshippers turn on him later when he is being driven to the airport. I love the way in which like many method actors Pacino becomes the movie. And what an iconic man he is in so many films.

Book your favourite classes and Working in Partnership with activities online at your Local Authority. BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS HASSRA TRIPS AND EVENTS

The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity to participate in events. The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form.

1. Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks from the date first advertised, including proposed events where expressions of interest are being requested.

2. Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room, submit their applications together, and determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of the group via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and conditions.

3. A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer.

4. Once the closing date is reached, the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined. Where there are sufficient places for all applicants, then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed.

5. Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and travellers will be liable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled). Full price means the undiscounted "non member" price. Where necessary, HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes but travellers need to be aware that the cost of insurance, (if purchased), is non-refundable.

6. Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the persons travelling. It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you do not purchase the insurance offered.

7. Single supplements. There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a single room. Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the same sex, the organiser will arrange for pairing. If an individual has indicated that they are willing to share, they will not have to pay a single supplement even if no pair is available.

8. Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available, a random draw of application forms will determine those successful in receiving a place, subject to Clause 8. Cheques accompanying these applications will then be processed. Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to determine the order of the reserve list.

9. The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot. An organiser is the person who arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee, whether or not s/he is a member of the Committee.

10. Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip, if that trip is subsequently confirmed, applications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before any unfilled places on the trip are advertised. On these occasions, once the closing date is reached, remaining places will be filled on a first come first served basis.

11. Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip, to the same destination, and will be given priority for available spaces.

12. Applications from solely non-member groups, i.e. not accompanying a full HASSRA member, wishing to participate in an event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has passed.
