Historic Houses Association Card Around 1500 stately homes, castles and gardens are members of the Historic Houses Association in the UK and over 40 of these are open to the public in Yorkshire. You can gain entrance to many of these, including Newby Hall, Burton Constable Hall and Castle Howard using one of the HASSRA Leeds Historic Houses Association cards. Check the Historic Houses Association website, www.haa.org.uk, to find out which places offer free entry to card holders and tell Peter Blinston ([email protected] ) the days you’d like to use the card. Then it’s as simple as picking up one of our four cards and dropping it off when you’ve finished. Harewood House Card Harewood House lies between Leeds and Harrogate and always has events and displays suitable for all the family. HASSRA Leeds has entry cards for members to borrow that will allow free family entry to the grounds and house.     21 January 2019 THE LAUNCH OF A MAJOR NEW CULTURAL BIENNIAL FOR YORKSHIRE THE MAIN FOCUS OF ACTIVITY AT HAREWOOD HOUSE IN 2019 “Why are we so interested in craft today?” is the question the inaugural Harewood Biennial seeks to answer when it launches at Harewood House in March 2019 and opens a vibrant new season at the Yorkshire stately home. The first exhibition of the Harewood Biennial is Useful/Beautiful: Why Craft Matters, which aims to challenge preconceptions, spark interest and inspire debate about the role craft can play in culture, identity and society. At a time when there is a surge of interest in craft, (from the supermarket to the catwalk) there is also confusion – is it a product or a process? Is it always handmade? Is it just a marketing buzzword? Visitors to Harewood, Leeds, will experience a visual treat across the House by some of the most exciting British-based makers of the moment. Each invited to interpret a different room, the twenty- six exhibitors work both nationally and internationally and span fashion, textiles, woodwork, glass, metalwork, furniture, papercraft and leather. Highlighting Yorkshire’s wealth of skilled talent, six of the twenty-six exhibitors showcased are based in Yorkshire. Distinguished names include Wakefield-based paper artist and illustrator Andy Singleton, Sheffield-born ceramicist Lena Peters and Whitby glass maker, Effie Burns, rubbing shoulders alongside statement printmaker Anthony Burrill, Welsh sustainable denim-makers Hiut Denim, whose jeans are worn by Meghan Markle, Freed dance shoes and the Emily Blunt-sporting Fox Umbrellas. Curated by design critic Hugo Macdonald, the exhibition crosses generations and disciplines, mixes classic and contemporary and uses Harewood House as a platform to showcase and question the very definition of skill and craft today.

RECENT ACQUISITION IMPORTANT DRAWINGS BY THOMAS CHIPPENDALE SENIOR AND JUNIOR The Chippendale Society has recently acquired six previously unknown drawings attributed to Thomas Chippendale senior and junior. The key to their attribution is provided by a drawing for a lantern pedestal, which is the design drawing for a set of six supplied by Chippendale to Harewood House in 1774. The drawings are by two different hands. Two are thought to date from about 1760 and are typical of Thomas Chippendale senior’s free-flowing style with its use of delicate washes to suggest shadow and perspective. The other four are by a different hand and can confidently be attributed to Thomas Chippendale junior (the first to be discovered) on the basis of strong similarities with his engravings published in 1779. These are the first Chippendale drawings of any kind in the fully mature neo-Classical style of the 1770s. Chippendale junior was first recorded as active in his father’s firm in 1766, aged 17, and his first signed drawing is of a neo-Classical tablet, dated 1772. However, it has long been assumed that he did not assume a significant role until c.1775-6. The new drawings demonstrate that Chippendale junior was involved much earlier than previously thought.

It is a house and collection of national importance and one of Yorkshire’s leading visitor attractions, attracting between 150-200,000 visitors a year. The organisation currently has an income of approximately £2.2m per annum, generated through admissions, trading activity and fundraising. The ambition is to grow this income with the support of a new Head of Finance, working closely with the new Director. This is a crucial role within a successful charitable organisation. The Role Reporting directly to the Director, the Head of Finance will be responsible for the strategic development and maintenance of the Trust’s financial and management accounting and budgeting systems and help to embed an entrepreneurial approach to increasing income.
