Vacancy: Conservation Care Assistant

Location: Harewood House Trust,

Working Hours: Part-time – 20 hours per week over 5 days (usually Monday to Friday 7.30am until 11.30am, with occasional weekends)

Harewood House is one of ’s finest country houses, lived in by the Lascelles family since its creation. It is a house and collection of national importance and one of ’s leading visitor attractions, attracting between 150-200,000 visitors a year.

The House and Gardens have been open to the public since the 1950’s and in 1985 the educational charitable trust, the Harewood House Trust (HHT) was established to maintain and develop Harewood, its collections and grounds, for the public benefit. Since then there have been many successful exhibitions hosted at the House and the creation of Harewood’s first contemporary space, the Terrace Gallery, by the current Lady Harewood in 1989. This was the first dedicated contemporary space of its kind in a historic house.

The Role

A superb opportunity has arisen for a Part-Time Conservation Care Assistant to join the Housekeeping team at Harewood House Trust, in order to ensure its world renowned collections of fine and decorative arts are presented, maintained and cleaned to the highest standards.

Working within the surroundings of one of England’s finest 18th century country houses, the successful candidate will work as an active member of the team to ensure that both the public and behind the scenes areas of Harewood House are kept to a high standard of cleanliness. The post-holder will assist in the preventative conservation of the Harewood House Trust’s collection both on display and in store, as well as engaging with visitors and answering any questions about the general care of the collection if required.

The successful applicant must have an interest in care for heritage and antique objects. And will need to be educated to GCSE level or equivalent with good spoken and written English.

The post holder will be expected to undertake training both on and off site and have an enthusiasm for learning. It is mandatory to be able to work at height (maximum 6 meters) and be comfortable using ladders and scaffolding. The applicant will need to be physically fit and to lift a weight of 10kg.

A full clean UK driving licence with access to own vehicle is required.
