Dear Lord, give us the strength to introduce to you and through you to this Assembly our guests labour diligently, the wisdom to think clearly, the courage to from the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers.     PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARDS’ ASSOCIATION OF ALBERTA President’s Report to the 2013 Annual General Assembly President Dittrick President’s Report to the 2013 Annual General Assembly This has been an exciting year of travel, engaging conversations and continued advocacy on behalf of children attending Alberta’s public schools. The summary which follows offers a highlight of the work I have undertaken on behalf of our members, within the context of the Association’s three Work Plan Priorities: Priority One: Support and Improve Public School Education Priority Two: Support and Improve Local Governance Priority Three: Support and Improve the Association’s Health and Well Being Priorities One/Two: Support and Improve Public School Education/Local Governance Meetings with the Minister of Education Over the past year I have had the pleasure of meeting with the Hon. J. Johnson, Minister of Education on a number of occasions. At these meetings we covered a number of discussion points including: a. Education Act (Bill 3), including: i. Section 52: Shared Transportation Service Agreements; ii. Section 32: Clarification regarding the provision which states “parent as primary decision maker.” iii. The Constitutional limitations regarding access to separate school education as articulated within the Constitution Act of 1867; and iv. The critical importance, value and impact of Local Board autonomy and authority, including the need for all levels of Government to recognize and support this. b. Natural Person Powers / Trustee Eligibility/ Separate School Establishment; c. Regulatory Development Process and our Association’s policy positions regarding same; d. Other matters of mutual concern. I have found the meetings to be open, productive and positive.

    Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta President’s Report: 2014 Annual General Meeting 2014 Annual General Meeting President, Arlene Hrynyk President’s Report: 2014 Annual General Meeting In October 2013 I made the commitment to our Members that I would focus on building strong relationships, listen carefully to the wisdom of our Members and carry forward the stories of our Public Schools as we focus daily on that which is in the best interests of our children. It has been an exciting year, full of wonderful opportunities which have enabled me to share the message that our Public Schools have and will continue to invite, celebrate and support ALL children; that our Members believe Alberta’s Public Schools are the first choice of our communities, where all of our children learn and live the values of democracy together, reflecting our hope and shaping the future of our communities. I am honored to serve as your President and reaffirm my commitment that my work will continue to focus on that which unites all of us who proudly serve the staff, families and communities that support all children attending Alberta’s Public Schools. The Report which follows provides several highlights regarding the work I have undertaken over the past year. Priorities One/Two: Support and Improve Public School Education/Local Governance Meetings with Hon. J. Johnson, Minister of Education Over the past year I have met and/or spoken with the Hon. J. Johnson, Minister of Education on a number of occasions. During our conversations I have focused on the Association’s priorities including the following: • Inspiring Education • My Child’s Learning Website • Provincial Bargaining Model • Regulatory Review • Task Force for Teaching Excellence • Infrastructure and Space Concerns • Funding for Public Schools • Effective Partnerships and Communications I have found the meetings to be an excellent opportunity to reaffirm our ability to be solution focused, which was acknowledged by the Minister.

    Restoring the Alberta Advantage 2013-14 CTF Budget Submission to the Alberta Government Derek Fildebrandt Canadian Taxpayers Federation T: 1-800-661-0187 E: [email protected] | 1 About the Canadian Taxpayers Federation The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is a federally incorporated, non-profit and non-partisan, advocacy organization dedicated to lower taxes, less waste and accountable government. The CTF was founded in 1990 when the Association of Saskatchewan Taxpayers and the Resolution One Association of Alberta joined forces to create a national taxpayers organization. Today, the CTF has more than 81,000 supporters from coast-to-coast. The CTF maintains a federal office in Ottawa as well as provincial and regional offices in British Columbia, Alberta, the Prairies, Ontario and Atlantic Canada. Provincial and regional offices conduct research and advocacy activities specific to their provinces in addition to acting as local organizers of nation-wide initiatives. CTF offices field hundreds of media interviews each month, hold press conferences, utilize social media like twitter, facebook, youtube and our own blog, as well as issuing regular news releases, commentaries and publications to advocate on behalf of CTF supporters. The CTF’s flagship publication, The Taxpayer magazine, is published four times a year. Action Update e-mails on current issues are sent to CTF supporters regularly. CTF offices also send out weekly Let’s Talk Taxes commentaries to more than 800 media outlets and personalities nationwide. CTF representatives speak at functions, make presentations to government, meet with politicians and organize petition drives, events and campaigns to mobilize citizens to affect public policy change.

    Proposed severance packages for Alberta MLAs If the Alberta government approves the recommendations of the all-party Member Services Committee, MLAs who retire or are defeated in 2005 would receive severance packages as per the following list. If the recommendations are approved, MLAs will receive three months’ pay for every year of service after March of 1989, based on the average of the three highest-paid years.
