Share this Newsletter with your Community Post Tweet Forward Headline Article: Minister Brian Mason visits Lethbridge On Monday, May 28th, Minister of Transportation, Brian Mason, came through town on a listening tour to talk all things Transportation. SouthGrow attended a meeting with the Minister alongside a number of our members to discuss projects that are important to the region or of particular concern. Mason listen as representatives from the MD of Taber and Lethbridge County talked about the challenges they are facing with bridge repair and replacement, as well as water infrastructure. Cardston was present and was able to confer with the Minister about their hopes for the Caraway border crossing. The Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce and the Highway 3 Twinning Association discussed the economic importance of our trade corridors to the economic well-being of the province. Finally, SouthGrow presented on the time-sensitive need for a decision from the Province regarding funding for the Southern Alberta Electric Vehicle Network. The Southern Alberta Regional Electric Vehicle Network is a partnership between the Alberta Southwest Regional Alliance, the SouthGrow Regional Initiative, the City of Calgary, the City of Medicine Hat, and the City of Lethbridge. This project plans to deploy 19 or 20 Phase 3 fast charging stations across Southern Alberta in order to make electric vehicle travel in the south fully viable. Right now the initiative has almost half the money we need in order to break ground, and we can have assets in the ground by November of this year if we are able to secure matching funds from the Province.

Our municipality was neither informed nor considered while this decision has been progressing. Multiple municipalities from Nonhern Alberta met with Minister Hoffman (Apri|18) to voice our concerns and were assured that we would be advised/consulted/informedbefore any decision was made. It was very disheartening to hear from Gordon Bates (Executive Director — Air Ambulance Services) at AHS, that a decision to award the contract to a single proponent was imminent. This bad decision will be very devastating for the residents of Northern Alberta for the following reasons: - Key components of the RFP process have been completely ignored. For example, one of the criteria identified within the RFP was the condition that hangar space he provided at the air base. The successful proponent does not have hangar space as there is no available space to be had. This calls the entire RFP process into question. Ifthere is no hangar space available, response time will increase as the service will have to come from some other community. Since Peace River had the most Air Ambulance flights last year (1400+), it seems counter-intuitive to bring the planes from outside the community.

The increased attention to children’s exposure has prompted child protection authorities to make changes to their policies, in an attempt to protect children. Despite the well-intentioned nature of these efforts, they have been criticized for producing negative consequences, such as, re-victimizing battered women, ignoring abusive men, and failing to protect children.

Abstract Our understandings of health and illness are shaped by the social and political context in which these understandings emerge (Foucault, 1975). Accordingly, I explore the socio-political context in which Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) emerged in Alberta through investigation of three research questions: 1) how did FASD emerge and become recognized as a public health concern in Alberta? 2) how do those in charge of managing FASD in Alberta understand this disorder? and 3) what are the implications of understanding FASD as it is currently understood? The data for this qualitative study was collected through 23 semi-structured interviews, archival research, and document analysis and was analyzed using discourse analysis.

Government of Alberta News Release For Immediate Release October 21, 1999 "The appointment of the Information and Communications Technology committees marks the beginning of an exciting new initiative in which the government and industry will work closely together to strengthen our technological infrastructure, and build an economic sector that will help this province succeed in the new global economy." Dr. Lorne Taylor Minister, Innovation and Science Technology leaders to work with government to strengthen information and communications technology sector EDMONTON -- Individuals from some of Alberta's leading information and communications technology organizations are partnering with the government to help the province's technology sector grow to a $30 billion a year industry by 2010. Minister of Innovation and Science Lorne Taylor announced October 21 the appointment of a number of technology and business leaders to three committees that will oversee and advise the government on the implementation of strategies outlined in a provincial Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Strategy. Implementation of the strategy, presented to the government by the Alberta Science and Research Authority (ASRA) in October 1998, is one of the key responsibilities assigned to the department by Premier Ralph Klein when he created the department of Innovation and Science in May 1999. The ICT strategy, which was developed in consultation with business, industry, universities and government departments, is aimed at growing Alberta's ICT sector to a $30 billion a year industry by 2010. The ICT industries and businesses in the province currently generate about $8 billion a year. Another goal of the strategy is to increase the number of jobs in the sector by 35,000 by the province's centennial in 2005.

  • Premier Stelmach Sets out Priorities; Names New Cabinet, Reorganizes Portfolios Changes to Government Structure Reflect Government Priorities
March 12, 2008 Premier Stelmach sets out priorities; names new Cabinet, reorganizes portfolios Changes to government structure reflect government priorities Edmonton... Premier Ed Stelmach has laid out the priorities for his new administration, reorganizing portfolios and adding four new ministries. The Premier also named his new Cabinet which features new faces and new assignments for previous members, and introduces the role of parliamentary assistants who will help support ministers on key projects. "This Cabinet and new government structure will focus on building a stronger Alberta and improving the lives of Albertans,” said Premier Stelmach. “The Cabinet team balances experience and new perspectives and is well skilled for the work ahead.” The new Cabinet will be focused on five priorities: ensuring Alberta’s energy resources are developed in an environmentally sustainable way; increasing access to quality health care and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of health care service delivery; enhancing value-added activity, increasing innovation, and improving the long-run sustainability of Alberta’s economy; reducing crime so Albertans feel safe in their communities; and providing the roads, schools, hospitals and other public infrastructure to meet the needs of a growing economy and population. Changes to the government structure will help better meet these priorities. Government’s increased focus on culture is reflected in the new Ministry of Culture and Community Spirit which also has responsibility for the voluntary sector and the Human Rights Commission. The new Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs will help fulfill government’s plan to ensure affordable housing is available to all Albertans and to address emerging urban issues.
