The Roles of Solon in Plato’s Dialogues Dissertation Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Samuel Ortencio Flores, M.A. Graduate Program in Greek and Latin The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Bruce Heiden, Advisor Anthony Kaldellis Richard Fletcher Greg Anderson Copyrighy by Samuel Ortencio Flores 2013 Abstract This dissertation is a study of Plato’s use and adaptation of an earlier model and tradition of wisdom based on the thought and legacy of the sixth-century archon, legislator, and poet Solon. Solon is cited and/or quoted thirty-four times in Plato’s dialogues, and alluded to many more times. My study shows that these references and allusions have deeper meaning when contextualized within the reception of Solon in the classical period. For Plato, Solon is a rhetorically powerful figure in advancing the relatively new practice of philosophy in Athens. While Solon himself did not adequately establish justice in the city, his legacy provided a model upon which Platonic philosophy could improve. Chapter One surveys the passing references to Solon in the dialogues as an introduction to my chapters on the dialogues in which Solon is a very prominent figure, Timaeus- Critias, Republic, and Laws. Chapter Two examines Critias’ use of his ancestor Solon to establish his own philosophic credentials. Chapter Three suggests that Socrates re- appropriates the aims and themes of Solon’s political poetry for Socratic philosophy. Chapter Four suggests that Solon provides a legislative model which Plato reconstructs in the Laws for the philosopher to supplant the role of legislator in Greek thought. -

Socrates has been put on trial by the citizens of Athens for multiple “crimes” all related to his teaching of philosophy. Meletus is his prosecutor, but he is addressing a jury of hundreds of his fellow citizens. In this famous work, Socrates defends his practice of questioning everything and describes the beauty of a philosophical life. He also antagonizes his fellow Athenians… Note, Plato was Socrates’ student and this is report of how the trial went from Socrates’ perspective. Socrates himself wrote nothing – his philosophical career was spent verbally debating his fellow Athenians. APOLOGY How you, O Athenians, have been affected by my accusers, I cannot tell; but I know that they almost made me forget who I was--so persuasively did they speak; and yet they have hardly uttered a word of truth. But of the many falsehoods told by them, there was one which quite amazed me;--I mean when they said that you should be upon your guard and not allow yourselves to be deceived by the force of my eloquence. To say this, when they were certain to be detected as soon as I opened my lips and proved myself to be anything but a great speaker, did indeed appear to me most shameless--unless by the force of eloquence they mean the force of truth; for is such is their meaning, I admit that I am eloquent. But in how different a way from theirs! Well, as I was saying, they have scarcely spoken the truth at all; but from me you shall hear the whole truth: not, however, delivered after their manner in a set oration duly ornamented with words and phrases. -
The Phaedo by Plato
Selections from The Phaedo by Plato The Death of Scorates, David, 1787. [The Phaedo tells the story of Socrates’ final moments spent, as one would expect, in philosophical dialogue with his friends. The main subject of the dialogue is the immortality of the soul. The Phaedo is one of Plato’s middle period dialogues and, as such, reveals much of Plato’s own philosophy. In the arguments Socrates puts forth for the immortality of the soul we find a clear exposition of both Plato’s metaphysics as well as his epistemology. In the first section we find Socrates explaining to his friends why a true philosopher does not fear death. Philosophy is here described as a preparation for death.] ECHECRATES: Were you there with Socrates yourself, Phaedo, when he was executed, or 57 did you hear about it from somebody else? PHAEDO: No, I was there myself, Echecrates. ECHECRATES: Then what did the master say before he died, and how did he meet his end? I should very much like to know. None of the people in Phlius go to Athens much in these days, and it is a long time since we had any visitor from there who could give us any definite b information, except that he was executed by drinking hemlock. Nobody could tell us anything more than that. PHAEDO: Then haven't you even heard how his trial went? 58 ECHECRATES: Yes, someone told us about that, and we were surprised because there was obviously a long interval between it and the execution. What motivates his rejection of Crito’s proposal to escape? These and similar questions concerning the decision made by the philoso- pher gave rise to a considerable number of scholarly inquiries as well as to a whole array of answers. Thus, Greenberg (1965) sought the explanation in Socrates’ “heroic temper”, while Barker (1977) argued for the decisive role of the philosopher’s elevated moral awareness. Importantly, a great deal of scholarly discussion builds on the appar- ent incompatibility of two accounts of civil duties in the Apology and Crito. In the Apol- ogy (29 c–d), we see Socrates challenge his audience and, in fact, the judges with the declaration that he will under no circumstances renounce philosophy, and that he will continue his instructing the Athenians. In the Crito, the philosopher chooses to reject his friend’s offer of help, and, when doing so, he implicitly accepts the death sentence.1 Whilst the two dialogues are often regarded as inconsistent, various attempts to explain- ing the inconsistency resulted in an impressive number of publications devoted to the 1 Quotations from the Apology and Crito in C.D.C. When trying to ascertain why Socrates chooses to die, the article will suggest that taking into account the then Athenian customs and rituals may contribute to a better understanding of the dialogue. -

During the late 19th and early 20th century, the result of this research, especially in terms of the ‘Sokratesbild’, was always the same, and Xenophon’s dependence on the logoi Sokratikoi written by Plato and Antisthenes has always been quite obvious 2. In the middle of the 20th century, however, new studies have given rise to another opinion 3, which made the case for dependence of Xenophon on other Socratics. Thus L.-A. Well, a very serious charge, which shows a good deal of character in the young man, and for which he is certainly not to be despised. He says he knows how the youth are corrupted and who are their corruptors. I fancy that he must be a wise man, and seeing that I am the reverse of a wise man, he has found me out, and is going to accuse me of corrupting his young friends. -

Putting the Philebus's Indispensable Method To
PUTTING THE PHILEBUS’S INDISPENSABLE METHOD TO USE ABSTRACT: The Philebus presents a comprehensive epistemological and metaphysical view in two of that dialogue’s most difficult passages (15b-18c, and 23c-28c). In particular, the method described in the first passage is used in the second passage to do metaphysics; and the metaphysical picture it uncovers is precisely the one needed to support the epistemological presumptions of the first passage. This ‘circularity’ is not vicious, but elegant; seeing it so reveals most about Socrates’ preferred candidate for the (cause of) good in human life. There is considerable perplexity around the methodological discussion of the Philebus 16a ff. Quite apart from the vexed issues of what the method is, and what it is for, there is the awkward puzzle over why Socrates bothers bringing it up at all. As he introduces it, Socrates claims that this is a “gift from the gods to men...hurled down from heaven” (16c5) and that “everything in any field of art that has ever been discovered has come to light because of this” (16c2-3).1 This gift is recommended not merely as a useful tool, but as a necessary one: no knowledge except by observing this procedure. Thus, I shall argue, the claim at the heart of this god-given method of inquiry is an epistemological one: knowledge is that state which results from observing these recommendations for inquiry. Less than a page later, however, and as soon as his interlocutors indicate they have grasped the basic points, Socrates declares that the Divine Method, with its demand for an analysis of pleasure and knowledge, is not necessary after all. -

The Great Books programs, I decided, are a charming fringe eccentricity that shouldn't have been treated as generally representative Euthyphro and Meno, on the other hand, were remarkable for my understanding. This is a humbling experience, when we consider how foolish our own answers will appeat in the distant future. It depicts a conversation between Socrates and his wealthy friend Crito regarding justice, injustice, and the appropriate response to injustice. However silly and callow it may be, there's no point rewriting a review this old without re-reading the book. What does it mean for the human soul, and how can we, in waking life, ensure that our souls will live on in a greater and better way, after separation from the bodily shell? The obvious personal interest of his accusers in using the law to gain their own ends, and even the simple fact that the human laws of any state can easily be used to attain nearly any goal by one skilled enough in their manipulation, left me feeling that in this regard Socrates was either being willfully simple, or making an ironic comment on law itself. The Argument in Plato’s Apology and Crito MIKOŁAJ DOMARADZKI / Poznań / While the relation between the individual and the state belongs clearly to one of the most complex issues in Western political philosophy, the relation between the Socrates of the Apology and that of the Crito ranks, accordingly, as one of the most contentious problems in the entire Socratic scholarship. This is due to the fact that in the Apology (29 c–d) one is confronted with a defiant rebel who daringly challenges the established political order, whereas in the Crito (51 b–c) one encounters a law-abiding citizen who meekly submits himself to the harsh judgment of the Athenian Laws. Thus, the two dialogues present the reader with the difficulty of somehow reconciling Socrates’ belligerent repudiation of the state during the trial with his humble acceptance of the resulting death sentence. If the Apology and Crito revolve around the perennial conflict between the private (τὸ ἴδιον) and the public (τὸ κοινόν), then their dilemma is whether, and if so, in what circumstances, the citizen is entitled to flout the laws of their state. Carried to its extreme, the doctrine of civil disobedience leads to the problem of “a city without laws (πόλις […] ἄνευ νόμων)”1. Clearly, if everybody could reject the state and its laws whenever they felt disappointed with these institutions, then the only possible result would be social disin- tegration and total anarchy, which, as Plato argues in the Republic (562 b – 564 a), would ultimately lead to tyranny. -
