Mr. Garcia’s Assignments: 4th Quarter – Credit 2 Assignments Due: May 1

Government B United Nations Notes & Test Complete the notes and take the test on the United Nations. There is no reason to turn in your notes, your test grade will also be used for your notes grade. Think about what purpose the United Nations holds in our modern world? Where are they currently working to make the world a better place? How have they helped us avoid conflict in the past?

Economics Taxes & Government Spending Test (30% of the credit) I will upload the notes, although they are not a required assignment. View the presentation and use it to take the test. Facing Economic Challenges Test (30% of the credit) I will upload the notes, although they are not a required assignment. View the presentation and use it to take the test. Research Project (40% of the credit) You have three options for your research project, Taxes, Government Spending or Unemployment/Low income programs Here is what I want you to do: If you choose to research taxes, how has the federal tax rate changed over time? What is the history behind income tax? What is the difference between a variable tax rate, and a flat tax on incomes? Who benefits from a flat tax? Research the 1978 Prop 13, how does the Prop 13 on the November ballot change the law? Who would be affected? What states have the lowest taxes (income, sales, and property), and which have the highest? Of these states which would you prefer to live in? If you choose to research government spending look deeper into how the federal, state, and local governments spend our tax money. What stands out to you? Is there a program that you disagree with? What is the biggest expense for each level of the government? What are your feelings on the national debt? Look at the current COVID-19 bailout, how is the money being spent? Is it a good use of our tax dollars? Where is the money for the bailout coming from? If you choose to research Unemployment/Low income programs, I want you to research programs that help people out during these hard times. Start on the local level with food banks, and other places you can get a free meal. Where do these places get donations from? How are they funded? How do you volunteer or donate? Then move up to the state, and federal level. What programs are there to help people living in poverty or who are currently unemployed? Some suggestions are Section 8 Housing, Food Stamps, WIC, Unemployment Insurance. How are the different programs funded? How prevalent are issues of abuse (people taking advantage of the programs)? For an example research Florida’s program to drug test people before they could receive unemployment insurance. Was it a good idea in your mind? Was it a proper use of state funds (drug test cost money)? Your research project should be 1-2 pages typed, and please include your sources! World History WWII Project I want you to make me a presentation on one aspect of WWII that interest you, your presentation should be around 15 slides long, include pictures, and text in short bullet point format. If you try to copy the text from the internet you will not pass this credit! I will upload an example slide to the assignments page, and on my website. There will also be a list of topics to choose from, email me with questions. Mrs. Kendall – 4th quarter – Credit 2 Assignments Due: May 1

MUSIC APPRECIATION

Rolling Stone Magazine is one of the leading music experts out there. They create lists of great songs, etc... In their list of 100 Best Albums of the 2000’s, I chose one – a band I have never heard of - and I am hoping you haven’t either, TV On the Radio.

TV on the Radio, ‘

Infernal visions! Portents of doom! Awesome keyboards! One of the decade's most innovative bands greeted the end of the Bush era with a cry of horror. But David Sitek's production also brought pop clarity to the New York quintet's blend of soul, punk, and doo-wop. Amid the desolation, and sang of having sex ("Lover's Day"), defying the man ("Red Dress") and glimpsing better days ahead ("Golden Age"). Alternative title: The Audacity of Hope.

This is what RS wrote in brief about the . So, following that model, you are going to listen to each song on the album and write a critique of it. Think of the music, lyrics, vocals. If you need to look up the lyrics to see what they are saying, do it. But just “listen” to the music. What do you hear? What do you feel? Do you agree with their music? Their lyrics? Do you agree with RS that it is a top album of the 2000’s? Would you buy their music? Or not? Explain.

DO NOT COPY OTHER CRITIQUES OF THIS ALBUM!!! I will know it. You will not receive credit for plagiarism!!!!

Enjoy the listening experience. Be open to something new!

Email your final work to me!

English 1- 2

ASSIGNMENT #1

Vocabulary from The Learning Network. Here is the link: https://nyti.ms/2c5Z3RU

From this page, you are doing the top 5 words; bonanza, cthonic, bandy, lacuna, and parlous. I like how TLN presents these words and gives you an excellent example of how to use them. Read the definition, the example and then take the quiz. After going through all 5 words, use the words in a narrative – any topic you want. Your narrative must make sense with the words of course!

ASSIGNMENT #2

Write 1 (one) personal narrative. Choose from these topics: ▪ Is your bedroom a nightmare? ▪ How well do you take criticism? ▪ Do adults who are "only trying to help" sometimes make things worse? ▪ What could you live without?

Again, choose only one topic. DO NOT write about all of them in one essay! Choose one and focus only on that topic! Brainstorm and create an outline before you begin your essay. You are turning in the outline also. https://youtu.be/gPMuvXl7KYI The above link is a video of the instructions to all of the above! Use it!

English 3-4

The link below is a video that explains all of the above from me!! Hope it helps! http://somup.com/cYfjFn1J2y

First Assignment: Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life – 4 Entries Chronicles of your life in the form of an “alphabetized existence” (See below for formal examples)

Example #1: Bay Area Driving to the Bay yesterday is never a picnic until I can get a glimpse of the city. The clear skies, blue water, hills and skyscrapers blow my mind and then I remember how fortunate I am to live in such a beautiful place. People from all over the world come here to visit, vacation and see the sights, just like we do with Paris, Egypt, Europe, Hawaii etc… Every type of person you can imagine lives in the Bay Area bringing their own flavor and culture which makes a beautiful and stunning banquet of spicy dishes to dine on. Yep, I’ll travel to the Bay anytime just so I can be a part of it.

You are expressively writing about you, your day(s) of life without school. What are you doing? If it's a lot of "nothing", then write about your "nothing". The example I used is only 1 paragraph. Make yours 2 paragraphs! Use Figurative Language; similes, metaphors, hyperboles, and personification. • Simile – Using "like" or "as" • Metaphor – Not using "like" or "as" • Hyperbole – An extreme exaggeration • Personification – Giving a non-human entity human characteristics I expect to see at least 2 of these in each entry. Title your entry and alphabetize them when you are finished. You are doing 3 of these. Check out this Adobe video to remind you about figurative language: https://spark.adobe.com/video/fNrBoKpkWx6Nv
