Mr. Garcia’s Assignments: 4th Quarter – Credit 2 Assignments Due: May 1 Government B United Nations Notes & Test Complete the notes and take the test on the United Nations. There is no reason to turn in your notes, your test grade will also be used for your notes grade. Think about what purpose the United Nations holds in our modern world? Where are they currently working to make the world a better place? How have they helped us avoid conflict in the past? Economics Taxes & Government Spending Test (30% of the credit) I will upload the notes, although they are not a required assignment. View the presentation and use it to take the test. Facing Economic Challenges Test (30% of the credit) I will upload the notes, although they are not a required assignment. View the presentation and use it to take the test. Research Project (40% of the credit) You have three options for your research project, Taxes, Government Spending or Unemployment/Low income programs Here is what I want you to do: If you choose to research taxes, how has the federal tax rate changed over time? What is the history behind income tax? What is the difference between a variable tax rate, and a flat tax on incomes? Who benefits from a flat tax? Research the 1978 Prop 13, how does the Prop 13 on the November ballot change the law? Who would be affected? What states have the lowest taxes (income, sales, and property), and which have the highest? Of these states which would you prefer to live in? If you choose to research government spending look deeper into how the federal, state, and local governments spend our tax money. What stands out to you? Is there a program that you disagree with? What is the biggest expense for each level of the government? What are your feelings on the national debt? Look at the current COVID-19 bailout, how is the money being spent? Is it a good use of our tax dollars? Where is the money for the bailout coming from? If you choose to research Unemployment/Low income programs, I want you to research programs that help people out during these hard times. Start on the local level with food banks, and other places you can get a free meal. Where do these places get donations from? How are they funded? How do you volunteer or donate? Then move up to the state, and federal level. What programs are there to help people living in poverty or who are currently unemployed? Some suggestions are Section 8 Housing, Food Stamps, WIC, Unemployment Insurance. How are the different programs funded? How prevalent are issues of abuse (people taking advantage of the programs)? For an example research Florida’s program to drug test people before they could receive unemployment insurance. Was it a good idea in your mind? Was it a proper use of state funds (drug test cost money)? Your research project should be 1-2 pages typed, and please include your sources! World History WWII Project I want you to make me a presentation on one aspect of WWII that interest you, your presentation should be around 15 slides long, include pictures, and text in short bullet point format. If you try to copy the text from the internet you will not pass this credit! I will upload an example slide to the assignments page, and on my website. There will also be a list of topics to choose from, email me with questions.
