A Chapter in the History of Coffee: A Critical Edition and Translation of Murtad}a> az-Zabīdī’s Epistle on Coffee Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Heather Marie Sweetser, B.A. Graduate Program in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures The Ohio State University 2012 Thesis Committee: Dr. Georges Tamer, Advisor Dr. Joseph Zeidan Copyright by Heather Marie Sweetser 2012 Abstract What follows is an edition and translation of an Arabic manuscript written by Murtad}a> az-Zabīdī in 1171/1758 in defense of coffee as per Islamic legality. He cites the main objections to coffee drinking and refutes them systematically using examples from Islamic jurisprudence to back up his points. The author also includes lines of poetry in his epistle in order to defend coffee’s legality. This particular manuscript is important due to its illustrious author as well as to its content, as few documents describing the legal issues surrounding coffee at such a late date have been properly explored by coffee historians. The dictionary Ta>j al-ʿAru>s, authored by Murtad}a> az-Zabīdī himself, as well as Edward Lane’s dictionary, were used to translate the manuscript, which was first edited. Unfortunately, I was only able to acquire one complete and one incomplete manuscript; other known manuscripts were unavailable. Arabic mistakes in the original have been corrected and the translation is annotated to provide appropriate background to the epistle’s commentary. A brief introduction to the history of coffee, a sample of the debate surrounding the legality of coffee in Islam, and a biography of the author is provided. -

Post introduces Post Grape-Nuts cereal, one of the first ready-to-eat cold cereals. 1914 C.W. Post dies and ownership of the business passes to his daughter, Marjorie. The Postum Cereal Company continues to follow the formula for success which C.W. established: selling high-quality, nutritious cereal products through marketing and advertising techniques that appealed to the common man and woman. The company invests over twelve million dollars in advertising between 1895 and 1914. 1922 The company reorganizes as the Postum Cereal Company, Incorporated. By 1923 The company’s executive offices are located at 342 Madison Avenue, New York with manufacturing facilities in Battle Creek, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario. 1923 The Postum Cereal Company, Inc. establishes an employee stock plan. 1924 An Educational Department is formed and one of its principal activities is providing consumer nutrition education. The department publishes nutrition stories for children and a nutrition handbook on school lunches for use by teachers, health workers and food service directors. In 1931, the department name is changed to Consumer Services. The Postum Cereal Company posts sales of over $24 million. The company’s executive offices are now located in the Postum Building at 250 Park Avenue, New York City. 1925 The Postum Cereal Company acquires the Jell-O Company for $67 million in cash and stock. -

Kraft The history of KRAFT goes back to 1903, when, with $65 in capital, a rented wagon and a horse named Paddy, J.L. Kraft started purchasing cheese at Chicago’s Water Street wholesale market and reselling it to local merchants. Within a short time, four of J.L. Kraft’s brothers joined him in the business, and, in 1909, they incorporated as J.L. Kraft & Bros. Co. In 1914, J.L. Kraft and his brothers purchased their first cheese factory in Stockton, Illinois. In 1915, they began producing processed cheese in 3-1/2 and 7-3/4 ounce tins. J.L. From the eighteenth to the twentieth century, coffee cultivation represented the basis of household income. Changes in rural and urban culture of the nineteenth century were influenced by the coffee trade, likewise the fundamental transformations of the Colombian economy during the first half of the twentieth century. The Colombian economy and the idiosyncrasy of its people still depend on coffee, especially in rural areas and the Andean ranges. Italian Espresso in Space to Celebrate International Coffee Day
ITALIAN ESPRESSO IN SPACE TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL COFFEE DAY European Space Agency astronaut Paolo Nespoli and the Italian Space Agency VITA mission crew have successfully once again tested the ISSpresso project, drinking coffee thanks to the innovative capsule-based espresso machine created by Argotec for Lavazza Turin, Italy (October 1st 2017) – The crew of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) mission VITA (Vitality, Innovation, Technology, Ability), including most notably the European Space Agency astronaut Paolo Nespoli, have enjoyed an authentic Italian espresso on board of the International Space Station (ISS) to celebrate International Coffee Day. In fact, the crew has successfully tested the capsule-based espresso machine ISSpresso created by Argotec for Lavazza — in a partnership with the Italian Space Agency (ASI) — which on 3 May 2015, during the Italian Futura mission, allowed Samantha Cristoforetti to drink the first espresso in micro-gravity conditions in history. In its first phase, the partnership with ASI, which coordinated the experiment, allowed the ISSpresso machine to be brought to the International Space Station, and then, through negotiations with NASA, to be kept permanently operational onboard. International Coffee Day has thus been the occasion for the two European Space Agency’s Italian astronauts to pass the baton on, from Samantha Cristoforetti to Paolo Nespoli, who is now on his third space flight and, in recent months, has been able to perform several experiments promoted by Argotec. “We are proud to be able to celebrate International Coffee Day 400 kilometers above Earth’s surface thanks to this important 100% Italian research project developed with Argotec,” commented Marco Lavazza, Group Vice Chairman.
