There now follows a complete list of negatives known as the “Sid Rickard Collection”, as at May 2005. The locomotive or negative number is given in the first column, * indicates that the print has been published prior to May 2005. As accurate a description as possible is given of the view and, unless stated otherwise, all prints are of good quality. ALL PRINTS ARE THE COPYRIGHT OF THE J & J COLLECTION AND NO COPYING OR PUBLISHING OF ANY OF THE VIEWS IS ALLOWED WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION. ________________________________ WESTERN REGION. 35 EBV + 210LE at Heath Low Level, both loco’s off of 88B though No.210 had only just been Transferred from Treherbert. No.35 will pick up the D6 freight for Nantgarw Colliery from the Low haymarket Level Sidings and No.210 will act as banking engine. Friday 30/5/52 35*Passing through Heath (Low Level) Halt with the above freight, loco has BRITISH RAILWAYS in full on tank sides. Friday 30/5/52 35 A super view of the engine working hard near Heath (High Level) Halt on a cold winter’s morning with the D8 Cardiff Docks - Llanbradach Colliery freight. Thursday 7/1/54 35 Having now passed Sid, the engine continues to climb towards Heath (High Level) Halt with the above freight. Thursday 7/1/54 35 Approaching a snowy Heath Junction with the D7 Cardiff Docks - Bargoed Pits freight, good exhaust steam. Tuesday 2/2/54 35*A delightful view of the locomotive rounding the curve at Glan-y-Llyn bunker first with the D10 Nantgarw Colliery - Cardiff Docks freight. The former Cardiff Railway station and goods shed are visible in the background. Saturday 10/11/56 35 Has now passed Sid and continues southwards with the above freight. No.35 was withdrawn from service later the same month and was reallocated to Worcester MPD in January 1957 for use as a stationary boiler where she stayed until January 1958. Saturday 10/11/56 36*An 88B engine, passing a snowy Heath Junction bunker first with a short D2 Cwm Bargoed - Cardiff Docks freight. The canvas cab side sheets are unfurled and carriages are stabled in the Low Level Sidings in the background. Tuesday 2/2/54 36*Makes an impressive study, working hard near Llanishen with the D8 Cardiff Docks - Llanbradach Colliery freight. Monday 31/5/54 36*Approaches Heath Junction in a flurry of steam and smoke with a short D7 Cardiff Docks - Bargoed Pits freight. Thursday 3/6/54 36 Again employed on the D7 Cardiff Docks - Bargoed Pits freight though this time passing Cherry Orchard Wagon Works. Saturday 9/4/55 36 An excellent shot of the engine passing Heath Junction on the down relief line, bunker first, with a short D2 Cwm Bargoed - Cardiff Docks freight which has a steam crane and match truck amongst it’s consist. Saturday 2/2/57 36 A fortnight later and another superb study of the locomotive running bunker first with the D2 Cwm Bargoed - Cardiff Docks freight though this time rounding the curve at Beddau Loop Junction. Good exhaust steam from the engine and there’s a slag ladle in the train consist. Saturday 16/2/57 36*Passing the staggered platforms at Ystrad Mynach Station with the D7 Cardiff Docks - Bargoed Pits freight, just one month before withdrawal. Saturday 7/9/57 36 With the above train, arriving at Bargoed Pits, crossing over from the main line to the colliery branch and about to pass Bargoed Pits Signal Box. Saturday 7/9/57 36*A superb shot of the engine shunting at Bargoed Pits, a view dominated by the slag heap in the Background. Saturday 7/9/57 36 Again seen shunting at Bargoed Pits. Saturday 7/9/57 37*Another 88B engine, ambling through Cefn On Halt with a short D7 Cardiff Docks - Bargoed Pits freight which appears to have two tar wagons in the consist. Loco has a clean smokebox but is otherwise ’grubby’. Very nice shot. Tuesday 12/8/52 37 Climbing towards Heath Junction with a D7 Cardiff Docks - Bargoed Pits freight which again appears to have a tar wagon in it’s consist. Thursday 26/7/56 37 Two days later and the engine was photographed at the same location with the same D7 working 1 though this time there are no tar wagons in the consist. 37 would be withdrawn in the following September. Saturday 28/7/56 38*Nice shot of this 88B engine climbing towards Heath (High Level) Halt with the D8 Cardiff Docks - Llanbradach Colliery freight. Friday 13/8/54 38*Ambling past the allotments on the Roath Branch, bunker first with the D10 Nantgarw Colliery - Cardiff Docks freight, a very nice shot. Saturday 26/1/57 38 Working hard on the climb towards Heath Junction with the D7 Cardiff Docks - Bargoed Pits freight which includes a tar wagon in it’s consist. Saturday 2/2/57 38*Waiting to enter Bargoed Pits with the above D7 freight as No.5650 from n Shed (sub- Shedded to Rhymney), departs bunker first with the R2 (6.55am Rhymney - Ystrad Mynach) freight. Very nice shot. Saturday 27/4/57 38 An impressive study of the locomotive carrying the D7 target, stood ’light engine’ at Bargoed Pits in between shunting operations. Saturday 27/4/57 38 + 42 Both locomotives ’out of steam’ on Cardiff East Dock Shed. Sunday 25/8/57 38 View of the front end of loco, ‘out of steam’ on Cardiff East Dock Shed, smokebox of No.3408 visible in background. Sunday 25/8/57 38*On the Penalltau Branch near Ystrad Mynach Station with a rake of mineral wagons, the working may be the D3 Cardiff Docks - Ystrad Mynach freight. Saturday 7/9/57 38*Later the same day, No.38 heads a down freight bunker first on the Cylla Branch and has just passed a former Rhymney Railway somersault signal (in the ’off’ position) and is about to pass under the Pontypool Road - Neath line. In the background a 56XX 0-6-2T can be seen in the sidings, having possibly worked the B10 Cadoxton - Penrhiwfelin empties. Excellent shot. Saturday 7/9/57 38*Standing light engine at Beddau loop junction after working the D7 Cardiff Docks-Bargoed Pits freight.This was the loco’s penultimate turn of duty.Friday 4/10/57 40 A rather poor shot of this 88B loco joining the main line at Heath Junction, bunker first with the D10 Nantgarw Colliery - Cardiff Docks freight. This is a box camera negative. Thursday 17/4/52 40 Passing through Whitchurch (Glam) Station with the D10 Cardiff Docks - Nantgarw Colliery freight. The loco has BRITISH RAILWAYS in full on the tank sides. Wednesday 30/4/52 40 Later the same day sees No.40 rejoining the main line at Heath Junction, bunker first, with the return working of the above, the D10 Nantgarw Colliery - Cardiff Docks freight. This negative has been Intensified. Wednesday 30/4/52 40 A rather busy scene at Heath Junction with No.40 approaching with the D10 Cardiff Docks - Nantgarw Colliery freight which is being banked by 0-6-0PT No.3707 whilst No.41, which is bunker first, ’gets the road’ on the down relief line with a southbound freight. Friday 30/5/52 40*In this shot Sid is on the footbridge at Cefn On and No.40 has just passed beneath and is drawing into Cherry Orchard Sidings, bunker first, with the D2 Cwm Bargoed - Cardiff Docks freight. This Locomotive was withdrawn in October, 1953. Tuesday 12/8/52 41 An 88B engine which, although carrying the D6 target (Cardiff Docks - Cherry Orchard), is seen crossing over at Heath Junction with an up Engineer’s Train. Wednesday 30/4/52 41 An excellent shot of the engine working hard and approaching Heath Junction with the D8 Cardiff Docks - Llanbradach Colliery freight, the 88B shedplate being clearly visible. Friday 13/2/53 41 Easing through Taffs Well Station, bunker first with the D10 Nantgarw Colliery - Cardiff Docks freight. Walnut Tree Viaduct is partially visible in the background. Thursday 27/8/53 42 A lovely shot of the engine in Cherry Orchard Sidings, bunker first with the D2 Cwm Bargoed - Cardiff Docks freight which has a slag ladle in the consist. Saturday 9/4/55 42*Another 88B engine, approaching Heath Junction with an up train of mineral empties for the collieries. One of the few train that ran during the ’rail dispute’ of May, 1955. Monday 30/5/55 42*Having just passed the photographer, No.42 continues climbing through Heath Junction with the D7 Cardiff Docks - Bargoed Pits freight. What appears to be condemned stock is visible in the sidings in the background. Very good shot. Friday 17/6/55 42 A delightful study of steam and shadows as No.42, in a fairly clean condition, passes under the footbridge at Cefn On Halt with the D7 Cardiff Docks - Bargoed Pits freight. Saturday 31/3/56 LF 42*Working hard on the climb through Llanishen with the D8 Cardiff Docks - Llanbradach Colliery freight which includes wagons loaded with pit-props. Thursday 10/1/57 42 Crossing the road at Watford Crossing on a cold winter’s day with the D7 Cardiff Docks - Bargoed Pits freight. There is a lot of atmosphere in this shot as the trains’ progress is observed by workmen 2 on and around a Commer lorry. Saturday 16/2/57 42*Bunker first near Llanishen with the D7 Bargoed Pits - Cardiff Docks freight. This locomotive was withdrawn the following September.
