Period.By Gregg GWhile I am not a big fan of Coffee-Table books, this one I did like. The book does an excellent job of educating its reader about the monumental structures underneath London. It's comprised mostly of large, beautiful pictures, a few wonderful drawings, and marginal text. What little text there is, however, is both useful and insightful. Essentially, a few blokes from some counterculture spelunking groups decided to pool their resources and publish some pictures of the . Not just the tubes, but the sewers, the hidden rivers and culverts, forgotten and abandoned railway stations, utility passages and storage areas, WWII , and even the newest subway digs deep, deep underneath everything else previously mentioned. They did this completely illegally. Only authorized persons are allowed in these places, but these people went down there, at their own personal risk of safety and security, because they felt that the people whose tax dollars pay for these PUBLIC works, deserve to see what it is that they are paying for. The book is best summed up by the title of this review, which is an actual quote from the authors, and that alone is reason enough to buy it.4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Nice effortBy AllerianBefore I discuss this book, I'll give a little background about myself. I am an active and experienced drain explorer / photographer. If you've gotten into the topic at all you have likely seen my work as UnderMKE. This topic is my passion. The biggest win for this book is that is was actually published by a publisher. It has an appealing title and the quality of the book itself is quite nice. Using London as your explore city builds excitement as . I was super excited to hear about and order it.However, as someone who works very hard to find interesting underground spots and even harder to make an amazing photograph from them, this book is a little disappointing. The ratio of snapshots to excellent photos is around 10:1. The style of writing within this book is also a challenge, again it is a matter of quantity vs. quality. The narrative style just didn't click with me at all. Speaking to the actual photos, the London drains have been shot much better than this by others. I was disappointed to see some of the best drains in London completely overlooked. The rest of this book covers train , steam tunnels, and other kinds of infrastructure. At this point a lot of adventures seem like breaking and entering, which is not my cup of tea and (imo) hurts the serious exploring community. For comparison, there are two books that must be mentioned here: The first is "Rivers Forgotten" by Jeremy Kai (published by Koyama Press). Jeremy (Inventor77) was my original inspiration and his underground work is as good as it gets. His book is one amazing photo after another with just the right amount of text. The second book worth mentioning is "UnderMKE: A photographic exploration of Milwaukee's underground waterways." (Self-publish). Every page a labor of love.So is this book worth it? I'll say yes because it is such a nice publishing effort, but then I will also recommend that you search Flickr for "london drains" to see potentially more interesting photos.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not much to see.By Theodore R. SarbinAll of the photographs are badly underexposed. Can't see much detail at all. Authors probably thought it was "artsy" that way. Definitely not worth the money.

Now available in a new expanded edition, this collection of extraordinary images from beneath Londonrsquo;s streets will fascinate anyone interested in what lies under the surface of one of the worldrsquo;s greatest cities. Peel back the layers under a London street and yoursquo;ll discover ahaunting, dreamlike world of hand-laid brick sewers, forgottentube stations, World War II evacuation shelters, secretgovernment bunkers, and boring machines laying newsewer, communication, and transport grids. Bradley L. Garretthas worked with explorers of subterranean London to collect anastonishing array of images documenting forbidden infiltrationsinto the secret bowels of the city. This book takes readersthrough progressively deeper levels of Londonrsquo;s historicaland contemporary architecture below the streets. Beautifullydesigned to allow for detailed viewing and featuring bespokeillustrations by artist Stephen Walter, Subterranean Londonreveals the locations few dare to go, and even fewer succeed inaccessing.

"The joy of this [book] is that rather than showing something merely dead, it reveals secrets that apply to people's own lives, it widens the emotion and wonder by creeping into the little dark corners of a major city's psyche."mdash;Vermicious"The most comprehensive photographic account of subterranean London ever produced."mdash;SlateAbout the AuthorBRADLEY L. GARRETT is Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Southampton. He is the author of Explore Everything: Place-Hacking the City.
