“This Fabulous Flotsam”: Michael Moorcock's Urban Anthropology In Prague Journal of English Studies Volume 4, No. 1, 2015 ISSN: 1804-8722 (print) '2,10.1515/pjes-2015-0004 ISSN: 2336-2685 (online) “This fabulous flotsam”: Michael Moorcock’s Urban Anthropology in “London under London” Christoph Houswitschka Michael Moorcock is often described as “one of the most prolific and varied writers working in Britain” (Malcolm 146). His success as a writer and editor of science fiction and fantasy literature is well established, but he is also the author of two novels about London, Mother London (1988) and King of the City (2000). Hardly known, Mother London by Michael Moorcock, offers itself to a variety of approaches that have been widely discussed in the context of studies on English literature during the Thatcher years, post-modernism, and psycho-geography. The novel resonates with the author’s own childhood in war-time London without being autobiographical. It tells the story of three Londoners who were traumatised during the Blitz. The following article focuses on the mysteries of subterranean London that represents the hidden and unconscious identities of its inhabitants in the post-war period. Michael Moorcock offers no “redemption for the traumatized city”, as Luckhurst claims, but rather investigates in Mother London, as Groes holds against him, “the post-war inability of Londoners to make themselves heard” (55). Everything they had become was linked to London, the city that neither protected them nor helped them to cope with what they had experienced when they were young. All three are “absorbed” (52) by London. Moorcock “re-imagines London as a web of linked fragments and identities, brought into vibrant being by the babel of London’s voices. It attempts to encompass London in all its massive diversity” (Baker). Its bar claimed to be the deepest in the UK, located approximately 60m below street level under Chancery Lane tube station. While there is no public access to any of these newly uncovered tunnels, there is one underground bunker in Whitehall that the public can see for themselves: the Cabinet War Roomsopened to visitors in Guy Shrubsole, who mapped this Land Registry data and revealed some of these secret tunnels on his blog Who Owns England and later in his eponymous bookwent down the tunnels at High Holborn with the help of some urban explorers while doing research.

Abstract Rethinking Urban Space in Contemporary British Writing argues that the prose literature of its featured authors offers a unique forum through which to perceive and account for the multifarious agency of urban space. Chapter one examines the limitations of using the Marxist spatial theory of Henri Lefebvre, widely adopted by literary scholars, to account for the widespread appearance of abandoned, subterranean and transient spaces in contemporary British writing.     OTHERS, DOUBLES, MIRRORS, SELVES: SCAVENGED IDENTITIES AND DOPPELGÄNGER SPACES IN NEIL GAIMAN’S CORALINE, NEVERWHERE, AND THE GRAVEYARD BOOK Lucia OPREANU “Ovidius” University of Constanţa Abstract: The paper aims to examine the journeys undertaken by the protagonists of Coraline, Neverwhere and The Graveyard Book in an attempt to highlight the extent to which Neil Gaiman’s prose not only reshapes the uncanny and challenges the conventions of fantasy and horror alike, but also adds new dimensions to the doppelgänger paradigm. Far from being confined to the familiar premise of the ghostly other, Gaiman’s doubles range from surrogate parents and monstrous necrophages to intertextual impostors and, more importantly, extend beyond the level of individual identity into the realm of architecture and landscape. By focusing on salient details of Coraline Jones’s encounter with the Other Mother, Richard Mayhew’s descent into London Below and Nobody Owens’ unconventional upbringing, the analysis aims to draw attention to the numerous ways in which the three texts engage in doppelgänger scenarios, not only featuring stolen identities and mirror worlds but also employing a wide variety of intertextual strategies to cannibalize, recycle and recreate familiar plots and tropes whilst steadfastly reinforcing the value of authenticity. Every picture in this book was taken without permission from anybody. Period.By Gregg GWhile I am not a big fan of Coffee-Table books, this one I did like. The book does an excellent job of educating its reader about the monumental structures underneath London. It's comprised mostly of large, beautiful pictures, a few wonderful drawings, and marginal text. What little text there is, however, is both useful and insightful. Essentially, a few blokes from some counterculture spelunking groups decided to pool their resources and publish some pictures of the London underground. Not just the tubes, but the sewers, the hidden rivers and culverts, forgotten and abandoned railway stations, utility passages and storage areas, WWII bunkers, and even the newest subway digs deep, deep underneath everything else previously mentioned. They did this completely illegally. Only authorized persons are allowed in these places, but these people went down there, at their own personal risk of safety and security, because they felt that the people whose tax dollars pay for these PUBLIC works, deserve to see what it is that they are paying for.

After a critical overview of previous attempts at defining underground heritage by associations such as UIS, SSI and UNESCO, this article updates the definition of the new-born class of UBH on the basis of three main criteria: position (by introducing the concept of Geographical Zero Level), manmade character, and cultural relevance, both material and immaterial. Building on the outputs of several projects devoted to this topic and the results of academic expertise in this field, the author proposes a new dedicated methodological approach consisting of a chart for the classification of artefacts as historical UBH and a strategy for their reuse based on a four-level scale: Re-inventing, Re-introducing, Re-interpreting and Re-building.
