18 DANCE PROGRAM Once again, we are building our dance program so that those who love to move can burn off the excess calories.! We have two dance venues - one on site - the Brolga - which is mainly for dance exhibitions and workshops and the other for more formal, but Workshop levels indicate the level of expertise required by participants D = suitable for a person with a disability L = all levels B = beginners I = intermediate A = advanced Dances - School of Arts Hall, Cobargo Village Friday Evening Dances Time Genre/Band Callers Level 8:00 – 9:30 pm Bush Dance - No Such Thing Sally Leslie L No Such Thing recreates the authentic feel of the old time dance bands and will soon get your feet tapping along to their favourite collected Australian dance tunes. 9:45 – 11:15pm Latin Dance Erika Mordek & Rachel Murphy L Erika and Rachel will take you thorough the exciting world of Tango and Salsa! Saturday Evening Dances 8:00 – 9:30pm Contra Dance - Rob Mahony & Friends Jeanette Mills & others L Contra dancing is a form of American traditional social dancing. It’s fun and friendly and new people are always welcome. All dances are taught and there is no need to bring a partner. 9:45 – 11:15pm Irish Ceili - Bunch of Keys Paul Carr L Bunch of Keys have played in sessions and Ceilis over many years and bring you tight, lilting dance music to get your feet moving and your heart pumping. Completely committed to converting every set of hips to this Latin style of dance, there is no escape. Highly addictive. 10:30 – 11:45am Bush Dancing Sally Leslie (No Such Thing) Learn basic steps and movements to enjoy social bush dancing and learn a few new and unusual dances. 11:45 – 1:00pm Morris Dancing Black Joak Morris D Learn the venerable tradition of Morris dancing with some unqualified experts. Be prepared to hit sticks together and wave some hankies around as Black Joak teach a traditional dance from the Cotswolds in England. Everyone is welcome and everyone is free to look as silly as Black Joak do. 1:00 – 2:15pm Flamenco Erika Mordek (Talla Tango) shoes to make noise. 2:15 – 3:30pm Contra Dancing Canberra Contra Club Come and play some contra music. We provide the music and lead a session that includes Quebec, Appalachian, New England, and more. Music (printed dots) provided. 3:30 – 4:45pm Irish Set Dance Paul Carr (Set In Their Ways) Infectious Irish reels, jigs, polkas, slides and hornpipes combine to keep your feet happy, while Paul and the team show you how to do the moves to keep you looking good at the evening ceili. 4:45 – 6:00pm Rapper - Sword Dances Alistair Brown Rapper dancing is traditionally done in mining communities in the north east of England. Five dancers perform WORKSHOPS AT THE BROLGA - SUNDAY 9:15 – 10:30am Wake Up Dancing (30 mins) Rachel Murphy Can Can Project (45 mins) Wake up with a slightly irreverent approach to dance, usually completely unplanned and still in her pyjamas, Rachel is A project based on the original French Bordello style Can Can before Hollywood got it’s hands on it. Everyone most welcome to come and have some fun. High Kicks will not be expected. Ankles may be shown. Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin’s music will take you down to the river to groove to their sweet soul sounds. 11:45 – 1:00pm English Dance Margaret Bollinger (Ryebuck) Come along for a mix of English dances from Playford onwards with Sydney’s oldest bush band – Ryebuck. Join in the fun and learn a variety of dances with friends both old and new. 1:00 – 2:15pm Deep River Dancers Linda Bennett (Deep River Dancers) D The Deep River Dancers perform and teach movement and rhythms based on African Traditions. Their philosophy is that dance is for everybody and want to share the joy and freedom of dancing to live drumming. 2:15 – 3:30pm Folk Dance Canberra Lesley Rose The idea for this workshop is to have fun and enjoy yourself whilst experiencing the different music, moods and rhythms of world dance. By the end, you will have learned easy (and slightly less easy) dances from different parts of the world such as Europe, the 26 Dance Bands and Instructors Black Joak Morris Rachel Murphy Black Joak Morris performs the traditional folk dancing of Raw, earthy, passionate street Salsa, Rachel teaches with a the bucolic English Cotswolds.
