IN VIRTUE of the powers conferred on me by regulation 6A(1) of the Emergency Regulations, 1936,1, ALFRED READE GODWIN-AUSTEN, Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and upon whom His Majesty has conferred the Military Cross, Brigadier and Military Area Commander of the Samaria District, hereby direct that the undermentioned roads in Nablus, shall be closed by being built-up at their northern ends, and shall so remain until further orders. IN VIRTUE of the powers vested in me by the Defence (Military Commanders) Regulations, 1938, and regulation 10 of the Emergency Regulations, 1936, I, JOHN FULLERTON EVETTS, Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Com• mander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, on whom His Majesty has conferred the Military Cross, Brigadier and Military Commander of the areas or places known as the Galilee and Acre District (less the area known as the Jordan Valley), do hereby order that curfew shall be imposed within the town walls of — 100 — Old Acre between the hours of 3 p.m. on 16th January, 1939, to 8 a.m. on 19th January, with two hours break between noon and 2 o'clock on 17th and 18th January, and thereafter between the hours of 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. I further order that curfew shall be imposed within the municipal boundaries of Acre but excluding the Old Town between the hours of 3 p.m. on 16th January to noon on 17th and thereafter between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The order in regard to the municipal area of Acre which was issued on 22nd December, 1938, is hereby modified.     ForMother and Child: Hadassah in the Holy Land, 1913 through 1993 MANFRED WASERMAN, PH.D.* Hadassah's Heritage The two-campus medical center of the Hadassah Medical Organization today provides inpatient and ambulatory services in general medicine and dentistry to the Jerusalem population as well as to patients referred from throughout Israel. Hadassah has pre- ventive care and emergency units, day care and day hospitalization, a hospice for the terminally ill, a national lithotripsy center, a national skin depository, and a national bone bank. It is Israel's leading cancer research and treatment center, a world center for bone marrow transplantation, as well as the only hospital in Israel currently permitted to perform human heart transplants. It has acquired international standing in cardiac surgery for infants, oph- thalmology, treatment of burns, and rehabilitation care. Hadassah provides community and family treatment through neighborhood and outreach health centers. It has 91 outpatient clinics handling some 300,000 annual patient visits, and the two emergency rooms care for an additional 100,000 people. More than 50,000 people are hospitalized each year in Hadassah's medical and surgical depart- ments, and its dental clinics record an annual 100,000 patient visits. In all, Hadassah treats more than 600,000 people a year in its two hospitals and community medical centers. These achievements have their roots in a fascinating combination of American social his- tory and modern public health reform. The Israel travel guide you are reading is a greatly expanded version of one I first prepared for an American friend some two decades ago. In it, I have tried to share my experiences and knowledge of Israel based on a lifetime of study and fifteen visits to the country, most recently in May 2016. I enjoy independent travel, and this guide was written primarily with such travelers in mind, though I hope the information will be helpful to those on group tours as well. As an American, I have produced a guide that, no doubt, reflects that identify and experience. I hope my readers from other countries will forgive that, and still find useful information to help plan their trips. I am not in the travel industry. Rather, I am a labor lawyer who loves Israel passionately and wants to encourage others to travel there and experience this wonderful land. My first visit was in November 1988, and I caught the bug; thus I started visiting every other year or so thereafter, except for 2000-2004, the truly terrible years of the second Palestinian uprising and the terror bombings in Israel cities. Now, with partial retirement, I am going every year (God willing!). Even with the mostly peaceful conditions prevailing since then, some friends still asked, “are you sure you want to go back to Israel?” Of course, recent tensions in Jerusalem, with a wave of stabbing attacks on Israelis, have further increased those anxieties, even for me to some degree.

    My Cousin, Stuart Schoffman, a Supreme Ironist There’s an interesting item by my cousin Stuart Schoffman, published last week in New York’s Jewish Week newspaper (“We’ve Been in This Movie Before“). I try to visit with Stuart every time I’m in Jerusalem. He’s a brilliant writer — a journalist, screenwriter and translator. This piece exemplifies his discursive style, his liberal political perspective and his appreciation for irony: The week after Independence Day, I took the Number 18 bus to the Mahane Yehuda market, to run a few Friday errands. I got off at Davidka Square, where the Street of the Prophets meets Jaffa Road. In the midst of the square is a monument of the 1948 War, displaying a homemade mortar nicknamed “Davidka,” one of six deployed by Jewish fighters; the mortars were notoriously inaccurate but incredibly loud, so much so, the story goes, that Arab forces thought the Jews might have the atomic bomb. It’s been quite a while since we were David and they were Goliath, but we still cherish the myth. In June 2003, a Number 14 bus was blown up in Davidka Square by a Hamas suicide bomber dressed as a charedi Jew: 17 Israelis died. The Israeli Air Force promptly retaliated in Gaza. That was at the height of the second intifada, during which more than 1,000 Israelis and 3,000 Palestinians were killed. In recent years, Arab terrorists in our midst haven’t blown up buses or cafés. (In Jerusalem, we get the occasional stabbing, and lethal attacks on pedestrians by local Palestinians driving tractors and other vehicles.) But we as a nation do experience traumatic eruptions such as last summer’s devastating Gaza war, also known as “Operation Protective Edge.” On this year’s Memorial Day, Israelis grieved for the 67 IDF soldiers killed in that war; and the very next day, we celebrated Israel’s 67th birthday.

A SKETCH OF THE HISTORY OF JESUS’ NAMES IN HEBREW FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE PRESENT ABSTRACT In this article, I propose an overview of the history of the names used for Jesus in Hebrew from the time of the historical Jesus and the early Christian movement to the present. I focus on the role of Jewish and Christian mutual perceptions in shap- ing both the actual ways in which Jesus was named in Hebrew throughout the ages and the conceptions regarding his different Hebrew names. RÉSUMÉ Dans cet article, je propose un aperçu de l’histoire des noms employés pour Jésus en hébreu depuis le temps du Jésus historique et du mouvement chrétien primitif et jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine. The group spread flammable materials throughout it and placed 12 copies of the Holy Qura’an in its midst and then set it on fire. The carpets of the mosque were destroyed while internal tiles went out of its place due to the intense heat caused by the fire. The settlers also wrote on the walls inside the mosque in Hebrew, but they were unable to understand what was written. Maannews (October 4, 2010). • Dozens of Israeli settlers obstructed Palestinian farmers and workers as they attempted to reclaim agricultural land near the Israeli settlement of Neve Daniyyel, illegally built on lands belonging to farmers from Al‐ Khader south of Bethlehem. Armed settlers hurried to stop farmers who brought a bulldozer to reclaim their land. Settlers also threatened to use force if work did not stop. Israeli Occupation forces and civil administration officials arrived on the scene and ordered the farmers to stop work and go to the civil administration offices in Etzion. The area of the land is estimated at 156 dunums and is owned by Ghneim family.
