Tuesday, June 14, 2005 Arrival in Istanbul. Personal pick up at the airport and transfer to Hotel. Guided visit to the important sites of the city. Dinner in typical Turkish Lokanta. Wednesday, June 15 Istanbul – Salonica (~ 630K) Crossing into Greece at Ipsala follow the historical road via Kavala: not far is Philippi the city of Alexander the Great that we will visit. Overnight in Salonica (Thessalonica) the second largest Greek city full of artistic monuments and lively sea promenade. Thursday, June 16, 2005. Salonica – Ioannina (~ 350K) Visit to the famous Meteora, half a dozen monasteries stand perched on top of vertical pillars of rock, one of the most fascinating sights in all of Greece. Overnight in Ioánnina, capital of the Epirus region and once the seat of Ali Pasha, occupies a magnificent site on the edge of Lake Pamvótis. Friday, June 17, 2005. Ioannina- Saranda (~100K) Enter into Albania at Kalpaki and reach the Adriatic Sea shores at Saranda for a visit to the ancient ruins of Butrint, once a prosperous Roman and Byzantine city. Overnight in Saranda. Saturday, June 18, 2005. Saranda – Berat (~ 200K) Along the coastal road, reach Berat the city of thousand windows over the Osum River. Second largest city in Albania has remains going back to the 3rd Century BC. Overnight in Berat. Sunday, June 19, 2005. Berat – Durres (~ 100K) Ancient Dyrrachium was the terminal of the Egnatia Road and it is today a pleasant city with sandy beaches and Roman, Byzantine and Turkish remains. Monday, June 20, 2005. Durres – Tirana (~ 40K) It is a short ride to the Capital of Albania with plenty time to visit the city and sample the best of classical Albanian cuisine. Overnight in Tirana Tuesday, June 21, 2005. Tirana – Cetinje (~ 200K) Via Shkodra, the traditional center of Gheg culture, leave Albania and enter Montenegro with overnight in the ancient capital Cetinje not far away from the Mt. Lovcen that gave the region the name of Black Mountain. Wednesday, June 22, 2005. Cetinje - Dubrovnik (~ 150K) Along the shores of Kotor, southern Europe’s deepest fjord, lay a city under protection of Unesco. Ride along the fjord to enter Croatia and reach Dubrovnik. Thursday, June 23, 2005. Free Day in Dubrovnik. Originally a Venetian port, Dubrovnik (Ragusa) was until the late 17th century one of the great maritime and trading centers of the Mediterranean. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is an entrancing place, encircled by medieval walls and containing a harmonious collection of white-marble renaissance buildings. Most notable are the Rector’s Palace and the cathedral. Friday, June 24, 2005. Dubrovnik – Nis (~ 450K) Entering to Serbia to stop in the old city of Nis, residence of the emperor Constantine and one of the oldest medieval centers in Serbia. Saturday, June 25, 2005. Nis – Plovdiv (~ 300K) Into Bulgaria to stop in the Capital with time sufficient for a brief tour. Ancient in origin, most of today's city dates from around 1900 and is in imperial style, with boulevards named after tsars and patriarchs, and imposing public squares, parks, and gardens. Artistic sights include the neo-Byzantine Orthodox Cathedral of Alexandur Nevsky Memorial Church, the ancient churches of St Petka Samardzhiiska with the Rotunda of St George, and the Banya Bashi mosque, dating from 1576. Our destination Plovdiv will probably be one of the best surprises of the tour. Contemporary of Troy, the City has a magical eternal beauty that made Povdiv Cultural Capital of Europe in 1999. Sunday, June 26, 2005. (~ 400K) Plovdiv – Istanbul An easy day ride crossing into Turkey at the Edirne border and biking on the Thracian plain along the 220 kilometers of modern highway. Arrival in Istanbul and farewell dinner along the Bosphorus. Monday, June 27, 2005. Istanbul. Departure day with pick up from Hotel and transfer to the International Ataturk Airport.
