VETERANS COURT GRADUATION Pictures of the two graduates

Several of our members attended the Henderson Veterans Court Graduation at Judge Stevens court on Thursday, July 19. It was my first opportunity to attend and I have to say that I was beyond impressed. The courtroom was full of veterans from all branches of the service. Judge Stevens called upon one of the vets to lead us in the pledge and then the official song from each branch of the service was played and the vets from each branch stood to be recognized. It was very moving. One of the graduates mentors spoke and then each graduate received a quilt made in their honor, a graduation certificate and a certificate from each Senator’s office. At that time the Judge declared the charges against them dismissed and their files sealed.

The Treatment Court is a very difficult journey. It is open to vets who have committed misdemeanors, not felonies. The vet must apply to be accepted. The program lasts a year and during that time the participant cannot use any alcohol or illegal drugs, they must submit to random drug testing, weekly counseling sessions and frequent court appearances. They incur costs up to $2200.00 over the course of the program for counseling/screening. If at any time the Judge feels they need additional counseling they must accept the Judge’s decision. It is certainly not easy but the graduates were so very happy and grateful to the Judge and the mentors (also vets) who assisted them. This event was very joyful and such a delight to attend. I encourage any who who can make it to go to these graduations to show our support and gratitude to our vets and just because it will make you feel great!
