  • Models of Time Travel
MODELS OF TIME TRAVEL A COMPARATIVE STUDY USING FILMS Guy Roland Micklethwait A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University July 2012 National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science ANU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences APPENDIX I: FILMS REVIEWED Each of the following film reviews has been reduced to two pages. The first page of each of each review is objective; it includes factual information about the film and a synopsis not of the plot, but of how temporal phenomena were treated in the plot. The second page of the review is subjective; it includes the genre where I placed the film, my general comments and then a brief discussion about which model of time I felt was being used and why. It finishes with a diagrammatic representation of the timeline used in the film. Note that if a film has only one diagram, it is because the different journeys are using the same model of time in the same way. Sometimes several journeys are made. The present moment on any timeline is always taken at the start point of the first time travel journey, which is placed at the origin of the graph. The blue lines with arrows show where the time traveller’s trip began and ended. They can also be used to show how information is transmitted from one point on the timeline to another. When choosing a model of time for a particular film, I am not looking at what happened in the plot, but rather the type of timeline used in the film to describe the possible outcomes, as opposed to what happened.

We’ll have a gay ol’ time: transgressive sexuality and sexual taboo in adult television animation By Adam de Beer Thesis Presented for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in Film Studies in the Faculty of Humanities and the Centre for Film and Media Studies UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN UniversityFebruary of 2014Cape Town Supervisor: Associate Professor Martin P. Published by the University of Cape Town (UCT) in terms of the non-exclusive license granted to UCT by the author. University of Cape Town Declaration I declare that this thesis is my own unaided work. It is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Cape Town. It has not been submitted before for any other degree or examination at any other university. Adam de Beer February 2014 ii Abstract This thesis develops an understanding of animation as transgression based on the work of Christopher Jenks. The research focuses on adult animation, specifically North American primetime television series, as manifestations of a social need to violate and thereby interrogate aspects of contemporary hetero-normative conformity in terms of identity and representation. A thematic analysis of four animated television series, namely Family Guy, Queer Duck, Drawn Together, and Rick & Steve, focuses on the texts themselves and various metatexts that surround these series. The analysis focuses specifically on expressions and manifestations of gay sexuality and sexual taboos and how these are articulated within the animated diegesis.

APPENDIX CBSC Decision 10/11-2201 Global re Family Guy (“Stewie B. Goode”) The Complaint The CBSC received the following complaint on July 23, 2011: Hello, I am complaining about a program Family Guy on your cable 211 HD Global TV using extremely adult language definitely not suitable for children. Words such as “porno”, “bitch”, “bastard”, “shaving privates” were used and much more. It was on at 5:00 pm Saturday channel 211 HD on Global TV. I would request that you review this episode called "Peter's Two Dads" [sic, the episode was in fact entitled “Stewie B. Goode”]. I would ask for a prompt reply as this is totally unacceptable. Broadcaster Response Global replied to the complainant with a letter dated August 16: We are in receipt of your letter via the CBSC regarding Global Television's broadcast of Family Guy on Global CHAN-TV on July 23, 2011. In your letter, you expressed concerns about “extremely adult language” used in the program [and] felt the content was inappropriate for the time of day it was broadcast. Let me begin by saying that, as responsible broadcasters, we are sensitive to the members of our viewing audience and we apologize if this program has offended you. I assure you that it is neither Global's nor the producer's intention to do so. Under the Broadcasting Act, broadcasters are required to provide a broad spectrum of entertainment and information programming for “men, women and children of all ages, interests and tastes.” Television programming is required to be diverse and appealing to a wide range of audiences.

Creative Commons License The Death and Resurrection of Brian Griffin 1 The Death and Resurrection of Brian Griffin Brett Mills 1 What kinds of stories does American television tell about the death of animals? How are such deaths represented, and in what kinds of television do they appear? How are audiences positioned in relation to those deaths, and therefore what responses are viewers encouraged to have? And what does the representation of animal death tell us about American culture more broadly, and its relationships with animals more specifically? This essay uses a single case study to unpack how these questions might be answered, as a starting-point for reflection on American culture’s use of animal death within the framework of storytelling in popular media. My article maintains that the representation of animal death in television is significant because it tells us something about both humans’ understanding of death and the use (symbolic and otherwise) of animals in contemporary American culture.
