Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the New Croft for today’s home league game against Woodbridge Town who I would like to welcome to Haverhill and hope you have a safe journey home after the game. Well after going 5 months of no football we are now seeing games coming thick and fast as we’ve been faced with constant Saturday and midweek games that ultimately puts pressure on the playing squad as well as the volunteers who look after the logistics of ensuring matches can go ahead with the added measures in place round Health and Safety. With this in mind I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those club members and volunteers who are stepping up to the plate as I’ve been impressed with the professionalism you are demonstrating in supporting the club and ensuring we are adhering to the guidelines provided to us by the FA. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you the supporters for getting behind the team so far this season as you have played a massive part in getting behind the team and creating a great atmosphere that was evident again last week in our exciting victory of higher league Wisbech Town that I’m sure provided you with some great entertainment. The FA cup is obviously massive for the club due to its financial rewards and it would be great to see you all getting behind the boys again this Tuesday evening when we entertain higher league Moulden and Tiptree in a repeat fixture of our 2018 cup run where we managed a victory so fingers crossed for history repeating itself. These cup games are fantastic for the club but it’s also very challenging for the playing squad as the extra big games are resulting in us having to run and rotate a large squad as we have to deal with a good number of injuries and general fatigue that have affected our away league form. Marc has to introduce constant change to the team in some of these games to compensate for wear and tear on the players and with a good number of new players in the squad, it will take time for them to adjust and learn the methods required to win games especially on the road. Today will be an exiting game to watch as Woodbridge have been a good side over the last few seasons and I’m sure with our boys wanting a good response from our midweek defeat, we should be in for a very competitive game today. In 1988/89 the Suffolk and Ipswich League Senior Division Championship was won under the management of Bill Riseborough, and it was during this season that Woodbridge applied for membership to the expanding Eastern Counties League. Town were duly accepted into Division One of the Jewson League and for the first season, 1989/90, home games were played at Kingston Field. During the three previous years negotiations had been taking place to secure a new ground and in March 1990 work began on the pitch, changing rooms and clubhouse facilities at Notcutts Park. In September that year Town moved to the new ground and the official opening in October was marked by a floodlit friendly against an Arsenal XI, which attracted a crowd of around 3,000. After managing Woodbridge to respectable mid-table positions in their first two Jewson League seasons, Bill Riseborough resigned in March 1991 and was replaced by Dave Dixon and Les Simmons who steered the team to third place in each of their first two seasons, missing out on promotion in 1992/93 on goal difference. Consolation came with another Suffolk Senior Cup Final victory by defeating Stonham Aspal 5-3. The 1993/94 season was one of Woodbridge’s most memorable so far. By finishing runners- up in Division One the Club achieved promotion to the Premier Division, and further successes came via the retention of the Suffolk Senior Cup, the Harwich Charity Cup and the Churchman Cup. Woodbridge also became the first Division One side to win the Jewson League Cup by beating Chatteris Town 2-0 in the final. Having gained promotion, Town finished in a respectable tenth position under the guidance firstly of Dave Dixon and then, following his resignation, by Malcolm MacKenzie, whilst 1995/96 saw further improvement when fifth place was achieved and the final of the Suffolk Premier Cup was reached for the first time, although after two goalless games Bury Town lifted the trophy following a penalty shootout. In 1996/97 the last 32 of the F.A. Vase was reached for the first time and the Harwich Charity Cup was won for the third time in five seasons. Towards the end of the season Malcolm MacKenzie resigned as Manager and was succeeded by ex-Town striker David Hubbick. In his first season in charge Hubbick guided Woodbridge to their second Jewson League Cup triumph, defeating Warboys Town 4-2 in the final, and also presided over The Woodpeckers’ best F.A. Cup run so far, reaching the Third Qualifying Round before losing to Solihull Borough. Town’s F.A. Vase hopes were ended by AFC Lymington in the last 64, and after enjoying a promising run in the New Year, Woodbridge faded to finish twelfth in the league. For much of the 1998/99 campaign Woodbridge remained in the relegation zone, before finally finishing safely in 19th position, but they provided their followers with some memorable moments in reaching the quarter-final of the F.A. Vase for the first time. A record crowd of 1,051 gathered at Notcutts Park but after a tense and goalless ninety minutes Woodbridge went out of the competition as Thame United struck with two goals in extra-time. The following season saw a dramatic improvement, with the team ending the campaign in seventh position, and once again the F.A. Vase provided plenty of excitement. Three wins preceded a defeat in the last sixteen trip at Ramsgate, and for the second year running Woodbridge had the honour of being the last remaining Jewson League club left in the competition. In 2000/01, Town finished in seventh position for the second consecutive season, and reached the Third Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup for the second time. The following season, after a slow start, the team recovered well to finish in eighth place, at one stage putting together a sequence of just two defeats in twenty matches, but 2002/03 was much more traumatic. Relegation back to the First Division was a constant threat, and in February Dave Hubbick’s six-year tenure as Manager was terminated. Carl David, Marty Thorpe and Craig Oldfield took charge for the remaining matches, and a tremendous run of six wins and a draw in the last seven games not only secured survival on the last day of the season, but also enabled the team to lift the Harwich Charity Cup. Success was also brought to the Club by Daniel Frost’s Under 15s, who regained the Suffolk County Minor Cup after a gap of 78 years. Immediately after the last league match, a new management team of Colwyn Rowe and Gary Barker was appointed, but once more the club battled against the threat of relegation, until another sensational run of seven consecutive wins ensured survival in the penultimate match of the season. Following Colwyn Rowe’s move to Heybridge Swifts, in May 2004, the Club appointed former Ipswich Town legend Mick Stockwell as manager; Mick immediately embarked on a rebuilding programme which, in conjunction with a thriving and developing youth structure, was intended to bring long-term success and stability to Notcutts Park. A significant number of young players broke through into the First Team squad, and acquitted themselves very well. In Mick’s time with the club, the Harwich Charity Cup was brought back at the end of the 2005/06 season and we made good strides forward away from the relegation zone. Mick resigned in 2007 following a ninth place finish in 2006-07 and a brand new management team of Glenn Read, Andy Lawrence and Sean Thacker were appointed from within. The 2008-09 season began with a new Chairman at the helm with John Beecroft taking over from Keith Dixon who served the club for over sixty years as player, Secretary and for the past three decades as Chairman, A period that saw the club rise from the second division of the Ipswich & District League to the Eastern Counties League Premier Division. In February the club appointed Christian Appleford to replace Glenn Read who resigned his post as the club hovered perilously near the foot of the table but an 18th position was achieved to ensure survival. At the beginning of 2009-10 Mark Scopes took charge and began rebuilding an under strength squad. We flirted with relegation once again but a flourish in March and April earned enough points to rise clear of Wivenhoe Town and away from the threat of relegation. After an inauspicious start in 2010-11 the team prospered to finish in a creditable 10th position. This was again improved in 2011-12 with the club finishing in 6th place, the club's highest finish since 1995-96. This season in 2012-13 the club embarks on its eighteenth consecutive year of Eastern Counties Football as the longest serving member of the Eastern Counties (Thurlow Nunn) Premier Division, with Mark Scopes starting his fourth season in charge assisted by club stalwart Marty Thorpe. The 2013-14 was a turbulent season for us which saw a number of senior players leave and after a poor start both Mark and Marty resigned from their positions, Sean Clements and Louis Newman took over the reins on a caretaker basis until Lee Elliston was appointed as our new manager. Although Lee recruited a number of players and performances started to improve, he was unable to prevent relegation thus ending our stay in the Premier Division. August 2014 saw us with a new manager in place, Jamie Scales, a local lad who played for the club taking over from Lee Elliston who returned to manage his previous club. Jamie was aware from the start that this would a difficult challenge but could see it as a chance to rebuild and more importantly try to steady the team whilst working without a player’s budget. Over the course of his five years in charge results and performances have improved seeing us continue to improve our final league position each season. Following a fourth place First Division finish in 2016-17, the 2017-18 season was a remarkably successful, completing a magnificent double of winning both the Eastern Counties First Division title, thus securing promotion back into the Premier Division, along with winning the Suffolk FA Senior cup. Season 2018-19, the club secured its highest ever finish in the Eastern Counties League, finishing in second place in the Premier Division. Last season 2019-20, Jamie and Assistant Manager Carlos Edwards managed to keep the entire squad together and consolidated our position in the Premier Division.

www.pitchero.com/clubs/haverhillroversfc Match Report v Goody

HAVERHILL ROVERS 1 v 1 GODMANCHESTER ROVERS In front of an enthusiastic crowd of 126 spectators Rovers embarked on their first home league game against their visitors from Cambridgeshire. Last season before the records were controversially expunged we had enjoyed two victories against this opponent winning 2-0 away & a surprise 6-2 win at home with the now departed John Palmer notching a hat trick on the day. Rovers started slowly, as they had in their two first games of this season, conceding a very early goal with the defence giving their opponents far too much room and the unmarked Chandler ran on unchallenged, on the right wing, to slot clinically past stranded goalkeeper Philp for the lead in under 3 minutes. Godmanchester continued to pressure the home defence and succeeded in gaining several corners during the first 20 minutes & forcing Philp into a succession of brilliant & reactionary saves again from the dangerous Chandler & Hyem. Although for the most part in the half the visitors were the more dominant, Rovers Aaron Hudson was a constant threat with his penetrating crosses but with the end products unfortunately being absent. The best chance being skied over the bar when scoring seemed easier. Youngster Tom Stoker was however on the end of another of Hudson’s superb crosses & looped his header over the static visitors keeper Conroy and Into the waiting net for the equaliser into added time in the half. There was however still time for yet another great save by Philp from a rasping shot from Allen to preserve the status quo at the interval. The second half saw the home team begin without the services of Alfie Carroll due to an injury sustained towards the end of the first half & Dan Olive duly subbed. Rovers came out from the interval in the next gear and saw a much more needed lively & positive performance with Tom Stoker, Ben Bradley & Ryan Gibbs showing their true colours with aggressive & penetrating play forcing the visitors into some frenetic defending & with goalkeeper Conroy showing his class & experience with some fine saves. Haverhill, with a hitherto totally clean disciplinary record this season then received two yellow cards in the space of three minutes for Rider & Bradley as the match gained renewed momentum, with both sides looking for the winner. Keepers at both ends were outstanding and were key in maintaining the scoreline and despite the visitors making all three of their substitutions both defences held firm and the game ended justifiably as a 1-1 draw and a hard earned first league point for the home side. As a footnote the game was played in a very sporting manner notwithstanding fair physical encounter and was very well controlled & marshalled throughout by all three officials. My man of the match was Aaron Hudson – tireless energy, great ‘tekkers’ & dangerous crosses throughout.

www.pitchero.com/clubs/haverhillroversfc Saturday’s League & FA C up Round-Up

We start our look at the Premier Division games last Saturday at Stanway Rovers who welcomed Kirkley & Pakefield, and what a game it was with Kirkley edging it by the odd goal in 5 to move to the top of the table. Kirkley’s goals coming from Daniel Conroy after 20 minutes and then two in the second half one each for Kyle Haylock and Cameron Russell. Stanway’s marksmen were Matthew Wooldridge and substitute Max Sherlock, to make matters worse for the home team they had Tyler Kemp dismissed. We then travel to Plantation Park where Norwich United welcome Woodbridge Town and would have been delighted to gain three points with a 2-1 home win in front of 122 spectators. Louis Mason- Henman scored the first for United with Matty Daniels getting their second from the penalty spot before half-time. The Woodpeckers pulled one back in the second-half through Andrew Crowe, they also had Liam scopes dismissed. Walsham Le Willows got their first league win of the season with a hard fought 3-2 away win at Godmanchester Rovers. The Willows scorers were Charlie Newman, Jamie Smith and substitute Kieran Twinn. Matt Matallan had given Goddy a halftime lead, but Walsham then scored two early in the second half but it was that man Matallan who equalised for Goddy before Walsham hit the winner late on. Hadleigh United made the trip into Norfolk on Saturday and will have enjoyed the journey home after beating Swaffham Town 3-2. The home team had Nick Castellan and William Smith on the scoresheet with Maxwell Dinnell, Joseph Yaxley and substitute Gavin Vanoene scoring for the Brettsiders. That results leaves Swaffham rooted to the bottom of the table. All other matches involving Premier Division teams were in the Emirates F.A. Cup extra Preliminary Round. Whitton United put in a fantastic effort away at Isthmian North team Dereham Town losing by the odd goal in 5, Whitton had their goalkeeper carried off in the 3rd minute with a serious leg break, we wish him a speedy recovery. Asa milliard and Thomas Warren scored Whitton’s goals at Aldiss Park. Ely City will be in the next round after a comprehensive 3-1 home win over Eynesbury Rovers with the ‘Robins’ goals coming from Harvey Bullinana, Josh Townsend and Jordan Fisher. FC Clacton and Hadley played out 1 1-1 draw and it took the 19th penalty in the shoot out to separate the teams, but thankfully it was FC Clacton who progressed with a 10-9 penalty shoot out win. Clacton’s goal in the 90 minutes came from Charlie Durling. Brantham Athletic’s good form continues with a 1-0 away win at Istmian North Team Great Wakering Rovers, the all important goal coming from the head of Jack Marshall. Another high scoring encounter took place at Haverhill where the ‘Rovers’ put 4 past Wisbech Town with the visitors scoring 3 of their own. Ben Bradley scored twice with Joseph Rider and Daniel Toyer also getting on the scoresheet. Long Melford’s game at home to Kempston Rovers ended goalless but Melford went through winning the penalty shoot out 4-2. Mildenhall Town and Corby could also not be separated during 90 minutes with the game ending 1-1, again Mildenhall progressed by winning the penalty shoot out 4-3.

Emirates F.A. Cup Round-Up

The eight Thurlow Nunn League teams remaining in the FA Cup have managed to avoid each other in the draw for the First Qualifying Round, but it is unlikely that any of them will be favourites to win their ties when they kick off on Tuesday 22nd September. FC Clacton, Long Melford, Brantham Athletic and Wroxham all face Step 3 sides. Wroxham’s opponents, Royston Town, knocked out Newmarket Town 6-0 on Saturday. Stowmarket Town, Haverhill Rovers and Ely City have all been drawn against Step 4 opposition. Haverhill Rovers entertain Maldon & Tiptree, who had a great cup run last season, including eliminating Leyton Orient. Mildenhall Town are the only one of our clubs to meet a Step 5 side, but they are away from home – at Spartan South Midlands Leighton Town. Brantham Athletic v. St Ives Town Cambridge City v. Having gained promotion two years in succession this opening fixture for Rovers against our near neighbours was always going to be a test at this higher step level.

EASTERN REGION WOMEN'S FOOTBALL LEAGUE - DIVISION ONE NORTH HAVERHILL ROVERS LADIES 0 v 4 NEWMARKET TOWN LADIES Despite the score line I’m sure the watching spectators would agree that the visitors took their chances whilst unfortunately Rovers squandered theirs. The first 30 minutes saw Rovers mostly on top have a penalty brilliantly saved by Dominika Szary on 14 minutes, a blazing shot from Jenna Wright rattling the crossbar minutes later, another cracking shot on 20 minutes hitting the post again from Jenna Wright which rebounded to the unsuspecting Julie Brown who could only guide it just wide of the post on the other side. At that point Newmarket were pleased to hear the referee call for a water break and the Rovers momentum was halted. On 30 minutes it all started to go wrong for the home side. First, an inch perfect pass found Lacey Andrews who in a one on one with Rovers keeper Sophie Baxter managed to toe poke her effort into the far corner for the lead. 2 minutes later it was 0-2 when Sillitoe smashed home through a forest of legs. There was then a series of lengthy hold ups as both Julie Brown and Beth Harding received treatments for injuries before another defence splitting pass found Cuthbert who coolly slotted home the 3rd goal just before the interval. There was a series of roll on roll off substitutions from Rovers as they strived to narrow the score line but it wasn’t to be as ex Rover Hannah Doyle delivered the ‘coup de grace’ with Newmarket’s fourth and it was effectively game over. The ladies heads never dropped and Newmarket keeper Dom Szary made a great strong handed save from Nichole Beasley and then another missed chance when Stacey Roper sent in an in-swinging corner which unfortunately evaded everybody and another chance missed. The busy Sian Cottrell latched on to a superb through ball from Beasley again but was thwarted by Szary again. Cottrell was adjudged frustratingly and dubiously offside a few minutes later and did eventually get the ball in the net at the very end only again for it to be nullified by a another decision – pity we don’t have VAR really. All in all, it shouldn’t really have been a 4-0 margin and if we take our chances on offer in future games we should be okay at this level. SQUAD: Sophie Baxter (GK), Ella Blowes, Beth Harding, Charlotte Westrope ,Julie Brown,Kat Upton, Nicky Andrews, Stacey Roper, Jenna Wright, Georgia England, Sophie Jeffers, Nichole Beasley, Sian Cottrell, Selma Haller, Charlotte Roach. Our Very Own History In Brief

Haverhill Rovers were founded in 1886, but their beginnings are shrouded in some mystery. The club first started playing at Hamlet Croft in 1913; previously they played at Seven Acres, an area bordered on two sides by the old railway line and Wratting Road. They spent the 1908/09 season in the East Anglian League. Other clubs in that league at that time included Clacton Town and Halstead Town. At the start of the 1924/25 season Rovers joined the Essex & Suffolk Border League but, after finishing bottom at the end of the 1927/28 season, elected to leave that league. Eight years later, in the 1935/36 season, Rovers rejoined the Border League. In 1946/47, Rovers were runners up behind Colchester Casuals; however, the following year Rovers won not only the championship but also the Knock Out Cup, beating Brightlingsea United 1-0 in the final. In 1950/51 Rovers were runners up behind Stowmarket Town. In 1962/63 they won the league for the second time, retaining the title the following year, when they also won the Knock Out Cup again to record their second “double”. In 1964 Rovers joined the Eastern Counties League, finishing a creditable sixth in their first season and also winning the League Cup, defeating Stowmarket Town. The following year, Rovers again reached the final of the cup, but lost out to Lowestoft Town. Rovers finished in the bottom three every year from 1970 until 1977. In 1978, under the guidance of former player Roger Staples, Rovers were champions for the first and, so far, only time, pipping Great Yarmouth Town by one point. A crowd of 1,300, a record at the time, packed into Hamlet Croft to see the last game, the decider, against Chatteris Town. Unfortunately this proved to be a one off, as the following season saw them finish in the lower half of the table. After this the club made steady progress: 7th in 1989, 14th in 1990 and an excellent 4th in 1991, the first full season under manager Martin Murray. A glut of injuries at the start of 1991/92 meant a final placing of eighth. In 1988 Rovers reached the final of the League Cup for the fourth time, losing to Braintree Town. In national competitions Rovers have never reached the first round of the FA Cup, but reached the 6th Round (Quarter Finals) of the FA Vase in 1986/87, losing 3-1 at home to Warrington Town. The attendance on that day was 1,578, which broke the previous record attendance. The club has never won the Suffolk Premier Cup, losing in the final twice, in 1965/66 2-1 to Bury Town and in 1990/91 3-2 to Stowmarket Town. They have lifted the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup three times. Rovers won the East Anglian Cup in 1990/91, beating Eynesbury Rovers 2-1 at Eynesbury in the final. Season 1995/96 saw Rovers relegated for the first time in their long history, but this disappointment was sweetened by winning the Suffolk Senior Cup for the first time (at Portman Road) at the end of the 1996/97 season. They were also defeated finalists in the Jewson League Cup, losing 2-0 at Harwich & Parkeston. 1997 saw Rovers win the Suffolk Senior Cup after they defeated Ipswich Wanderers 4-1 at Portman Road. They are also the only team to have lifted the First Division Knock Out Trophy three times (2-1 after extra time against Needham Market in 2001, 2-0 against Kirkley in 2004 and 3-1 against Saffron Walden Town in 2007). An excellent run in the FA Cup three seasons ago for Rovers included their best result in the past few years when, in the Second Round Qualifying in front of 504 spectators, they defeated Eastbourne Borough 1-0 on 30th September. Eastbourne were in the Conference South at the time, a huge four divisions above Rovers, but a goal by striker Paul Shaw three minutes into added time at the end of the game was enough to see them through and invoke a roar that was heard all around the town. This was then followed two rounds later with Aldershot Town, who were in the Conference, coming to the Croft in the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round.
