From The Vice-Chairman

Good afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Newmarket Town. I’m sure it will be a tough game as they always have been over the years! I’m sure a lot of teams will have taken note of an impressive start for The Jockeys with maximum points from the first two games and progression in The FA Cup. Our league form has seen a win and a loss and it was another defeat against Step 4 Corby Town in The FA Cup last week. The score really doesn’t tell the story as we took a depleted squad and battled so hard. If the lads take some of that passion into the league we’ll soon be collecting some wins. I have always enjoyed my visits to Newmarket playing, managing and supporting with Woodbridge and also scoring but let’s not go into that. I must say how superb the club looks now with its 4G pitch and the clubhouse facilities are also great with fantastic staff who always make you feel welcome, and let’s not forget to mention they make you miss your train home. We’ll look forward to our trip there in March. Let’s hope for a good game for everyone to enjoy and a safe journey home for The Newmarket contingent. Paul Leech - Vice chairman Introducing Our Match Sponsor

Homestyle have been in business since 1999 and have grown to be one of the biggest local window & door companies in the area. The company was started by Graham Shemmings and now all his family are involved in running the business to make them a truly local family business. They have sponsored the club for over two years, building and supplying the dugouts for the main pitch in 2019 and further to this they supplied new windows for the club house earlier in the year. They have also joined our members discount scheme, where a 5% discount can be obtained on showing a valid club membership card when purchasing and having work carried out by them. Many of you know Graham being Woodbridge born and bred and for his time as a member of the board some twenty years ago our best wishes go to him at this time as he recovers from major surgery in July. A big thank you to everyone at Homestyle!

A Birds Eye View - By John Middleditch

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our second home match of the new season against Newmarket Town, The Jockeys progressed to the next round of the FA Cup with a win at Wellingborough on Saturday. As Norwich United progressed in their FA Cup match, our trip to Blofield has been rescheduled for the 5th of March 2022. Our first league match resulted in a 1-0 away win at Ely City, Luke Mallett's well taken goal the difference between the two sides and a first 3 points of the season for the Woodpeckers. We lost our first home match of the season against Brantham Athletic 2-0, against a well organised away side, a wonder goal after only 4 minutes and the same player scored in the last minute to clinch the three points. We travelled to Corby Town last week in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round, losing 3-1 but after leading for 86 minutes their substitutes made the difference in the latter stages. Callum Sinclair's sublime finish after 6 minutes opened the scoring and superb defending in particular from Alfie, Rhys and Liam. I lost count of how many corners the home side had in the game but without several squad members a superb effort from all 11 players who started the match who should be very proud of their efforts from start to finish. I travelled on the Coach and had a great day and even met their club mascot, surely a sign of a big club!! I was very impressed with their facilities, in particular their clubhouse which I'm sure which was also a nightclub and had no less than 13 large screen TVs. I'd just like to thank all of their staff etc who were so welcoming and looked after us so well throughout the day. Will mention no names but one of our supporters wasn't too well on our return but I understand he’s ok now!! It was good to see so many of our fans and The Chairman and Vice-Chairman present on the Coach and at the game against a team from Step 4 and managed by ex-Forest professional Gary Mills who played for one of my great heroes Brian Clough, I had the pleasure of meeting the great man once and got his book signed at although he didn't say "Hello young Man". Enjoy the Match "THE SCRIBE" Saturday’s F.A. Cup Round-Up

The Emirates F.A. Cup took centre stage last Saturday with all the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division playing in the Extra Preliminary Round. We will start our round-up at Arlesey Town where Thetford Town were the visitors and in a game full of chances it was Arlesey who progressed into the next round with a narrow 4 -3 victory. Nathan Clarke, Bernardo Felgueiras and Ryan Fuller were the scores for Thetford. It was an all Thurlow Nunn league match at Brantham who welcomed ‘The Greens’ of Gorleston and again the match was ahigh scoring affair with the home team edging it 4-3. Louie Bloom got a brace and there was one each for Matthew Hayden and James Lee for The Imps with Christy Finch, Connor Ingram and Joel Watts notching for Gorleston. March Town United made the trip to Bugbrooke St Michaels and came away on the wrong end of a 4-2 scoreline. Harri Clark and Brody Warren got on the scoresheet for The Hares’. Woodbridge Town had a tough looking draw away at Corby Town and so it proved. The woodpeckers going down 3-1 against a good home team, Callum Sinclair scoring the first goal of the game for Woodbridge. Another all Thurlow Nunn League match took place at The Daly Group Stadium at Fakenham where the only goal of the game was scored in the first 5 minutes against Ely City from the penalty spot, after Jack Guyton had been upended when going through on goal, Jordan Attree stepped up and slammed home the penalty. Hadleigh United welcomed Desborough Town and will have been delighted with a solid 2-0 home win, Harry Brown and Joel Glover were the Brettsiders scorers on the day. Mildenhall Town had an excellent 1-0 win at home to Premier Division opposition in the form of Wroxham. Natty Stewart getting the all important winner in the 60th minute. Norwich United will have been delighted to get their first win of the season beating Long Buckby 2-1. An Own Goal by Long Buckby and a good strike from Max Melanson was the difference in the two teams. Walsham Le Willows also travelled to take on Swaffham town but the journey home would have been an enjoyable one after the away team progressed into the next round with a 3-0 win, a brace for Jamie Smith and one for Scott McGavin eased Walsham to the next round. Newmarket Town made the trip to Wellingborough and returned home in the hat after a 3-1 victory. The scorers for ‘The Jockeys’ James Hall with two and Sam Gomarsall. Haverhill Rovers made the longish trip to Cogenhoe United and both teams could not be separated as the game finished goalless, although both teams had numerous chances to get the all important winners, the replay was on Wednesday. Another match to end in a draw took place at Kempston Rovers where Whitton United shared a 1-1 draw with their hosts. On Tuesday Whitton progressed after a 2-1 win. The same scoreline took place at Kirkley & Pakefield where fellow league team Long Melford held them to a 1-1 draw the replay being on Wednesday night. Two more league teams could not be separated this time it was Lakenheath and Mulbarton Wanderers who both could take some positives out of a entertaining 2-2 draw. Elliott Altay and Tom Baird both scoring for the away team. In the Replay on Tuesday Mulbarton went through 3-1 in an ill tempered match with Lakenheath finishing the match with 9 men and also one of their players in hospital, the game was delayed for over an hour whilst Lakenheath’s Craig Nurse received treatment before heading to Hospital, we wish him a speed recovery. That rounds up the F.A. Cup action.

On This Day In History

Woodbridge Town have played seven matches on the date of 14th of August, winning on five occasions. The first outing on this day was a pre- season friendly in 1948 with Woodbridge returning from R.A.F. Felixstowe with an emphatic 7-0 victory. Thirty four years later in 1982 Town lost 2-0 in a friendly at Anglian Combination League Newton Flotman. Dexys Midnight Runners topped the UK charts with Come on Eileen on the day that the first ever Compact Disk was produced in Germany. On 14th August 1999 Town opened their sixth Jewson League Premier Division campaign with a victory at Notcutts Park over Mildenhall Town. Goals from Mark Taylor and Carl David and two own goals helped Town to a 4-1 win that saw them open the season at the top of the table. The first home fixture of the 2007-08 season was played on Tuesday 14th August with a brace of goals from Allicion Blake and another from Ben Seaman helping Town to a 3-0 victory over Walsham Le Willows. Three years later Town made the short trip to Brantham Athletic to contest the Extra Preliminary Round of the F.A. Cup. Aaron Churchyard scored twice for the Woodpeckers but the 4-2 defeat was the third of nine consecutive first round defeats in the competition. On the same day, Ipswich Town played their first home fixture of their seventh season in the EFL Championship. Skipper David Norris gave Ipswich a 86th minute lead against Burnley but the Clarets grabbed an equaliser two minutes into stoppage time. Two years later on the evening of Tuesday 14th August Town returned from F.C. Clacton with a 2-1 victory courtesy of the same goalscorers of five seasons previous, Allicion Blake and Ben Seaman. Our final and most recent fixture ‘On this Day’ will be remembered well by those supporters that travelled on the coach on a Tuesday evening in 2018 to Clapton F.C. for an F.A. Cup Extra Preliminary Round replay. Three days earlier Town had fought back after trailing 2-0 in the first encounter at Notcutts Park with a 76th minute goal from Callum Sinclair and George Bowman earning a replay scoring from a free kick in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Town travelled to the capital for the replay on Tuesday 14th August with just eleven of the first team squad available and fell behind in the second minute but a header from Taylor Southgate levelled the score two minutes into the second half. With the score still level after 120 minutes Woodbridge commenced their first ever F.A. Cup penalty shoot out. Alfie Stronge gave Woodbridge the advantage diving to his left to save Clapton's first effort. Liam Scopes made the score 2-0 to Woodbridge sending his effort into the right corner. A well placed Clapton effort into the top right of the goal made it 2-1 and after Carlos Edwards effort for Woodbridge ended well over the crossbar, Clapton levelled the score to 2-2. The final four penalties were all well converted with Kelsey Trotter hitting the top right corner and keeper Alfie Stronge successfully opting for power over placement. In the first of the sudden death penalties, Town skipper Sean Rea sent the keeper the wrong way leaving Stronge the task of saving to win the tie, which he duly did, sending the Woodpeckers into the next round and the travelling support into raptures. Newmarket Town Football Club was formed on the 22nd November 1877 in what was the then Star Hotel in Newmarket’s Town Centre. They initially played on the heath, until moving to Cricket Field Road in 1885; the first game at the new pitch was played on 21 October 1885 versus Bury School. In 1920 the club won the Cambridgeshire Senior League and the Cambridgeshire Senior Cup. They moved into the Bury and District League, which they won in 1926–27. The club then moved into the Suffolk and Ipswich League, winning the title in 1931–32, 1932–33 and 1933–34, and picking up the Suffolk Senior Cup the following season. In 1937 the club was admitted to the Eastern Counties League. The club finished bottom during the 1937– 38 season, but was not demoted, as the league was expanded from 10 to 13 clubs. During World War II, Stan Mortensen, later of England and Blackpool fame, played for the club as a guest player. The record attendance of 2,701 for Newmarket Town was recorded in an FA cup first round qualifying match against Abbey United (now better known as Cambridge United) in 1949. Following the war, the club finished bottom for five consecutive seasons, and eventually left the league at the end of the 1951–52 season, in which they had lost all 34 matches and finished with a goal difference of -151. They dropped into the Peterborough and District League. After winning it in 1957–58, they returned to the ECL in 1959. During the 1990s the club saw a period of success in the Suffolk Premier Cup, winning the trophy in 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1999. They were relegated at the end of the 2007–08 season but in 2008–09 the club won Division One, and were promoted back to the Premier Division. They were relegated again in 2011–12 but returned to the Premier Division after finishing second the following season. They won the League Challenge Cup in 2013-14. The closest the club has come to equalling this record attendance set in 1949 was during the summer of 2016 when the old grass pitch was ripped up, levelled and the state of the art 3G pitch was laid. To commemorate this momentus occasion in the clubs history Newmarket hosted a pre- season friendly against Cambridge United that drew a crowd of 1,827. The excellent facility available today is the first cork-based 3G pitch of its kind in England. Cork is environmentally friendly, sustainable, does not contain any heavy metals and more importantly does not give off the fumes associated with the health risks of rubber crumb pitches. During the recent close season our clubhouse underwent extensive renovation and now provides the towns only sports bar and hopefully the premium place to watch live sport in the area, as well as being a fantastic facility for parents and friends to relax in whilst watching their child train and play. Over the 2021/22 season we are going to print a series of articles by the author of the book ‘A History and Guide to Football Programmes’ describing how programmes have changed over a century-and-a-half of . We hope you find the articles interesting and you will see how much the football programme is a part of our football life.

Nineteenth Century Teamsheets The first ever football programme is probably lying undetected in an old suitcase in an attic; or lining an antique cutlery drawer; or it may be displayed in one of the football museums which are springing up at clubs around the country. Quite frankly, we do not know with certainty which was the first ever fixture to have a team -sheet printed and distributed to spectators, but we can take a pretty educated guess at how it looked. The purpose of the earliest programmes was to identify the players and advise spectators of forthcoming fixtures. There were no team numbers on the backs of Victorian football shirts, but players did sometimes have distinguishing features, whether in the colour of their stockings, or the type of cap or cowl they wore. Certainly, there were well defined formations - firstly 2-2-6 and then 2-3-5 - and spectators were able to identify the players from the positions they took up on the field, which corresponded to the formation in which their names were printed on the teamsheet. Thus for the match between Queen’s Park and The Wanderers on 9th October 1875, the home team’s “Centre Back-up” (centre half) C. Herriot was to wear a “Black and white cap - no stocking” while C.W. Alcock, the Wanderers Captain and Centre would wear a “Cap - blue and white chequers”. The front of this card would be recognisable as a programme / team sheet today - it had the teams, referee and umpires and fixture details. If there was printing on the reverse, it would likely be a fixture list, perhaps incorporating results to date, and details of forthcoming fixtures. When Heart of Midlothian visited Royal Arsenal at Plumstead on 30th March 1891, the large single sheet had match details and team selections on one side, and on the reverse was printed a poem which served as the welcome to the visitors. At the foot of the page were four small advertisements for local traders. In April 1893, at the Ardwick Ground, Hyde Road, Manchester (home of the club which evolved as Manchester City) Bolton Wanderers and Newton Heath (now Manchester United) contested a Manchester Senior Cup Final and the team sheet, sold for 1d, listed the teams with spaces to record the result and goalscorers. As the game developed around the turn of the century, so did its programmes, and as football left the Victorian age, match programmes assumed some of the familiar features by which we recognise them today.
