Readers’ comments

The police this week urged residents not to have their car windows repaired if they are victims of smash and grabs or if something was stolen out of their cars until police have had a chance to inspect the car. Rekord posed the following questions to its readers on social media: Have you been Photo: Hassan OUAJBIR from Pexels the victim of this kind of crime? Did you repair your car before or after reporting it to the police? Were they able to open a case and investigate the matter promptly? Do you think it is fair to have to wait for them to investigate if your car has been damaged? Here is what they had to say:

Sonia Smith-Pienaar: Our car was broken into at our complex on Monday, 10 August (a public holiday). We tried the whole day to get the police to open a case as we were informed that no-one was allowed at the station. Offi cers only turned up the next day. They took our statement, promising that the fi ngerprint guys would be out later the same day. We’re still waiting for them. On Friday, 14 August, an inspector arrived to look at the damage. We showed him video footage and his response was we don’t have fi ngerprints or any way to identify the criminal, so the case will be closed. Obviously we repaired the window a day after the incident.

Francois Jors Pienaar: In July 2020, thieves broke into my storeroom in a complex and stole power tools. A day later my wife saw that my power tools were being sold on Facebook. We informed the Moot SAPS which only came out two days later. They had any excuse in the book not to open a case as “there was no evidence”. But I had all the evidence, screenshots, name of the people selling my stuff as well as where they stay. This was not good enough. They said that I must make an appointment to buy the stuff and then call them. I pay their salaries with my taxes and then have to do their work also.

Valentine Fouché: Oh, please. I’ve had my car window smashed more than fi ve times over the past seven years. I’ve had to drive to the police station to report the case each time with the shattered window and only ONCE did the offi cer on duty actually come outside to inspect the car. That was it – no fi ngerprints were taken. The only reason I even bothered was for insurance purposes. www.rekordeast.co.za/property 23 OCTOBER 2020 9 How to survive on just one salary Living on a single income is a “If the homeowners have ¡Apply challenge that some couples taken out an access bond, they NOW !
