    Forthcoming in: Irina Livezeanu, Arpad von Klimo (eds), The Routledge History of East Central Europe since 1700 (Routledge 2015) Women‘s and Gender History1 Krassimira Daskalova and Susan Zimmermann Since the 1980s, historians working on East Central Europe, as on other parts of the world, have shown that historical experience has been deeply gendered. This chapter focuses on the modern history of women, and on gender as a category of analysis which helps to make visible and critically interrogate ―the social organization of sexual difference‖2. The new history of women and gender has established, as we hope to demonstrate in this contribution, a number of key insights. First, gender relations are intimately related to power relations. Gender, alongside dominant and non-dominant sexualities, has been invoked persistently to produce or justify asymmetrical and hierarchical arrangements in society and culture as a whole, to restrict the access of women and people identifying with non-normative sexualities to material and cultural goods, and to devalue and marginalize their ways of life. Second, throughout history both equality and difference between women and men have typically resulted in disadvantage for women. Men and women have generally engaged in different socio-cultural, political and economic activities, and this gender-based division of labor, which has itself been subject to historical change, has tended to put women in an inferior position. Even when women and men appeared as equals in one sphere of life, this perceived equality often resulted in drawbacks or an increased burden for women in another area and women‘s contribution was still devalued as compared to men‘s.

CEU eTD Collection i Abstract The aim of this dissertation is to contribute to the understanding of the relationship between women's activism and the politics of gender by investigating Kemalist feminism in Turkey as a case study. The dissertation offers a political history of Kemalist feminism that enables an insight into the intertwined relationship between women's activism and the politics of gender. It focuses on the class, national/ethnic, and cultural/religious dynamics of and their implications for Kemalist feminist politics. In so doing, it situates Kemalist feminist activism within the politics of gender in Turkey; that is, it analyzes the relationship between Kemalist feminist activism and other actors in gender politics, such as the state, transnational governance, political parties, civil society organizations, and feminist, Islamist, and Kurdish women's activisms. The analysis of Kemalist feminist activism provided in this dissertation draws on a methodological-conceptual framework that can be summarized as follows. Activism provides the ground for women to become actors of the politics of gender.

Syllabus Course Description: This is an introductory course in the developing field of studies on communism, women and gender, in which we will explore historical, theoretical and global perspectives on the topic. We will discuss the complex question of what communism was (or is), emphasizing the need to distinguish between communism as an ideology, a political movement, or a regime, and, regardless, the need to carefully historicize and contextualize the phenomena in question. The dominant anti-communist discourse homogenizes “communism” and tends to conflate it with the dictatorships of (mostly) Stalin and (to a lesser extent) Mao. This view leaves out large parts of the history of communism worldwide. For much of the twentieth century, millions of women and men around the world were active in communist or communist-inspired or supported political movements for social justice and national independence, and many gave their lives in struggles to establish or defend socialist or communist states. As well, for millions of people around the world, the Soviet Union, the first socialist state, was a land of hope. The Soviet Union had achieved impressive economic growth by the 1950s, it promoted women’s emancipation, anti-racism and anti-colonialism, and supported progressive movements worldwide.

Supervisor: Associate Professor Éva Fodor CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2017 Abstract The current research aims to re-write, or at least reconsider, the history of feminism in the USSR during the late Brezhnev years. My starting point is the group which is often called ‘the first Soviet feminists,’ or considered to be the first reincarnation of feminist ideas in the Soviet Union since 1920s, namely, the dissident women’s group, which appeared in 1979 with samizdat publication of the almanac Woman and Russia and existed till 1982. My research question is: Was the Woman and Russia group the only feminists in the SU in 1970s, and what are implications of that label in light of the Cold War competition? The dissident women's group started its activity at the time of intense international debates on women’s rights after the International Women’s Year of the United Nations (1975) and during the ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (1979). Thus, it was a time when women's rights became an important battlefield of the Cold War confrontation. Therefore, regarding the group I will not only reconstruct the history of this group, and do a content analysis of their almanacs, but also situate their activity within the broader political context. My key argument is that the exclusive attachment of the label 'feminist' to the dissident women's group both in media and scholarship is determined by the Cold War paradigm and serves to erase the history of activism of communist women or those who acted within the state system.

    forum p Ten Years After Communism and Feminism Revisited Edited by Francisca de Haan p Introduction Francisca de Haan The first volume ofAspasia, which came out in 2007, included a Forum on the question of whether communism and feminism were a contradiction in terms.1 The wealth of research published in the past decade was one reason to go back to that initial question and organize this Forum. In the past few years, there has been an explosion of new publications analyzing the relationship between communism and feminism and the gender regimes socialist states supported and produced. In 2015 alone, two French historical journals published an issue with contributions about this: Clio: Femmes, Genre, Histoire (“Le ‘socialisme reél’ à l’ èpreuve de genre”)2 and Vingtième Siècle: Re- vue d’Histoire (“Femmes, genres et communismes”).3 The 2015 volume of the Jahrbuch für Historische Kommunismusforschung was also dedicated to “Frauen im Kommunis- mus.”4 And then a lot of work has been published in the region.5 This topic has also raised controversy, partly in relation to the work of Aspasia and some of its authors and editors. All this was reason to design a Forum in which seven scholars reflect on their research in this field and some of the issues recently raised: Chiara Bonfiglioli, Krassimira Daskalova, Alexandra Ghit, Kristen Ghodsee, Magdalena Grabowska, Jas- mina Lukić, and Raluca Maria Popa. As we know, “the truth about history” is by definition partial, created by human beings who are, as Susan Kingsley Kent recently put it, “always embedded in their sur- roundings, embedded by language, by history, by our social and economic relations.”6 The best we can do is to try to convince each other of our partial truths, based on a careful presentation of evidence and arguments.7 Our partial truths are also often con- tested.

She is the founding editor of ASPASIA. The International Yearbook of Central, Eastern and Southeastern European Women’s and Gender History (Berghahn Books, since 2007). Together with Krassimira Daskalova and Anna Loutfi, Francisca de Haan edited A Biographical Dictionary of Women’s Movements and Feminisms. Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe, 19th and 20th Centuries (2006), a work which has stimulated the research in women’s biographies and networks from the region and beyond. Prof. De Haan has published extensively on the history of nineteenth- and twentieth-century international women’s movements and feminisms. Her second book, co-authored with Annemieke van Drenth, focused on Elizabeth Fry (1780–1845) and Josephine Butler (1828– 1906) and their role in Britain and the Netherlands – with an emphasis on their impact in shaping the women’s movement and feminism in the Netherlands (Van Drenth and De Haan, 1999). Her interest then moved to the history of the main international women’s organisations. Initially, she focused on the International Woman Suffrage Alliance (which became the International Alliance of Women), then the International Council of Women, and subsequently also the Women’s International Democratic Federation (WIDF) – which she has termed the ‘Big Three’ international women’s organisations of the post-1945 world.

    Men & Masculinities under Socialism: A Social and Cultural History International Workshop, University of Bern, Switzerland, 14–15 May 2020. Coordinator: Dr. Peter Hallama, Institute of History, University of Bern, [email protected] For several decades now, scholars have taken an interest in analyzing the socialist attempt to transform traditional gender arrangements and revolutionize the family. In contrasting the ideal of women’s emancipation with everyday experience under socialism, studies have demonstrated the limits of the socialist “solution” to “the woman question.” However, recent debates about the very notion, meaning, and existence of feminism(s) under socialist rule show the ongoing relevance of the topic.1 Central and Eastern European gender history is a dynamic field and recent efforts include overcoming the continuing Cold War stereotypes and paradigms2 and writing a nonlinear history of socialist feminism.3 Another current challenge is to consider critical men’s studies and the history of masculinities, and to make these approaches fruitful for Eastern European gender studies and the gender history of socialism. The understanding of masculinities—like femininities— as a social and cultural construct that necessarily underlies historical change, and the performative and multifaceted view on male domination (over women and over other men), provide important avenues to write a truly relational, interactive, and dynamic gender history. Applying critical men’s studies and the history of masculinities to the history of state-socialist Eastern Europe opens new possibilities for further research. What impact did the making of “new” women—better educated, economically independent, and enjoying more legal rights— have on the constructions of masculinity and fatherhood in state-socialist societies?
