Box 8914 Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067, USA (DAH) *Correspondent: [email protected] Key words: California scorpionfish, days at liberty, Floy FD-94,Scorpaena guttata, tag return During the four-year period from 21 November 2002 to 24 July 2006, we performed a mark-recapture study on nearshore groundfish off southern and central California (Hanan and Curry 2012). For the study, volunteer fishermen aboard chartered commercial passen- ger fishing vessels (CPFV) caught by hook and line, 32 species of groundfish (32,366 total fish), including 2,751 California Scorpionfish, Scorpaena guttata; these fish were marked with Floy FD-94 tags and released. As of the date of the Hanan and Curry paper, 257 scor- pionfish were reported as recaptured with an average days at liberty (DAL) of 408.8 days (431.6 SD; range 2 - 2,126 days). A total of 76 (33%) of these recaptured scorpionfish were recaptured within 1 km of their original tagging site, 155 (67%) were within 5 km, and 17 (1%) were recaptured at distances of 50 km or more from the original tagging site with a range of 68 to 1,788 DAL. On 21 November 2017, a tagged California scorpionfish was reported caught by Mr. Robert Rosenberg, a recreational angler, on a one-day trip aboard the CPFV New Del Mar out of Marina Del Rey, California. -

AGENCY OVERVIEW The Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) conducts fisheries and marine mammal research at three laboratories in California. Activities are primarily in support of the Pacific Fishery Management Council, the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), as well as a number of international fisheries commissions and conventions. The Science and Research Director is Kristen Koch and the Acting Deputy Director is Dr. Toby Garfield. All SWFSC divisions have supported the essential needs of the NMFS and the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) for groundfish, including as active members of the PFMC’s Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC), the Groundfish Management Team, and other management teams and advisory bodies. The Center is headquartered in La Jolla, which hosts three divisions that conduct research on a wide range of Pacific and Antarctic fish, marine mammals, sea turtles, and marine habitats; the Antarctic Ecosystem Research Division (led by Dr. George Watters), the Marine Mammal and Turtle Division (led by Dr. Lisa Ballance), and the Fisheries Resources Division (led by Dr. Gerard DiNardo). The Fisheries Resources Division (FRD) conducts research on groundfish, large pelagic fishes (tunas, billfish and sharks), and small coastal pelagic fishes (anchovy, sardine and mackerel), and is the only source of groundfish research at the La Jolla facility. The Fisheries Research Division is also the primary source of federal support for the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) surveys that have taken place along much of the California coast since 1951. -

What is an MPA? MPAs are a type of marine managed area (MMA) where marine or estuarine waters are set aside primarily to protect or conserve marine life and associated habitats. California has a coastal network of 124 protected areas designed to help increase the coherence and effectiveness of protecting the state’s marine life, habitats, and ecosystems. The network includes three types of MPA: state marine reserve (SMR), state marine conservation area (SMCA), and state marine park (SMP); one MMA: state marine recreational management area (SMRMA); and special closures. There are 119 MPAs, 5 MMAs and 15 special closures, each with unique boundaries and regulations in the network. Non-consumptive activities, restoration, and permitted scientific research are allowed. What is an SMR? An SMR is a type of MPA that protects resources by prohibit ing the recreational and/or commercial take of all marine resources. CALIFORNIA MARINE FISH LANDINGS FOR 1972 LEO PINKAS Marine Resources Region 1.1. INTRODUCTION The protection, propagation, and wise utilization of California's living marine resources (established as common property by statute, Section 1600, Fish and Game Code) is dependent upon the welding of biological, environment- al, economic, and sociological factors. Fundamental to each of these factors, as well as the entire management pro- cess, are harvest records. The California Department of Fish and Game began gathering commercial fisheries land- ing data in 1916. Commercial fish catches were first published in 1929 for the years 1926 and 1927. This report, the 32nd in the landing series, is for the calendar year 1972. It summarizes commercial fishing activities in marine as well as fresh waters and includes the catches of the sportfishing partyboat fleet. Preliminary landing data are published annually in the circular series which also enumerates certain fishery products produced from the catch. -

Life History Squid, Octopuses, Clams, and Oysters belong in the taxonomic phylum Mollusca and are characterized as having soft bodies with a hard shell portion. California Market Squid are small pelagic mollusks that inhabit the waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean from the southern tip of Baja California to southeastern Alaska. The highest abundance of squid occurs between Punta Eugenia, Baja California and Monterey Bay, California. Squid can be found in open waters above the continental shelf (See Biology & Ecology – Ecosystems Where Fish Live) from the surface to depths of at least 700 m (2,300 ft). Market Squid have a life span of approximately one year and reach a maximum total length of 30 cm (12 in). They are a semelparous species that spawn multiple times during the last few weeks of their lives. When adults reach maturity they move into shallow waters, usually semi-protected bays, where they congregate in dense schools over sandy bottoms. Spawning seasons are dependent on environmental conditions, like water temperature and water clarity. In Monterey Bay, mass spawning during the night usually occurs in April through November, while in southern California it occurs in October through April or May. When spawning (video) occurs, a male grabs a female and holds her in a vertical position and then uses a specialized ventral arm to transfer and deposit spermatophores into the female’s mantle cavity. The females lay eggs in elongated capsules, which each may hold up to 300 eggs. -

LOVE,l BRITA AXELL,l PAMELA MORRIS,1 ROBSON COLLINS,s AND ANDREW BROOKS~- ABSTRACT We examined the life history of the California scorpionfish in the Southern California Bight. Based on sportfish creel census data, the species was most abundant in the southern part of the Bight. particular ly around Catalina, San Clemente, and the Coronado Islands. Trawl studies from 1974 to 1984 indicated that California scorpionfish populations varied considerably in abundance, with numbers peaking in 1982. Though the species usually associates with hard substrata, it was abundant over mud about the Palos Verdes Peninsula, site of a major sewage outfall. We think that this anomalous abundance was due to the presence of large numbers of a prey species, the ridgeback prawn, Sicyonia ingentis, which was attracted to the nutrient-rich substrata. Female California scorpionfish lived to 21 years. males to 15. Females grew faster than males. Von Bertalanffy age-length parameters for females were L - 44.3, k = 0.13, to = -1.9, and for males L = 36.3, k = 0.12, to = -3.86. Over 50% ofboth females and males were mature at 2 years of age. Males tended to mature at a slightly smaller size. Spawning occurred from May through August, peaking in July. California scorpionfish formed large offshore spawning aggregations in waters deeper than their off-season habitat. 'ragging results indicated that fish return to the same spawning area annually. Crabs, primarily juvenile Cancer antlwnyi, were the most important food item of fishes inhabiting soft substrata in shallow water. -

Market Squid (Loligo (Doryteuthis) opalescens) Certification Units Considered Under this Species: • California round haul fishery (purse and drum seine) • California brail fishery Summary In terms of volume and revenue, market squid (Loligo (Doryteuthis) opalescens) represents one of the most important commercial fisheries in California, generating millions of dollars of income annually from domestic and foreign sales. Market squid is managed by the state, consistent with federal fishery management guidelines. Because squid live less than a year and die after spawning, there is difficulty in assessing annual recruitment or estimating stock biomass. Bycatch rates are low, and the majority of incidental catch is other coastal pelagic species (CPS). Strengths: • Low incidental catch and bycatch • Managed under a state FMP and monitored under a federal FMP • New analytical approach to estimate abundance of the spawning population (Dorval et al. 2013) Weaknesses: • Catch limits are fixed • Biomass is largely influenced by environmental factors • Market squid are an important forage species - more information is needed to determine how current harvest levels impact the ecosystem 1 History of the Fishery in California Biology of the Species Squid belong to the class Cephalopoda of the phylum Mollusca (CDFG 2005). There are approximately 750 recognized species of squid alive today and more than 10,000 fossil forms of cephalopods. Squid have large, well-developed eyes and strong parrot-like beaks. They use their fins for swimming in much the same way fish do and their funnel for extremely rapid “jet” propulsion forward or backward. The squid’s capacity for sustained swimming allows it to migrate long distances as well as to move vertically through hundreds of meters of water during daily foraging (feeding) bouts.
