Halpern Bucknell University Convincing people that they experience auditory imagery for music is not diffi cult. When I tell people that I study auditory imagery, be they psychologists, musicians, neither, or both, they often ask me how they can stop tunes from running through their head. Unfortunately, I have no expert answer forthem. But anyone who has experienced such an annoyance will agree that auditory imagery, or "sounds in the head," is at least as vivid as the "pictures in the head" of visual imagery. This vividness is also illustrated by an item on an auditory imagery questionnaire that I employed in one of the studies described later on. It asked respondents to imagine the sound of fingernails scrapinga chalkboard and to rate the image forvividness.
