Abstract. Further results of our research into the Giant Butterfly-Moths (Castniidae) of the Museum of Nat- ural History (University of Wrocław) are presented. Castniids of the Niepelt collection had previously been reviewed. However, while curating other sections of the Lepidoptera collection, we discovered 18 misplaced specimens belonging to nine taxa of Castniidae, several of them bearing typical labels by Niepelt. Among them, two are of particular interest, insofar as they are associated with the world-class botanists August We- berbauer (1871–1948) and Karl Adolf Georg Lauterbach (1864–1937). Introduction Examination of rich collections of Castniidae and other insect groups in several Polish museums (González et al. 2013a, b; Domagała et al. 2015, 2017a, b; Domagała and Dobosz 2019) led the authors to continue the exploration of such ever-surprising depositories. The tribe Gazerini as previously delimited was found to be paraphyletic with respect to the genera Ceretes, Divana, Riechia, Frostetola, and Oiticicastnia. The genera Castnia, Geyeria, and Athis were also found to be non-monophyletic taxa. The mimicry pattern had multiple independent origins in the Neotropical castniids, and at least two lineages, Riechia and Prometheus, are involved in Batesian mimicry rings with unpalatable butterfly models in the tribes Acraeini and Heliconiini (Nymphalidae). We propose for Castniini 13 new synonymies and 27 new combinations. Geyeria strigata (Walker, 1854) is revalidated. RESUMEN. Se colectaron nueve ejemplares pertenecientes a dos especies de la familia Castniidae: Athis delecta (Shaus, 1911) (un ejemplar) fue registrada en vegetación de Matorral y Athis inca oriza- bensis (Strand, 1913) (ocho ejemplares) en Selva baja subcaducifolia con elementos de Encino y Bosque mesófilo. Athis delecta representa un nuevo registro para Tamaulipas, mientras que la segunda especie se reafirma para Tamaulipas, pero es nuevo registro para Querétaro. The taxonomic knowledge of this family is limited mainly because they are very rare in natural ecosystems, their endemism, small geographical distribution, scarcity of specimens in scientific collections (Miller 1972, González & Fernández-Yépez 1993, Lamas 1993), and also there are limited studies on the group. Castniid moths are medium to large in size, from 20 to 110 mm; they are related to Cossidae and Hesperiidae, the distal portion of the antenna is similar to that of the Hesperiidae with a club and apiculus and the presence of three cubital veins on the wings. Few species are dimorphic in coloration although both sexes are similar in appearance (Miller 2000). At present almost 90 species belonging to 33 genera are recognized, even though some authors mention up to 106 different species (Lamas 1995, Miller 2000, González et al. -

Concepción. Chile. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. A description of the larval stage of the bromeliad base borer, Castnia eudesmia is provided. This paper corrects the previous description for this species, which mistakenly was based on a saturniid larva. Key words. Adetomeris erythrops, Bromeliaceae, chaetotaxy, Chile, larval morphology, Neotropical, Puya chilensis, Saturniidae, South America, Ormiscodes marginata In our previous paper related to this species (Angulo & Olivares, 1993), we erroneously described the immature stages of Ormiscodes marginata Phil. (Saturniidae) under the name Castnia psittacus (Molina, 1788). The latter moth species proved to be Castnia eudesmia Gray, 1838 (Miller, 1995). To correct our previous mistake, we now are describing the real larvae of Castnia eudesmia Gray. The larvae of Castnia eudesmia bores into the creeping stems of its hostplant Puya chilensis (Bromeliaceae). Pupae appear in January with half of the pupae sticking out of the stem (Fig.2); adult emerges out of this exposed pupal case. C. eudesmia larvae of all instars can be found simultaneously. The hostlplant is heavily utilized by various Lepidoptera larvae. In addition to C. eudesmia, the floral stems are bored by larvae of Schistotheca canescens Ragonot (Pyralidae) (Angulo & Olivares, 2003); at the base and externally larvae of Ormiscodes marginata Phil. -
