OUTSTANDING YEAR for Local Robotics Team! The Robotics Team from St. Nicholas Catholic School in Freedom, Wisconsin finished off the 2018-19 season with outstanding performances at the State, U.S. and World level. The team, named “Rocket Robots”, is co-coached by Ed Krecjie and , an engineer at McMAHON. Ron has helped coach the team for the past five years, and his son Eric is one of the team’s members. Along with Eric Wolf, the other team members included St. Nicholas middle schoolers Vincent Cook, Joey Krejcie, Sarah Krejcie, Ethan Roskowski, and Cole VanCamp. The Team’s first shot at a championship came in March with a trip to the VEX State Competition in Milwaukee, to compete for the Wisconsin state title. The team came out on top, bringing home the Wisconsin State Championship banner. Winning this event qualified the team to compete at VEX Worlds. Before the Worlds competition, however, the Rocket Robots traveled to Iowa to compete at the Create U.S. Open Robotics Middle School Competition. This invitational competition included 115 of the best robots in the U.S. and 26 from China. In this competition, the middle school teams were split into two divisions – Blue and Red. The St. Nicholas team took first place in the Blue Division, then went up against the Red Division winner (a team from China) in the ‘Finals Match’, losing two close matches resulting in a second-place finish overall. The season wrapped up with a trip to Kentucky in April to compete in the VEX Worlds Robotics Competition. At this event the best robots in the world competed for the title of World Champion. Forty nations had teams in attendance (there are a total of 24,000 VEX teams in 60 nations). The 188 middle school teams competing were divided into two divisions (Opportunity and Spirit). The St. Nicholas team took first place in the Opportunity Division, becoming the first Wisconsin team to ever make it to the finals to determine who the World Champions would be! The Rocket Robots fell just short of victory in the final match but were extremely proud to claim second place in the world standings! McMAHON proudly supports the St. Nicholas robotics team, and recognizes how important these types of programs are, grooming a new generation of innovators, thinkers, and problem-solving leaders. We wish them well in their 2019-20 season!
