By maintaining control of the Senate, Republicans start 2017 with a jam-packed agenda. First up will be Senate confirmation of presidential appointments, and with only 50 votes needed the Senate is poised to process as many nominations as quickly as possible. This will ensure the new administration has as many Senate-confirmed cabinet secretaries as possible soon after President Trump is sworn in on January 20. To accomplish this, the Senate will be in session all of January except for Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, a federal holiday.
