Dundee Directory DUNDEE PUBLIC LIBRARIES LOCAL COLLECTION No. This Collection is based upon the " Old Dundeel " Collection by Mr A. C. Lamb, F. S.A.Scot., (died 1897), presented by Edward Cox, Esq., M.A., of: Cardean, in 1901. LOCAL fflSTORY Coo S7':i ^"^^K coo 572 882X Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2010 with funding from National Library of Scotland http://www.archive.org/details/dundeedirectory184243prin S,,,^^/^^;^^ oZ€^ ^N --.-^fvX ' VNl>,.>^yv'^ r-. ; ; THE DUNDEE DIRECTORY, MDCCCXLII-XLIII CONTAINING THE NAMES, PLACES OF BUSINESS, & RESIDENCES OF THE PRINCIPAL INHABITANTS; LISTS OF PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS, BANKING & SHIPPING COMPANIES, COACHES & CARRIERS ; ALSO, LIST OF VESSELS REGISTERED IN DUNDEE WITH SEVERAL USEFUL TABLES, AMONG WHICH IS A TABLE OF THE NEW DUTIES ON VARIOUS ARTICLES OF IMPORT. DUNDEE: JAMES CHALMERS, 10 CASTLE STREET. 1842. DDEEH. Two years have not elapsed since the last Dundee Directory was published ; but it being generally ac- knowledged, that at no recent period of twenty-four months, previous to the date of that publication, have so many unforeseen changes and casualties taken place in Dundee than during the last, —thereby rendering the former Directory almost useless. The Publisher therefore begs leave to produce another for 1842-43, on which he with confidence asserts, that neither pains nor expense have been spared to render it as accurate and complete, as that can pos- sibly be accomplished. The Directory and Lists, after these were in types, have been carefully examined by those competent to judge of their accuracy, and such alterations made thereon, as was by them satisfac- torily pointed out,— stiD, to say that it is free of errors or omissions, would be presumption. The present Directory contains about three hun- dred Names more, and an equal number of Lists with its predecessor ; also a selection, from the New Tariff, of Articles Imported into Dundee ; besides prints of the Exchange Buildings, and of the Churches, as they appeared before the fire in January 1841,—which were not promised in the Prospectus,—and these without any addition to the price. The Publisher has to acknowledge an extensive List of Subscribers for this small Work,—indeed, the num- ber far exceeds expectations when the first sheet was put to press ; and, as the impression is but limited, he will escape the error fallen into with former similar publications—by having many ofthem useless on hand, while with the present, he will have only a few copies for general sale after Subscribers are supphed. 10 Castle Street, Ausust 1842. During Scottish football’s formative years, however, the ascendancy of the Old Firm was far from set in stone. The exhaustive study of these two extraordinary organisations, therefore, greatly distorts our understanding of Scottish football’s Victorian origins. Both clubs were part of a far greater scene which included not only fellow ‘senior’, well-established clubs, but also any number of ‘junior’, ‘juvenile’ and non-classified football clubs, as well as fledgling associations which oversaw the regulation of the young game.
