The man from Kentucky, self-taught and a true heavyweight on the deli- cate piano stool, dedicated his whole life on the road to performing funk. He was highly successful – whether playing with his trio or with Eddie Harris, as a pianist or as a singer, catalogue # 86016 in a club or on a big stage – and he always succeeded in captivating his audience. On But Not Really, the first of seven LPs on the Limelight label, he plays in a trio with Vic- set contents 1 LP / gatefold sleeve / booklet tor Gaskin on the bass and Paul Humphrey on drums. They are the first phonograph records to reproduce the full dynamic range of the studio master tapes from which they were made. The music experience provided by dbx Discs is Stunning. Now you can enjoy realistic music dynamics in your home — with all the fine detail and subtle nuances that create the emotional impact and excitement of a live performance. Originally developed for professional recording studios, dbx encode/decode technology has been employed to eliminate record surface noise for all practical purposes. With a sound quality that is virtually indistinguishable from the master tape, the dbx Encoded Disc is the only record format that can reproduce the full dynamics of digital recordings — an amazing 90 dB dynamic range, compared to the restricted dynamic range of about 60 dB for even the finest conventional "audiophile" records. dbx Discs are produced using the finest master tapes available. Whether your interests are in classical, popular/folk or jazz music, you can now enjoy music performed in your home by your favorite artist — heard against a background of virtual silence. At last, you can listen to the music itself, not to the record! dbx Discs can be played on your present stereo system with the addition of a dbx Model 21 Disc Decoder or one of the dbx 120 or 220 series tape noise reduction systems.

  • Todd Johnson's Full Biography
Todd Johnson’s Biography Todd Johnson is recognized as a pioneer of the six-string electric bass. With his Zon signature model six-string bass, Todd has developed an innovative technique where he plays chord changes and bass lines simultaneously, plus his ability to play "chord melody" gives him an uniquely rich and fuller sound that proves extremely useful in both solo and small combo work. In his CD review, Cliff Engle of www.bassically.net notes that "Johnson's sophisticated chord melodies are unrivaled amongst his contemporaries. (He) has demonstrated that his innovative bass playing style is anything but traditional. (His) guitar-like chordal accompaniment style is reminiscent to that of the legendary jazz guitarists including Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, and Ron Eschete. Johnson's guitar-like performance is so convincing that as a listener, if you were not made aware that Johnson was not a jazz guitarist, you would never to able to decipher the difference." Todd has been an integral member of the critically acclaimed jazz trio of guitarist Ron Eschete since 1991. Then in 2004, Johnson also joined forces with acclaimed bassist and singer Kristin Korb to form The Kristin Korb/Todd Johnson Trio. Johnson has also performed and/or recorded with other such artists as, Mike Stern, Poncho Sanchez, Frank Potenza, Dave Weckl, Scott Henderson, Plas Johnson, Lew Tabackin, Jack Sheldon, Rufus Reid, Mundell Lowe, Michael Manring, Paul Humphrey, and Frank Gambale. Though Johnson dedicates himself largely to performing and recording, he also teaches courses and workshops in a variety of settings. Since 1991 Johnson has served as a faculty member at such notable schools as Musicians Institute (BIT) 1991-1999, California Institute of the Arts 1998-2004, College of the Canyons 1999-2004 and The Master's College 2002 - present.
